  • I did this at a competition and got the highest rank.. now im going to state... wish me luck

  • @TheOreMiner Good luck, friend!

  • how old were you when you played that?

  • @OliverDuarte88 This was my high school junior year, 17. Thanks for listening,

  • What kind of sax/mouthpiece do you use?

  • @mightyfein422 I play on a Selmer Mark 6 with a Selmer S90 mouthpiece and Vandoren blud 3.5 reeds.

  • You're really good. My friend played this 2 years ago and told me to try it and I'm really screwed for districts in 3 weeks

  • My private instructor wants me to play this and he showed me your clip... You have amazing tone and your vibrato is amazing! I could only hope to play this piece as well as you did. Best of luck to you.

  • @Mascaira1o1 Thanks very much for the kind comment. It's really nice to know that a saxophone teacher has used this video as a reference. Good luck with the piece. Thanks.

  • I performed this for my state solo competition as well. You have one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard and your vibrato is amazing. Thank you for inspiring me to be a better performer and put so much more passion into my music.

  • @mademyline Thank you so much for your kind comments. Good luck to you in making beautiful music!

  • ohh.. you vibrato is wonderfull.. I love it !!

  • Awesome vibrato I might be doing this solo at contest next year so this video really helps good job!

  • うちの部長がこの曲でソロコンに出ました!

    少ない時間で頑張って練習してたのを見て

    初めて尊敬しました。

    これからも頑張れ部長!!

    ずっと応援してます。

  • cool

  • really good sound but I think you overused the vibrato

  • @ap1027 I agree...Im a Music Major at the UA and my professor that the first few phrases don't use vibrato but Idk exactly why...but your vibrato is very stable, bravo.

  • @TheChilo1112000 I disagree. This is a French piece and should be played "French", with vibrato. Listen to the Londeix and Delange's recordings. Viv la French style!

  • @TheChilo1112000 I am an Art Major from the UA and I think TheChilo1112000 has no idea what he is talking about.

  • I played this exact solo today and i didnt do as good as this guy

  • im a freshmen in highschool and am playing this for state solo/ensamble. It's a very beautiful piece and im very impressed

  • NIce Vibrato man! incredible

  • @Simonlh1 Thanks!

  • dude, awesome job! i'm actually playing this song for solos and ensembles this year! this will help me out a lot to see how some rhythms go and how it sounds!

  • Oh my gosh, I know you from Whitewater band camp! You're a fantastic player! Where are you going now?

  • @intwtfkjr Hi. Lately I'm a sophomore at Lawrence University as a music major.

  • @saxophoney Very nice. I had a feeling that you would go for a music major. How is Lawrence? I'm thinking of playing in the band while going there for chemistry if they accept me.

  • Wow :) simply amazing, great job!

  • @googlexxx999 Thank you for the kind compliment.

  • Thank you for being awesome! now I know what it sounds like!

I'm playing this song this year for solo&ensemble.

  • Fantastic sound! This is one of the best high school saxophone tones I've ever heard. Great job! Kids out there, listen and emulate this!

  • @thesaxguru He's not a high school player

  • @OliverDuarte88 Actually this video was recorded when I was a junior in high school.

  • you sound awesome! what kind of saxophone do you have??

  • Thanks a lot. I play a Selmer Mark 6 with a Selmer s90 mouthpiece. Thanks for listening and commenting.

  • This is great! I'm playing this piece this year for my university rep! After listening to this video I'm actually pretty pumped to play it :)

  • Great, glad to hear that. Thanks for listening.

  • That tone is just so incredible! What is your secret?

  • Thanks for the kind compliment. I've listened to some great classical saxophonists like Londeix, Rousseau, Tse, Delange, and have tried to develop my tone along those lines. Thanks for listening.

  • I must also say, AWESOME!

I too am playing this this year, your video helped me a lot when I wasn't sure how to play something.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Great. Glad this video helped you.

  • Awesome! I'm doing it for this years WI Solo and Ensembe :)

I must implore, were you rushing towards the end? I feel like I'm much slower, but still in tempo while playing along...

  • Thanks for listening and for commenting. Rushing? Don't know. Seems to be the same tempo as the Claude Delangle recording I have. Get out your metronome and practice, practice!

  • Phil-

Great post, thanks! I use YT more and more so my students can SEE a good performance instead of just listen...thought I would never say that. Are you going performance, ed, comp at LU? I have taught for 35 years in NE area and if you would like to come out and work with my saxes, which are decent, get back to me here or Valders High. We have 4 solos, two trios and a sax choir. $

  • Wow thanks a lot that's a really nice compliment. I'm studying saxophone performance with Profs. Steven Jordheim and Sara Kind at LU. I'll drop you an email. Thanks for listening!

  • OMG !!!!! I'm going to play this on a contest sin april and i hope i'l be as half as good as you . Your playing gave me some good ideas And btw why so fast on the second part ???

  • Good luck at contest. I think that's the proper tempo for the second part.

  • I'm gonna play this at MN state contest. I hope to shred the place up.

Thanks for this vid. It helped me tackle learning this monster of a piece. It's not too tough when you know what it sounds like.

  • Good luck but don't worry about shredding up the place. Just play beautiful music.

  • I am preforming this for an audition VERY soon and am not quite confident in myself...do you have ANY pointers??

  • Practice! Be confident in your playing. Master the music and play like you're in control and confident and you'll be fine. Thanks for listening.

  • Thanks for posting this! I'm playing this for college auditions, and hearing it played really well helped with my musical concept. Thanks a thousand times over :)

  • You're welcome. thanks a lot for listening and for commenting.

  • You have a haunting and beautiful sound. You're right in front of us and yet you sound like you're far away. Meanwhile, this composition is really marvelous. Please do more videos!

  • Great tone!! I picked up my alto after many years off after studying with Hempke at Northwestern. Performing Chanson in a couple weeks.

  • Thanks. Good luck with your performance.

  • Hey I'm in the market for a new saxophone, I'm pretty sure I want a Selmer. Have you had any experience with the series II or III? Or would you completely recommend the Mark

  • Very sorry about the late reply. I don't think that you can go wrong with any Selmer or the new Yamaha series saxes.

  • dude u r amazing!i was plannin on playin this song next year!just outta curiosity though wat kind of mouthpiece do you use because u got great sound!

  • Thanks. I play on a selmer s90-180 mouthpiece on a mark iv which I really like. I also use vandoren blue 3 1/2 reeds with a rovner ligature. Good luck with the piece next year!

  • Hey meen u are good!!!

I play that too and i was on the second rank on the contest!!

Excuse me but i am portugues and i cant speak and read englisch as good as u

but respect. u are really good

  • Thank you very much.

  • You have a great sound. Another great professor to take private saxophone lessons from would Dr. Paul Bro at Indiana State University.

  • Thanks. I'll be studying with Prof. Steven Jordheim at Lawrence University in Wisconsin next fall. I'm really looking forward to it. Thanks again

  • Thats Awesome!!! Jordheim is a wonderful teacher. I also auditioned for his studio this year and I was also accepted, but i decided to go study with Dr. Rousseau at the university of minnesota. This is a really nice recording. Maybe we will meet someday at a competition or master class!

  • What a coincedence. I also auditioned with Dr. Rousseau at UMN but decided to attend Lawrence. Dr. Rousseau is a really nice man. I attended his saxophone camp last summer and have posted two recital night performances on MY YT page, one is a sax quartet. Good luck at uMN!

  • Hey I make all of my students play this for solo and ensemble. how cool to see someone from the midwest playing this. I grew up in chicago btw! I went to school with Ken Tse btw. You have a great start. I would suggest doing some more work with a recorder to match up the vibrato in some places but i'm sure you already knew that.

  • Thanks the comments. I had a lesson wiht Prof. Tse and auditioned with him in Feb. and was accepted into his sax studio at U of Iowa as a freshman. Although in the end I'll be attending Lawrence University in fall 2009 to study with Prof. Steven Jordheim I know Kenneth Tse to be a great artist and a nice man.

  • I see you studied sax at Champange Urbana. I was also accepted into Prof. Richtmeyer's studio and she too is great. I heard her perform the Creston Concerto a few months ago at Northwestern.

  • UIUC was my undergraduate degree. I have had lessons with many saxophonists (murphy, rousseau, hemke, stusek, etc..) but I found Richtmeyer to be the best teacher. You should consider after Lawrence studying at UIUC for your MM. its competitive for assistantship but if you work hard I'm sure you can get one.

  • legendary tone, dang!

  • Thank you very much for the kind compliment.

  • Thank you for sharing, your tone is almost unbelievable for playing in the holes that they put us in at state...your video is very useful for (us) teachers to use as fine examples...perhaps you could whip off the "Dorian Elegy" that is on the list, it is pretty easy but the vids on the list are BAD. Hope you are continuing in music, best of luck!

  • You're very kind. Thank you for listening. I played Dorian Elegy in my Freshman year but don't have the recording. I've working on college auditions this past month or two an am waiting now for some good news to come back. Thanks again.

  • I'm also in Wisconsin and going to state with this piece, although you can play it better than I can. Amazing tone.

  • Thanks a lot. Good luck at state! I'll be at UW Parkside this year with our HS jazz band only (no time for a solo this year.)

  • The way you play this song is amazing...I am playing this song but I'm only in 7th grade so it is no where near this good.

  • Thanks for the nice comment. Keep practicing and listen to great saxophonists like Londeix and Rousseau and Tse.

  • Great job... I am taking this to contest this year... Heh, in Wisconsin as well.

Maybe we'll see each other at state.

What grade are you in on this video?

What model of saxophone are you using?

  • Thanks. I was junior last year when this was recorded. Actually wanted to play the 3rd and 2nd movements of the Creston Sonata but they wouldn't let me because I'd done the Creston's 1st and 2nd movement freshman year. I'm playing on a Selmer Mark VI with a selmer s90 mouthpiece and vandoren trad. 3-1/2 reeds. Thanks for listening. When I've gone to state, they hold it at UW Parkside so maybe if your area goes there also, watch for me to say hi.

  • hey what colleges u lookin at? i got some 4 u if ur lookin in performance or like music ed

  • one of my good friends is doing this for contest this year.. you did a great job, it sounds amazing.

  • Thanks for listening.

  • Love this piece... my contest piece for this year. You sound amazing on it.

  • Thanks!

  • hey. u have good tone, and ur vibrato is good it just needs to be more shallow. so wat was ur rating?

  • Thanks. I got a first with and Exemplary Soloist award.

  • Oh Phil. How many recordings do you have up on youtube? At least I find them entertaining haha.

    ~Matt

  • dude nice sound and vibrato 2!!!

  • Thanks!

  • very nice. a selmer c-star would lend itself well to this style. very french.

  • Thanks. I play on a selmer s90-180, which is similar to the C*. I tried the C* an ,S80, an LT, and the S90 and found that it worked best for me. Thanks for commenting.

  • i am actually doing that piece this year for solo and ensemble and hearing that really gives me an idea on what to do so thank btw that is a grade A piece i am guessing?

  • Great. I'm glad that this may help you in your performance. yes, this is a Class A piece. I have recordings of both Jean Marie Londeix and Claude Delange playing it, so I know it's a respected work.

  • yea man thanks for it sorry i meant class A

  • MAAN your vibrato is so beautiful.

    amazing !

  • Thank you.Hello from the USA!

  • MAAN your vibrato is so beautiful.

    amazing !

  • Very nice!!!!!

  • Thank you very much.

  • Umm Phil why did you play this. I believe I saw a video of you playing the creston concerto. This is way that in level of difficulty. Still nice to see you played it nicely. Nice vibrato.

  • It's a long story.I wanted to play the 3rd & 2nd mvt.s of the Creston Sonata, but couldnt due to rules(I played mvt 1$2 last year). i was too busy working on the Creston concerto and the Grundman Concertante for concerto competitions this year to learn yet another top level piece for solo ensemble, so I had to play the Rueff piece or nothing at all, so I played it. I'm glad i did because it turned out fairly well. Thanks for commenting.

  • Nice job Phil, hey what brand and model of sax do you play on? and have u looked muczynski's sonata yet? i dont mean do be annoying about that but i really do think u wud make that piece sound great

  • I have a Selmer Mark 6 and a Selmer s90 mouth piece. Funny you should mention the Muczynski sonata. I did buy it a few weeks ago. It is a cool piece. Have't spent a whole lot of time on it though. I'm currently working on the Fuzzy Bird Sonata. Have you heard that piece? Some guy posted a performance on YT and I got a CD of Nicolas Prost playing it. That is an awesome piece.

  • thats a nice sax! i havent heard of that piece, but maybe il try it out sometime

  • thanks. Chanson et Passipied is a standard piece of the classic saxophone repertoire and has been recorded by Londiex and Delangle.

  • Wow- that was wonderful! I played this piece at 4 solo festivals this year and came out with four superiors, one 3rd place, and one 2nd place. However, my tone is not nearly as smooth and soft as yours! And your vibrato is so full and controlled! (I always seem to have trouble towards the end, too, with all of those long runs). How long have you been playing? What year are you in highschool?

  • Thanks for watching. I am going to be a senior next school year. I've been playing since 5th grade so about 6 and a half years. Thanks for watching and Im glad you liked it.

  • Hey Phil,

My name is Cole Hanson, and I'm an alto saxophonist along with you in the State Honor Band. I was wondering, would you be interested in possibly forming a quick quartet at camp this year...possily doing Mountain Roads or Bennett's Saxophone Symphonette? (I already got dibs on alto :) )

  • Cole,Thanks for asking. I'd be glad to play in the quartet. I have both a tenor and soprano and can play either one. I'd prefer to play tenor if that's fine. Let me know.

  • Hey good job, i just got done playing this for a recital, it's an awesome piece, however i was wondering what type of mouth piece, strength and type of reed you play on. You have a wonderful tone, its very smooth.

  • Thanks for the kind comments. I play a Selmer Mark VI with a Selmer s90 mouthpiece and Vandoren blue 3.5 reeds. This is a fine piece and has been recorded by Londeix and Delangle. I hope your recital went well.

  • Beautifully done Phil. Love your tone and vibrato!

  • Thank you very much.

  • you get a one? And how about outstanding soloist?

  • yeah i got an exemplary soloist award on it. the judge also gave some nice comments on the French style of playing saxophone which was new and refreshing. thanks for commenting.

  • You get better and better everytime I see you Phil. Remember me? Yeah, still havent perfected the Creston. lol. But yeah. U did great on this piece.

  • Sure do, how's things in FL? Thanks a lot for the nice comment.

  • Its ok here. Just changed schools a while back. Im 1st chair in my band.=)

But my condutor took away our only piece with an alto sax solo in it. I was mad. It sounds like this piece is easier than the Creston?

Ill have a look at it.

  • Very very nice! Beautiful tone...tasteful vibrato.

  • Thanks!
