We may never know whether Schubert meant to finish his most popular symphony as no manuscripts were ever found that indicated his intentions for a finale. Schubert met an early, untimely death and never heard it performed except in his head. This mysterious, brooding piece is famed for its instantly recognizable, gently lilting theme and plaintive conclusion. (Reader's Digest CD promotion leaflet)
@rustyflower09 this is actually inspired a lot by Beethoven, and many music experts/scholars today say that Beethoven was the bridge between the Classical and Romantic era (music wise).

lol thats the episode where homer and bart want to see the monster truck show with that metal t-rex car eating thingy, bart later on becomes a daredevil and attempts to jump springfield gorge :) If I recall correctly thats from 1989 episode 208 "Bart the Daredevil"
Actually, he wrote the first two movements when he was 25. He lived another 6 years and wrote his Symphony No. 9 in C Major but, for some reason, never finished Symphony No. 8.
Angra use the bit beginning at 1:30 for their "Unfinished Allegro" Never realised it was actually Schubert. I just assumed Angra were awesome classical composers.
From what I hear, it's unfinished not because he died before he could finish it, but because the first three movements were in triple time(3/4, 3/8, 3/4), and because he realized some of his themes resembled themes from Beethoven. Music from Rosamunde has the same key and instrumentation leading some to believe the 4th movement of this work was used for Schubert's ballet.
@eWiktor yeah, my favorite theme as a kid, watching Gargamel come out of his Liar... you would always hear this theme... excellent piece, easily his best work... I've listened randomly to some other stuff on here, piano sonatas, string quartets, but nothing is as good. can anyone recommend another similar or comparable Schubert piece ? many thanks for posting !
This performance has that Fürtwängler and Wagnerian dimension that is absolutely fabulous.Great psychic intensity and colorful textures here! What lush phrase contours.
Yeah, Lalala2304 is right. There are 4 movements in a standard Symphony. Only 2 movements were found in what is known as Schubert's Unfinished Symphony, hence the name.
It was played for the first time almost 40 years after the composers death. The composer died 6 years after writing these two movements.
It isn't known exactly why he didn't finish it. Many people say he died before he could finish it.
It certainly feels somewhat unifinished, but perhaps it was one of those projects that was abondoned due to the difficulty of continuing, it seemed to end so delightfully that it would be difficult to further without losing direction and pace.
It is unfinished for many reasons... the one that I have been told that makes the most sense to me is that the theme, when played, never finishes. If looking at the music, take measure 52 for cello; it should end the phrase with a G, but it goes E, F#, and then the next phrase.
Even though this piece is structurally unfinished - lacking the final two movements normal for a symphony of the time - I feel that it's very complete musically. As a piece of music, it is brilliant, and when it ends, the listener is satisfied.
my orchestra teacher ruined it for us, 2hr practices for 3 weeks practicing this, ir drove me crazy. This song ruined my wrist too. It was swollen for 3 days after the concert. The blood sweat and tears to be princible 2nd violin.
At least your hand recovered. Mine never will. Let what happened to me be a lesson to all violinists: get a good bow for you. I used my father's old bow for years. He uses a carbon composite. I use hollow steel. Opposite ends of the spectrum of flexibility. I either have tendonitis or arthritis (can't get a sure diagnosis) from 3 years of using the wrong bow. When I got a good one, it was too late. If it's bad enough that you actually can't move your hand, stop and rest. Don't do what I did.
That's the Mozart symphony standard. Fast, slow, fast, faster. Beethoven turned that on its head by writing minor keys in and putting slow things in places they typically didn't go and adding a 5th movement at times...just added as some extra info to build on "usually."
Actually, it is known as his unfinished symphony because he skipped finishing it to start and complete his 9th symph. He wanted to reach the precedent set by Beethoven by composing 9 symphonies. He planned to complete the 8th after completing the 9th, but he died before he could finish it. He was able to compose his entire 9th symphony, though. Many people think he stopped writing his 8th because he went crazy, died, or was simply too emotionally wracked by it; all are common misconceptions.
He wanted to reach the precedent that Beethoven had set, so he skipped finishing his 8th symphony so that he could compose his 9th symphony and, hopefully, complete the 8th later. He died before he could, probably of syphilis.

Why do anglophonic people call every piece of music a "song"? It's so bizarre. The French, on the other hand, frequently call every song a "musique". Come on, where are the Gattungen?
Because most of us are American idiots who have never heard Schubert's name, even less his music, but have commited the smallest details of Britney Spears' worthless life to permanent memory.
The conductor had to catch a plane right after the concert.
