I went in 2007. It rained and the race was cut short. The reason I like this video is because it shows the 1961 T - Bird pace car. My parents had a 61 TBird coupe. The museum at the track is awesome. I'd love to go again someday.
Rare film footage of the Historic Cooper Climax rear engine car at speed..in 3 years the Front Engined Roadsters would win there last race (1964) Thanks for sharing
This is really cool, especially knowing that my parents and both sets of my grandparents were at this race!!! Thank you for this trip down memory lane....
I'm Dan Ratto, Ray is actually my Great Uncle (I made a mistake before) as well My Mom is Lillian Harroun and my Grandmother Is Alice Harroun, We live on Longisland in New York. Ask your Mother if she knows us!
wow! i may only be 13 years of age but i have a great respect for history and machines and i love it when the two are put together! i go to the 500 every year and it is just heaven there for me! thanks for this vid!
Wow have thing changed...when was the last you saw a tree right next to the track?...nice footage of the previous Indy 500 winning cars too...the first car shown is the Marmon Wasp, 1st indy 500 winner 1911.
Foyt's car is easy to pick out, thanks to the red nose cone. The white car right in front of him is Eddie Sachs. This film nicely documents what a close race it was for them. Just a gem of a video. Thanks so much.
Great video. Every time I go to the 500, looking at the grandstands from both inside the track and outside, I think of all the history that has occurred at 16th and Georgetown. Thanks for a peek back in time.
Great footage near the end of Jack Brabham's Cooper-Climax. I've seen lots of racing film, but I can't say that I've ever seen colour film of that car under power at Indy. Quality!
Thank you for posting this. This was the first year I went to Indy. I was sitting in the same stand the first shots are from. I'm still going and still love it, but man...those were race cars.
Thanks for posting that. My first 500 was in 1973, when I was 8, and I haven't missed one since. It's great to see these old clips. Great stuff for those of us who love Indy, particularly its history.
I've been to 37 Indy's.... my first was in 1970. It's ALWAYS fascinating to see how the IMS has changed over the years. I'm glad you posted this super 8! Thank you!
Great video, could almost hear my own dad's old super 8 projector's hum while I watched this. Notice how many trees in the infield, including one right up near the track past turn four. this was the year Sach's came in for tires just a few laps from the end, and gave AJ his first win.
That's the tree my father and uncle sat under when they filmed a 1950's Indy 500. I hope to get that posted soon. Their 1963 film is on my page. Thanks for sharing this great film!

I was 13 also when I saw this race, my first. I was in turn 2. Jack Brabham ran the first rear engined car, and finished 9th.

Did Jack Brabham ever return to the Indy 500?

You are a lot like I was at your age, but I could only listen to the races on the radio. Even on the radio those old races were exciting.
