  • thanks to johnmurray's (son's partner's) translation, English caption is added. inform me if you find any errata.

  • To turn on closed caption, move the cursor on the triangle simbol on the right bottom of the video, then on CC to choose "English".

  • This is brilliant!

Here is an English translation of the text kindly provided by my son's partner.

  • うわっ、なんか一気に来たw @johnmurray1960 thx for your comments and translation. looks like this clip has been put on some BBS abroad,,, view counts has increased drastically in the last week. lol

  • Matsuyama city station: the main terminal of Iyo railway.

Because it's a different station to the JR Matsuyama station, they have to be careful of the starting direction (I think)

    *

Botchan train: From the Meiji period (1868-1912) to the wartime period, Matsuyama city employed steam locomotives as well as ordinary trains.

  • The name is derived from Natsume Souseki's novel, "Botchan", which describes "steam trains like matchboxes".

    *

However, in the novel they are described in a critical manner, so it's hard to understand why the people of Matsuyama are so attached to it...

    *

From 2001, restored rolling stock was put into service (2 steam trains, 3 ordinary trains), and now when asked about the Botchan railway, many people point to these.

  • Out of consideration for the environment, the locomotives are using diesel. (They simulate smoke using water vapour).

    *

Locomotive: Built in 1888, locomotive number 1

    Carriage: Built in 1888, 8-1, 8-2

    *

Dougo hot spring - Matsuyama city station (round trip - 14 times per day)

Dougo hot spring - JR Matsuyama station - Komachi station (round trip - 3 times per day)

  • @johnmurray1960 -- Hopefully, they will take the next step in environmentalism and return to steam using recycled vegetable oil for fuel, like the Grand Canyon Ry.

  • To prepare for photograph day, the rolling stock are inspected and service is halted in front of JR Matsuyama station. * At the terminal station, often uncoupling and the changing of course is done manually. * After alighting, it is detached from the locomotive and does a runaround. * With superhuman strength, they move the locomotive. * Moving the train. * Joining it back up to the locomotive. * Kon! (sound effect)
  • Screwing in the coupler. * *stretch* * Moving to the siding. * Of course, children and tourists make up the majority of its passengers. * A normal return ticket is 300 yen. * Katsuyama-machi crossing. * What is attached to the roof of this train is not a bow collector (pantograph), but equipment to operate the points and control the course.
