I think that it was played incredibly fast to match the excitement of the film. The purpose of the music is to enhance the film, not to be an artistic production tied to Joplin's maxim, "It is never right to play ragtime fast." At least the film is shown at the correct speed, not too fast.
It's good to see that the Museum shows silent films along with the Photoplayer. I think I'll never get to Utrecht, so I'm pleased to see (and hear!) whatever pieces of the Museum work their way onto YouTube.
