Indonesia is not a signatory to the 1951 Convention so therefore those seeking asylum cannot actually ask for protection from the government/groups they are fleeing.
To be granted refugee status you have to satisfy some pretty rigid guidelines and have your story backed up by more than your own statement. It is not easy.

With regard to the comment I made about Asylum Seekers receiving housing, I have been told by Housing that these people do receiving priority, because they base it on needs. I have been researching these things for nearly two years, and I don't write things unless I am sure about them. If things are so bad, why do they come here and then go back for a holiday? Why aren't these young men staying behind and fighting for their countries, while our Aussie men die? Please explain. They are healthy.

You should also be aware that asylum seekers come from countries other than those that Australian soliders are fighting in (Iraq and Afghanistan).
@barbbydoll You should also take into account that the majority of asylum seekers - Tamils from Sri Lanka and Hazara from Afghanistan - are fleeing persecution and in some cases ethnic cleansing which is largely unchecked by the government. The Taliban open state they are targeting and slaughtering the Hazara.
These are civillians - families, women, children - who are being murdered. They are not soliders, and this it not some black-and-white nationalistic war of 'goods guys' versus 'bad guys'.

Australia is a big, wealthy nation and we can well afford to help those fleeing circumstances that none of us ever have to deal with.
@AusGael, half the problems refugees are fleeing from are wars caused by WHITE action either recently (AFghanistan, Iraq) or in the colonial past (Sri Lanka, Africa). And there are plenty of white 'economic refugees' living in Asian and African and Middle Eastern countries - they're following the tax-free and otherwise inflated incomes, which, in effect, is what many India and Chinese students are doing coming here in the hope of better-paid jobs. Only we denounce them as 'only after our jobs'.

Indonesia is not a signatory to the 1951 Convention so therefore those seeking asylum cannot actually ask for protection from the government/groups they are fleeing.
To be granted refugee status you have to satisfy some pretty rigid guidelines and have your story backed up by more than your own statement. It is not easy.

tough luck, we have 5.3% unemployment here, with many more on only part time or casual work, over 100,000 australians are homeless, I myself have been out of work for 6 months. We don't want refugees, there's enough australians who are on tough times. Countries have to look after their own people instead of offloading them to other countries. @AIAustralia Wow, something that was signed before my father was born says we have to do what the UN tells us regarding illegals. Yes they are illegal, the refugee convention names them as illegals.
Plus the UN now tells us to send the detainees back because most aren't asylum seekers.
But this doesn't matter to you because they are brown. All non white people are inherently good and would never lie about their age/status/persecution. Watch the crime rate soar aussies. You asked for it.

@empadu they are not in detention for 6 years. Many are new arrivals who are angry that they haven't gotten their new house/car/cash on the first day. And no, I wouldn't sow up my lips in any circumstance, I am not a savage animal and other countries don't owe me anything. Please explain to me why a minority (Sudanese refugees) have put fear into majority in my local area by slashing innocent people with machetes? How could that happen when they are just peaceful citizens seeking refuge?

And what myths are they actually addressing? Are we meant to believe that all refugees are little kids? I guess young men wouldn't be such sympathetic image. What about images of them starting fires at detention centers. Poor things....

1. It is illegal to seek asylum by boat (it is legal by domestic and international law - domestically the Australia Migration Act).
2. "Boat people" are not legitimate refugees (over 90% who arrived by boat were granted refugee status in 2009).
3. That 'boat people' are coming in huge numbers (they make up less than 2% of our annual migration intake).

This ad lies through it's teeth. It is illegal to come here by boat, secondly 75% of Sri Lankans who find asylum here return to Sri Lanka on holiday within 3 years, they must be really terrified of being persecuted!
Not to mention all these "Asylum Seekers" are men, do they not have families? Women in these countries are treated horrendously, why are they leaving them behind? None of it makes sense, Amnesty, what a pack of liars you are.

I would like to see some data on the sexes of asylum seekers.
If you have any doubt about the legitimacy of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, I would invite you to visit the east, and worse yet, the north of the country. This is a country that just experienced 30 years of civil war and the bitter conflict still remains beneath the surface. Please do some research as to their situation.

See one of many articles in The Herald Sun by Andrew Bolt about immigration and refugees. These people are here to rape us. Oh and the Tamil tigers actually started the war they are now fleeing from, atleast they killed muslims.

Asylum implies that a person is in grave danger of losing their life for some political agenda. So all thes millions of unjustified immigrants are seeking asylum. Come on. We are not that stupid. In 2009 around 90% of those who arrived by boat seeking asylum were accepted as genuine refugees -- so theres your statistic on that one. Not sure where these imagined million-strong hordes of illegal immigrants come in...

Stay and die.......get on a pathetic excuse for a boat with a high risk you'll die.....neither works. Australia is so far away from anything. So why come here? Why not elsewhere? We're so far away! Its not a justifiable risk! And this ad really is terrible. The actors in this are so stereotypical and for me just look like actors doing their job.

With regard to the comment I made about Asylum Seekers receiving housing, I have been told by Housing that these people do receiving priority, because they base it on needs. I have been researching these things for nearly two years, and I don't write things unless I am sure about them. If things are so bad, why do they come here and then go back for a holiday? Why aren't these young men staying behind and fighting for their countries, while our Aussie men die? Please explain. They are healthy.

@barbbydoll I am not sure how you can somehow claim that all refugees in Australia go home for a holiday. That seems like a generalisation based on absolute heresay rather than any kind of fact. Could you provide a reference for your point on housing?
You should also be aware that asylum seekers come from countries other than those that Australian soliders are fighting in (Iraq and Afghanistan).

@barbbydoll You should also take into account that the majority of asylum seekers - Tamils from Sri Lanka and Hazara from Afghanistan - are fleeing persecution and in some cases ethnic cleansing which is largely unchecked by the government. The Taliban open state they are targeting and slaughtering the Hazara.
These are civillians - families, women, children - who are being murdered. They are not soliders, and this it not some black-and-white nationalistic war of 'goods guys' versus 'bad guys'.

Every time someone posts something insulting, racist, threatening etc. it just pushes mainstream opinion away from the "stop the boats" hysteria because most people don't want to be associated with such statements.
Australia is a big, wealthy nation and we can well afford to help those fleeing circumstances that none of us ever have to deal with.

@AusGael, half the problems refugees are fleeing from are wars caused by WHITE action either recently (AFghanistan, Iraq) or in the colonial past (Sri Lanka, Africa). And there are plenty of white 'economic refugees' living in Asian and African and Middle Eastern countries - they're following the tax-free and otherwise inflated incomes, which, in effect, is what many India and Chinese students are doing coming here in the hope of better-paid jobs. Only we denounce them as 'only after our jobs'.

Fantastic! Congratulations Amnesty. I taught kids form the Port Hedland Detention Centre a few years back, it was such an eye opener for me; hearing life stories from these kids and their families. Trying to teach the kids about topics such as 'democracy'!
