The lower 2 strings are low sounding, but not low enough to be inaudible. The only reason he doesn't play on those 2 strings very much is all about the placement/sound of the notes he is playing. On the bass, we can play the same note on different strings, but in a piece like this, it's just much more convenient to play on the top 2 strings and doesn't require the bassist to move their hand as much as they would have to move it if they also played the lower notes on the low strings.

  • not human...

  • Hum, I'm wondering if he is tuned like a cello to play this.

  • Ragequit.

  • I am fascinated by this. I've started playing around with the cello recently. I can only imagine how hard this is. By the way, I noticed he rarely uses the two lower strings. Are the in the audible range or just reserved for calling elephants?

  • this has really encouraged me and found this really useful in helping me play the fryba suites

  • seriously? 3 dislikes? :O

  • And he is such a great person, i write him and he answer 5 minutes later :)....

  • I'm speechless. I mean seriously... this guy can play this on the double bass. That makes people who can play this on the cello look like little weaklings... He's definitely the 'Yoda' of the cello.

  • amazing !!! merveilleux !!! impresionante , no creo que se pueda mas.

  • i think ima try learning something a little easier....like splitting atoms...Gotta start somewhere right?....

  • Only ex - cellist can play like that. I'm sure of that more than anything else :)

    Amazing performance !

  • I watch the six movements of this on here almost every week. It's so unbelievably excellent; the LSO must be so lucky to have a huge number of insanely talented musicians that they do. This man must be amazing to play beside.

  • I quit.

  • what I would do to get my hands on that bass...

  • THIS IS WONDERFUL

  • Monster Playing!

  • does any one know where i can get the music for these songs for bass?

  • @billwillbass1

you can read the cello part in tenor clef

  • БРАВО!!!

  • Our band director picked this piece for our chair auditions. I am in the top band, but still, this is for a cello, not french horn.

  • WOW look at that bow grip! totaly unusual to me, y should try it!

  • @jsanchezpcr708 That's supposed to be Barroque-style grip. Not necessary, but interesting to see. If you want to try it, you need to find the balance point of your bow and grab it placing your thumb right there or slightly towards the frog. You only use the two middle quarters of the bow (most of the time), and not too much weight, but rather bow speed. Good luck!

  • you need a baroque bow to do it properly though.

  • excellent.

  • a magnificent series

  • Fantastic!

  • bravo!

  • this is awesome.

  • i don't know if this is actually encouraging or just scares the rest of us students out there but Ibragimov shows right here why he is the principle bass player of the LSO
