Miserable audience...I would have stood up for that! Also, you have to try this piece to appreciate how bloody difficult it is! Plus he puts in little harder bits...like that huge scale at the end...its not actually written in the score.
I can't speak for the viola, but the bassoon part *does* have that scale at the end. In any case, it may be hard, but it's so much fun! I'm hoping I can convince the local community band director to do the bassoon/band arrangement of it at some point.
@frenchbassoon awww i see! well its not in the viola arrangement, he must have studied the bassoon original aswell... :) and oooh that should be good, if viola was my main instrument, i would want to play this, but given the chance to play a concerto, it would have to be the tchaikovsky piano concerto no. 1 :) good luck with it!
A good performance of the Rondo section, but the high part where you are practicably picking your nose (you viola players know what I mean) could barley be heard - which makes me sad because I worked my butt off to get that perfectly in tune (which is still isn't!) but to know it will just be covered up by the orchestra (much like a lot of the pice) is disheartening. I'm glad that I picked the Bloch Suite for Viola and Orchestra to audition in a competition with rather than this piece.
That statement is opinion, not fact. I've heard from more people that Bashmet is better as I'm sure you've heard more say Kashkashian is better. I enjoy listening to both. Hold them together as the greatest violists living today.
Actually Kim is better cuz she isnt a burnt out alcoholic. I watched her perform Bartok like with the Cleveland Orchestra and her performance put anything I have heard from Bashmet to shame. Although he is still FREAKING AMAZING. Just not as much so.
WORD UP YO KIM IS THE BEST. there's no other way to put it. she just kicks bashmet's ass. ( i also saw her Bartok with cleveland last spring and it was incredible...some of the most inspiring music making I've ever experienced)
Yeah, I agree that he didn't seem interested in the piece, but he played like it. He is the GREATEST violist ever. He can play any song and have people want to listen to it so I don't think that the audience was not entertained. He is a perfect player so no bad comments anymore please!!!!!!!!
I'm a big fan of Yuri Bashmet's-- I think he is one of the greatest living violists (along with Pinchas Zukerman and Kim Kashkashian)-- however, I was not excited by this particular performance. It's professional and clean, but somehow feels... routine. Granted, this is a very light piece-- there's nothing too deep about it-- but he just doesn't seem very engaged with the material. However, he can and does play romantic repertoire beautifully-- like Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata.
tbh, i don't think this is really the type of music he enjoys to play, i think he enjoys to play more darker music, hense why he gets so emotional during the schnitktte concerto, and songs like that....but he would have to put this weber song in to give the program more variety, but i don't know, i still love this performance though, and i would have been thrilled to be there and hear it!
Your right, I think the viola does sound better with darker music however this performance is almost as perfect as it can get, but thats just my opinion.
It isn't the string. It is the instrument. You need your bridge replaced with a better cut bridge. You might also benefit from a re-planing of the fingerboard.
Something is missing here. I'm not sure what it is, maybe the passion, maybe the technique, but it sounds somewhat subpar. Also I think a violist of his stature should play from memory and not need the music - it seems a little amateurish to me. The camera work is simply dreadful - focusing on musicians who are not playing - sad.
If he were just performing the piece with the orchestra as a guest it would be expected that he would play from memory, but he is also actually conducting the ensemble. The music may be more for the benefit of little notes written to himself so that he knows where to cue the orchestra. Also the sheer amount of repertoire he cranks out makes it almost impossible to memorize everything.
Uffa...perchè riesce a suonarlo così bene, così intonato e così veloce? Forse perchè è uri Bashmet....in ogni caso è vero, molti aspetti tecnici (che poi sono d'effetto) li ha tralasciati! così è un po' più semplice...I'm a violist too, I've been playing viola for 2 years, and now I'm playing this wonderful and hard piece; I love it!
I saw this great violist performance live many years ago in Boston, New england conservatory. 1988 or 89....That was his first appearance in united states and his first recital. There was a very very long standing ovation and he played some 6 encores. What a great violist he is !!!
i have most of his recordings but this is the first time i get to view this. thanks !!
I agree,,, Bashmet is a genius with the viola and I want to be as good as him,, but it will be hard,, or impossible,, please I WANT TO CONTATC WITH ALL TIPES OF MUSICIANS WHO WANTS TO TALK,, ESPECIALLY VIOLISTS,, SEND ME A MESSAGE IF YOU WANT TO. BYE
the piece is cool and I like how he sounds. I've seen other versions of this piece with much more technically challenging stuff in it, I hope he didnt simplify it, and he always looks so bored and out of connection with the music and just concentrating on technique and notes, so I didnt like his performance much.
He makes this seem so easy... !

he doesn't seem too happy when he finishes the piece....

i prefer the anna serova's version, this one is technically flawless however lacks a little bit of humor and roughtness.
i dont know i just prefer that way, but i love yuri anyway.

A nice piece well played. His viola has a fairly good tone except for the C string. But, I have heard very few violas with a good sounding C string.

my c string is a peice of crap, you cant even get to forte without it touching the fingerboard
