The lower 2 strings are low sounding, but not low enough to be inaudible. The only reason he doesn't play on those 2 strings very much is all about the placement/sound of the notes he is playing. On the bass, we can play the same note on different strings, but in a piece like this, it's just much more convenient to play on the top 2 strings and doesn't require the bassist to move their hand as much as they would have to move it if they also played the lower notes on the low strings.
I am fascinated by this. I've started playing around with the cello recently. I can only imagine how hard this is. By the way, I noticed he rarely uses the two lower strings. Are the in the audible range or just reserved for calling elephants?
I'm speechless. I mean seriously... this guy can play this on the double bass. That makes people who can play this on the cello look like little weaklings... He's definitely the 'Yoda' of the cello.
I watch the six movements of this on here almost every week. It's so unbelievably excellent; the LSO must be so lucky to have a huge number of insanely talented musicians that they do. This man must be amazing to play beside.
@jsanchezpcr708 That's supposed to be Barroque-style grip. Not necessary, but interesting to see. If you want to try it, you need to find the balance point of your bow and grab it placing your thumb right there or slightly towards the frog. You only use the two middle quarters of the bow (most of the time), and not too much weight, but rather bow speed. Good luck!
i don't know if this is actually encouraging or just scares the rest of us students out there but Ibragimov shows right here why he is the principle bass player of the LSO

Our band director picked this piece for our chair auditions. I am in the top band, but still, this is for a cello, not french horn.
