Well, it only improves how big the icons are, in WIndows 7 you have the option to change it back to it's original size. so why not use it. And you have pretty much the same functions in the small icons as you do in the big.
I realise that some people may not like it but it seems to me that Microsoft have probably spent a lot of time in improving the interface to make it more user friendly and it seems that the only reason to want to revert back is nostalgia it just seems weird to me.
I like the big icons but after a while of using them, i thought why not switch back to the small icons for a bit. So I did, and then changed it back to the big icons, however they now seemed quite large, and I got hooked on having the small icons. and by using the small icons you
1. More space for more icons
2. Vertical screen space
So this is ideal for power users if they have lots and lots of applications running.
Surely an optimised GUI would be better for the power user. Although you get more screen space you get faster navigation simply because it is easier to look at which plays a big part in how usable an interface is, more on a subconscious level but it still makes a big difference which is why Microsoft and other major companies spend loads of money in researching where on the screen people look and things like that so they can build a better interface for the end user. Hence the large icons.
tbh not really worth it you gain such a small amount of space and it looks so much worse
so not for me might be useful to others if they are really obsessive about this kind of thing though

I think it looks quite nice actually with the small icons. The Big ones look nice, but I'm sure many Windows users are more used to the small icons.
