I'm married 32 years and didn't agonize over it like these actors are portraying. Rhis couple shoulda just started banging then it would have been much easier to have a long engagement.
@fallory I thought the same thing. It may be an old film, but it has s ome valid advice. But most people "in love" don't think straight enough to consult anyone, or listen to the consul they do get.
@Manonthe3up im the thumb comment deterant, Ive been leaving comments on everyones thumb comments about how lame their comment is. I dont believe they are funny even if clever, and I like blogging and shit on youtube so Im PISSED
They should show this film on the Maury Povich, Jerry Springer, and Steve Wilkos shows. No paternity drama. No DNA tests. No cheating. No "You're Are/You Are Not the Father", an so forth. It'll teach these people a lesson.
This is the way that it should be. But sadly it's not like that today.
Yeah, this actually wasn't bad. In addition to the reasoned caution against early marriage, there's also the acknowledgment that not everyone shares the same ideals/ religious views/ whatever. They also seem to be championing that women should get educations and be on the same intellectual (and potentially financial) level with their husbands.
Yeah, even though this short may have a few dubious comments and 'facts' the message is actually pretty modern and fair for it's time. Encouraging couples to take, and even more amazing, for the 50s, is that it discourage from rushing marriage. Fallory really hit it on the head with his two great posts.
There are some terrifying ideas coming from the religious right. I read a column by someone who advised people to get married SOONER rather than waiting and thinking about. The benefit was that although he went into debt, he got married when he was 22 and got to have sex early (the married kind), so being in debt and having kids early was a small price to pay for having married sex.
@spinemelter2000 Terrifying ideas from the religious right are quickly becoming a political force in our country. They believe that you can regulate, or should I say dictate moral values. Look back to the 30's and prohibition. Drinking was evil, so simply pass a law against it.
@fallory Agreed, actually. I was surprised by the level of companionate equality expressed in the short, given how social norms from the time were basically "shut up, woman, it's not your job to think."
@Gomess Really. If we had a tradition if similar backgrounds in my family, we'd have lost four generations of marriage. Morals and values are what's important and you don't need similar backgrounds for that. My wife and I come from totally different backgrounds and we get along just fine.
I was actually kinda surprised that the graph they drew up is pretty much the same as what they're saying these days. Huh! I guess I just assumed that people were still shunned back then if they weren't married by 20.
What's the difference between 19 and 21? Todays 21 are still at home....empty nest syndrome NO LONGER exists....its prayed for.
