all brilliant haunting songs and jangly sound of ricbenbacter guitar similar to the byrds, tom petty etc this, driver 8 , green grow the rushes , can't get there from here, favourites.
they were an indie band doing it their way not a groomed set of recording companies performing monkeys . kurt cobain paid tribute to them for this.
Michael Stipe,Mike Mills,Bill Berry and Peter Buck. These guys used to be a great band, until the mid 1990's.Once the 211st century hit, they seemed to run out of gas. They don't put out the hits like they used to.Then again, what bands do?
They really should've released this as their first live album/DVD instead of the mediocre "R.E.M. Live" album that was released in 2007 that featured a show from their not-so-great 2004-2005 tour. This would've been much stronger and pleased fans more. Best show I think I've ever seen.
This is the best Stipe performance I think I've ever seen! He felt that one. You can see it in his gestures. That's when he really shines. That's why I've been there listening since '82. Thanks for this, I am gonna enjoy it again.
Should be rereleased with their 35 min accelerate album, 'cause it would rock the present audience just as it did to us in SC and Georgia when it came out
It's a pity this is so down on the record because it could have been great. Such a lovely tune, so very mature for such a young band. Ditto Perfect Circle.
this is one of my favorite songs! I've heard it live on the live r.e.m. concert perfect sqare but i think it sounds better this live version. Great concert thanks for posting it!
Thanks again, REMChout. A year after Fables came out some of the band members (Berry, in particular) were quoted in the rock rags as saying this record "sucked." I always thought it was their finest acheivement, their creative peak. Some band members have come around since and admitted that the album is dark, moody and compellingly Southern gothic, Faulknerian, etc.--which of course it is. Thanks again REMChout.
great post. one of my favorite REM tracks.

Awesome version of this song, better than the FABLES version. BTW, forgot how cute Michael Stipe was back in the day.

They kept their emotional integrity all the way into the late 90s. How many other bands made it 20 years without falling apart or giving in?
We all die someday. They kept it burning longer than most.

Are you saying they don't have integrity anymore?

As a teenager in 1985, REM stuck the musical nail on the head. Take a break Driver 8.

what an intense ending, the guitar tone is terrific, so is Mill's backing vocals. What an intense ending though.

This was when I really enjoyed this band. Great tune from a great album. Murmur, Fables, Pageant and Reckoning were my favorite albums.

I really like Fables...I'd say that some songs' production sounds flat, but still definitely a quality album.

@REMchout i would agree, production is flat, songs are masterpieces
