shades of the melody to the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I bought this on vinyl when it came out and I was already an old Marillion fan then. This just occurred to me now. It took a while for me to realize it but it's there.
Surely one of the most underrated tracks from one of the most underrated bands ever. The lyrics are simply better than anything Morrisey ever wrote - or anyone else for that matter! The music is as good as anything Pink Floyd or Genesis ever made - whilst being arguably more tastefully "straight ahead" . But how often is this album mentioned in those ubiquitous "Best album ever" lists? Conclusive proof of the injutice of the world!
I don't necessarily get the point... In my experience at least Marillion has always been seen as one of the greats by my contemporaries. Who cares what titles and awards the papers or the entertainment industry distributes among its supporters? I remember when they turned up unannounced, under an assumed name, at The Moles Club in Bath and just played for free like they were any other hopeful band trying to make their way in the world. That in itself puts them above most of their competition.
it's obvious that Marillions Fish era was the best rock era ever. And to be honest all his songs are little miracles of humans voice and interpretation, so....
yes the band did compose the music, although you build the tune around the words, you cant have a great tune without great lyrics its as simple as that ,without fish marillion frankly would have been crap, well there would not have been a marillion in those days, and that does not detract anything from pete, steve, ian, and mark indeed they are oustanding muscians.
Marillion with Fish was excellent. Fish without Marillion has varied between excellent and poor. Marilion without Fish started strong, but quickly lost its way, with only a few bright spots. While I respect the bands decision to go with a different style of singer, Hogarth just doesn't have much of a voice.
with respect mentalman, are you mad?,fish was Marillion, his work is simply outstanding his tunes are outstanding, this album is one of the best this planet has ever heard,Marillion with hogarth are frankly a joke.
Should have said more last week. Rothery's exceptional continual picking of the underlying harmony against Fish's vocal melody shows him to be one of the great finesse guitarists in prog - in a list that surely includes Steve Hackett (Genesis) and Steve Howe (Yes)....
My boyfriend is an absolute legend for introducing me to this song! So different to what I usually listen too, amazing!

@Yggdrist Totally agree on your comment. Fish and his solo career never took off and never would have done as he was such a major player in the group!
Hogarth was never in the same league, but some of his stuff was passible..

'm sorry, but the band itself composed almost all of fish-era music, fish just had lyrics and voice

Fish sings the songs in such a scottish manner that we can all understand his believe in each song he does!
I must admit my favourite has got to be Grendel!
