Bakshi thought that Saruman sounded too similar to Sauron, and wished to differentiate the two by coming up with "Aruman".

Eventually however, this decision was reversed mid-production and Saruman retained his own name. But because of his low budget, Bakshi was not able to re-record all dialogue with "Aruman" in it. Thus, the whole (S)Aruman mess started.
