the vast majority of college professors in the US identify themselves as liberal. i agree that it would be cumbersome sometimes to force teachers to give all sides of an issue. but i think it would be beneficial to have more faculty members in humanities departments that are conservative. it's a shame that conservative speakers often need bodyguards on campus.

Actually that's a good point but my problem is the idea that "liberal" is far left, which is true in the US but in any rational political system liberal is centrist so it's a neutral impact on discourse. That aside, college students are adults it's thier responbility to learn.

You can't teach people to think, and it's not the job of a teacher to try. A teacher's job is to inform. If there is an issue that is a matter of opinion only, NEITHER side should be taught. Schools are supposed to teach you facts. Talk shows are for opinions.
More importantly, both sides of an issue are not magically and perfectly equal in all cases, or even in most. That's like saying that we should teach the flat world theory, because some people disagree with the oblate spheroid idea.
If that's what education is about I'd have a very low opinion of it. You're using a "blank slate" theory of education, which is not conducive to creating free citizens, but rather is conducive to creating totalitarians. I agree that a teacher cannot merely transmit how to think, but they can pose problems for students that reveal the world more clearly than it would appear if they were left to their own devices. This can help students learn for themselves how to think.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard, the majority of the students who graduate elite Ivy Leagues (Harvard, Yale, U Penn etc.) end up working in "finance" which basically just means wall street so the idea of "left wing indoctrination" flies out the window.
Secondly, forcing professors to "give both sides" is cumbersome to class and is within an ambiguous spectrum, is it both sides to whether Obama is a war criminal or not or a war hero or not?

the vast majority of college professors in the US identify themselves as liberal. i agree that it would be cumbersome sometimes to force teachers to give all sides of an issue. but i think it would be beneficial to have more faculty members in humanities departments that are conservative. it's a shame that conservative speakers often need bodyguards on campus.

You can't teach people to think, and it's not the job of a teacher to try. A teacher's job is to inform. If there is an issue that is a matter of opinion only, NEITHER side should be taught. Schools are supposed to teach you facts. Talk shows are for opinions.
More importantly, both sides of an issue are not magically and perfectly equal in all cases, or even in most. That's like saying that we should teach the flat world theory, because some people disagree with the oblate spheroid idea.

You're using a "blank slate" theory of education, which is not conducive to creating free citizens, but rather is conducive to creating totalitarians. I agree that a teacher cannot merely transmit how to think, but they can pose problems for students that reveal the world more clearly than it would appear if they were left to their own devices. This can help students learn for themselves how to think.
