hey. maybe I've exaggerated with calling Normann the best ironman triathlete, BUT still, he's among those who won this great race ( I mean Hawaii) so without any other complaints, you have to admitt that we can qualify him to the group of the best triathletes (including Mark Allen, Dave Scott, Chrisse, Macca any many many others!)
You'd better watch Macca this season guys!!! I've seen him on the half-ironman in Austria (he won, 3:55, as far as I remember), this guy is outstanding! Thank's for all your posts guys :) Let the force be with you during this season ;)
I don't think a guy who has dropped out of 2 of the past 4 Ironman World Championships can be considered the greatest of all time. Yeah, he won the other 2 that he didn't drop out of, but the year he dropped out due to flat tires was bogus. He fell out of contention to win, and completely collapsed mentally. The *greatest* of all-time wouldn't have dropped out - the greatest would have kept fighting. Normann's an amazing Ironman triathlete, but not the best - he's not mentally strong enough.
gonna have to disagree with you there. mark allen suffered two falt tires in 87 or 88(not sure which one) and he dropped out of the race. And he is the greatest of all time(maybe dave scott). Give stadler some credit, you cant go 112 miles on a bike with two flat tires
thats a 100% winning record for the 4 races and It has taken Macca 7 attempts to win one. Nowadays to win an ironman title is much harder than the Mark Allen & Dave Scott era, now there are at least 10 guys at the starting line who can win. And as far as the Hawaii conditions went last year was a "mild" year with no wind and i can guarantee that if the famous "mumuku" winds blow this year Stadler will build a massive lead and the rest will race for second.
I agree. Competition is much higher now than it was. As for Stadler not finishng races, everyone has their share of DNFs, including Macca several times and the other greats.
Macca is a one-time winner, we'll see this year how he can handle with defending his title ! Maybe it'll be a challange between those two that we are talkin about. Who knows..? But you know what? What really counts in the ironman race? heh, bike right? So there is no way that McCormack will go under 8h. :)
If the bike was the crux, then Zack would have won numerous times; the same with Hellriegel (1x). The bike is very important, but less so in a tactical Pro race - look at Sindballe & Lieto in Hawaii last year. I think it will be a long time before any one goes sub 8 in Kona, if at all. In fact has anyone gone sub 8 outside Roth? Not sure they have.
Well, people ave now gone sub-8 in Frankfurt! Roth has very smooth roads and short transitions. Plus like IMDE it's not that hilly. The run is flat too.
Modest?! he is not modest at all...

Best Ironman ever? I don't think the history books will (ever?) support that. Perhaps another 4 or 5 Hawaii victories.....
Perhaps he should go to Roth and then we'll see how fast he can really go (surely under 8?) or maybe he's just scared of Macca (LOL).

Why is it actually that Roth is so fast?! Is it the special envirnoment?
