I cant believe how similar today's game was to this. Alex to VD , Young to Owens. Owens runs to his coach in tears of emotion and joy, VD doing the same thing with Harbaugh!! Thats crazy something special.
I had to come and see this touchdown today. The minute I saw the Vernon Davis TD in the last seconds of the playoff game today for the Niners / Saints, I thought of this touchdown. Congratulations, Niners !!!! Playing for the NFC Championship next week, and if ever a team had heart since this '98 team under Mooch, it is Jim Harbaugh's team this year. WOW!!!!!
yeaaaa i said the same thing!! soon as davis caught it then took his helmet off cried and hug his coach!! watch that game when i was a kid now im a man and i cant wait to share this with my kids
People rip Joe Buck for his calls because he doesn't get emotional, he keeps his head. Pat Summerall is showing how national broadcasters should call moments like this - Joe Buck is merely doing it right.
To Packer fans tore up about Rice's non-call everywhere: I'll just point out the Pack's fake win on MNF when Don Beebe was handed a TD after his knee was down around midfield and he was touched by a 49er player. Aren't paybacks a bitch?
@gallowspole Yeah and lets count how many botched calls and cheap shots the packers got away with against the Niners before that in those previous years. Remember the monday night game where the Packer receiver was touched by TWO Niner defenders after going down during a reception yet a whistle never blew and he was allowed to run and score? i got more if ya want. The niners were owed one, shut up and eat it.
It didn't seem to be such a Big Thing then, but we, as Packer fans, didn't know that the Pack, after a watershed year with Rhodes, were going to have our team turned over to Mike Sherman, and his soft-soap approach to corralling Favre, and waste the early 2000's on embarrassing exits from the playoffs. It wouldn't be for another decade, and a bitter divorce with Favre, for the Pack to get back on track. We just didn't realize just how bad Favre was going to be in big games.
@toolkien dear tool shed: favre is one of the 10 greatest qb' s in nfl history. and for packer fans, more importantly than that, he brot them back to their glory days. or would u rather have prolonged the days of jerry tagge, scott hunter and john hadl and co?? u talk about paying the price, favre has paid it. gbp fans shd kiss his ass and say it smells like roses.
@toolkien dear tool shed:ill send it again----favre is 1 of the 10 greatest qbs in nfl history. he brot them back the glory days almost single handedly. packer fans shd line up and kiss his rear end and say it smells like roses.
@obiwanobiwan13 You couldn't be more dead on.....Madden & Summerall were awesom....Pat knew how to let the video do the talking....he never spoke over the action. Young-Favre-Aikman....great times indeed
it's hard to argue that steve young had a better career than joe montana, but i think he was the best quarterback of all time by far, including peyton manning and tom brady.
@petemanguy i don't, the best stuff is so subjective, but young lost to too many good quarterbacks to really give him that mantle. this defeat of the packers was on their decline, he didn't beat them when they were super bowl contenders and it took a third time against a beat up cowboy team to finally defeat Dallas in the playoffs.
Young is definitely a better leader and smarter quarterback than Favre and a better scrambler than Aikman, but Aikman was a smarter more accurate quarterback.
@ilovefrankandbeans Hey, that wasn't very nice of you to say. Terrell Owens simply teared up because he knew that he made the big play to FINALLY beat Green Bay in the playoffs after years of being eliminated by the Pack. I bet you never even played football. I never played football, but I know that the big plays will, from time to time, have a lot of emotion attached to them. Owens decided to show his. Nothing wrong with that. Just because he wept, it doesn't make him unmanly.
@jpoulivaati i hope you're just joking. Jerry's at the top celebrating when he catches the ball. He was one of the first to fall on top of him and congratulate him. You must be a Jerry hater
This is my favorite play in NFL history! That is why I love T.O. screw all the drama surrounding him this catch is what he is all about he always gives everything he has each and every week!!
@fretter31 On the play right before this, Jerry Rice fumbled and the Packers recovered but Rice called down by contact. This was the year before instant replay came in the league so it couldn't be challenged. So the 49ers kinda lucked out.
What a relief to get the Packer monkey of our back but this play was only meaningful for that reason. Losing to Atlanta makes this play alot less meaningful. We had a stacked team and blew it in Atlanta. I think this victory took all the energy the 49ers had to give and they couldnt recoup it before Atlanta.
I have to respectfully disagree with your statement. The biggest reason they didn't beat Atlanta that next week was because 49er Star running back (Garrison Hearst) Broke his foot early in the game and was out. With no running game, it was uphill after that.
Young was a man - nearly falls dropping back, rifles the ball standing on the 33 yard line with what looked like little effort, and hits the bullseye. TO had a death grip on that one. He wasn't dropping it for nuthin that time. I went nuts when I saw this live. Young vindicates all those Packers losses on one play.
who cares if rice fumbled... green bay had gotten so many calls over the previous 4 years... karma is a b&tch green bay... don beebee mysterious non touch call on mnf in 96.... more and more...

If you think about it, this was really the end of an era for both teams. Young was finished next year, Hearst was never the same after his injury, Holmgren left for Seattle, and even the offensive playcaller for the Packers (a guy named Andy Reid) was gone. Yeah, both kept making the playoffs in future years, but it was never the same for either franchise.
Rice fumbled , wasn't even close. Probably the biigest reason Instant replay was instituted the following season. Also Darren Sharper can suck my dick, look at his pathetic attempt on this play.
I remember when I was watching this game live during Green Bay's kickoff after the TD. When Preston cut up field at 3:07, I was thinking, "ohhhhhh noooooo" because he looked like he was about to take it all the way. Thankfully, Preston was tackled to end the game.
Joe Buck and Troy Aikman should study more of Pat Summerall and John Madden commentaries. Maybe Fox can be more interesting and fun to watch like in years past.
Yes they are legends but just listen to them when he catches it for a TD. So nonchalant. You would just think at a game with this magnitude as time expiring T.O. takes a shot by both defenders, still holds on to the ball and wins it.
I was at this game in the first row of the upper deck at the Packers 10-yard line. I remember a couple of girls who I was sitting next to hugging me. Tears were in our whole row's and the rows behind us eyes. A very emotional day indeed. We could've taken the Falcons if Hearst had been healthy. The Broncos went on to destroy the Falcons in the Super Bowl a few weeks later...
yea that falcons game sucked....I think it was like the first play of the game he fucked up his ankle....we would have went to the superbowl....our team was STACKED
T.O. had his best time while playing for the niners, too bad he left, the real problem with the 49ers nowadays is management, when Eddie Debartolo was in charge we were among the best teams in football. I really wish the Yorks would sell the team.
Yeah the so called "Catch 2" didnt mean anything as the Niners lost the following week to the Falcons.

that was the same face Farve made when he lost to th Saints hahaha

It's the same crybaby face he always makes when he doesn't get his way. He "Just Loves The Game" except when he's losing.
I love seeing it -- and his true colors -- every time, and between this and the star stunt I willl NEVER be able to fully hate on T.O.

I remember when I was watching this game live during Green Bay's kickoff after the TD. When Preston cut up field at 3:07, I was thinking, "ohhhhhh noooooo" because he looked like he was about to take it all the way. Thankfully, Preston was tackled to end the game.

Farve's reaction at 0:19....priceless!

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman should study more of Pat Summerall and John Madden commentaries. Maybe Fox can be more interesting and fun to watch like in years past.

Madden said it right. That was amazing!

Lemme tell you, when niner fans watched this, they screamed so loud that you couldn't hear the announcers anyways.

The announcers let the crowd do the talking.

Madden at his best

This is when the 2 best announcers calling the game on FOX were around:
Pat Summerall & John Madden

sports announcer sucked balls on that moment

@loganfonseca You take that back talking about Legends like Pat Somerall and John Madden
jfliguy 2 years ago
Yes they are legends but just listen to them when he catches it for a TD. So nonchalant. You would just think at a game with this magnitude as time expiring T.O. takes a shot by both defenders, still holds on to the ball and wins it.

On this play pat summerall makes joe buck look good lol
