i wanted to ask you if putting in veneers requires them to be replaced frequently of is it done because there is a unerlying problem to the tooth itself?
and the second question that i have seen lots people with veeners and their unlying teeth is black which can be seen just above the veener?whats that?
third one i have heard that its not just one off cost the cost of maintainance is also there if you have veneers?
@nickcolio1 Thank you for your questions. Veneers do not need to be replaced frequently. Decay or breakage are two common reasons to replace veneers. The black around the restoration could be from the underlying tooth color showing through due to the thin porcelain, contamination during the bonding steps, or perhaps they are not veneers but porcelain over metal crowns.
The maintenance is simple: brush, floss, visit your dentist at least twice a year so they can inspect.
@spikefivefivefive - This laser system is actually designed to cut tooth, gum tissue and bone. The Waterlase allows the user to precisely shaping tooth structure (enamel, or dentin). The laser energy interacts with natural tooth structure in a very different way than a veneer. A veneer is porcelain glass so the laser light/ energy just passes thru it & interacts with the resin glue underneath. We use the Waterlase MD everyday when removing decay instead of the traditional dental drill.
@spikefivefivefive - Great question! Here we are trying to use the laser energy to reverse the adhesive bond. The laser energy passes through the porcelain veneer and interacts with the adhesive layer connecting the veneer to the natural tooth structure. This laser system is an excellent tool to use on natural tooth structure. It offers a minimally invasive way to treat patients and in many cases eliminates the need for blades or drills. This means faster healing for you!
Did this patient have "non prep" veneers? Is there any advantage to older veneer technology where they first shave your teeth down before application?
@etamlous - This patient had minimal prep veneers. This is not older technology just a different technique used when the no-prep technique will not give us the end result desired. Every patient is different and obviously have different size, shape, angulation, and condition of teeth. The desired end result and the shape and position of the patients teeth determine which technique can be used to optimize the outcome.
I can only speak for our practice...we do not use any products that contain MMA. In the past provisional restorations were made of acrylic and utilized a powder and liquid monomer that contained MMA. Today's we use composite materials to fabricate provisional restorations due to the superior aesthetics we can obtain.
Once veneers are bonded to your teeth they become part of the natural tooth due to the adhesive bonding process. You brush and floss them just like teeth without veneers.
Obviously if there is not a problem you would not remove them. However, if a problem does occur such as cracking, or breakage from some event then there is a solution to remove and replace them other than cutting them off.
It is not natural for gum tissue to recede. Trauma, gum/ bone disease, or decay around the gum tissue can cause recession. Your dentist should evaluate your specific situation and needs prior to placing any restorations. Proper home care and commitment to regular dental visits is a requirement if you wish to maintain health teeth and gums regardless if you have veneers or not.
You can change the veneers if they crack. You only change them if needed. Discoloration occurs because of decay, staining, or leakage. Regular visits to the dentist can allow them to inspect the veneers and detect any issue early. Preventative maintenance just like natural teeth is very important.
Why are some white and nice and others a little yellow? If I want them to be real white can they order me the real white ones?Even though the rest of my teeth are white but not extremely white..
Teeth vary in color. The color will be selected by your and your dentist then prescribed to the dental lab where a ceramist will fabricate your veneers based on the color selected. Complex color matching is possible with modern veneers. Veneer are customized to fit your specific needs.
can veneers damage the surface of your natural teeth? Throught the years, I wonder if they could fall off. I wonder if it's painful, I heard that every tooth has to be "polished down" before applying the veneer. These can also be expensive.
Veneers do not damage your teeth. Decay, trauma, or abuse will damage natural or veneered teeth. Veneers are an investment in your appearance and health. You should expect that they will last for many years with proper care home care and regular dental visits. We routinely see patients with veneers placed 15-25 years ago that are in excellent condition. Not many things you purchase have a service life of 10-15+ years.
I'm not familiar with Vaneers. Lumineer is a brand name of Porcelain. They are bonded the same way as any other veneering porcelain. No difference. The only difference is the marketing. There are different types of porcelains from different companies therefore there are different brand names. The only difference is that lumineers are marketed to consumers and most others are marketed to dentist.
So Vaneers and Lumineers are both porcelain? are they both applied the same way? the person in this video did they volunteer to do this video to show how they come off with a laser? because I would imagine if they had a real problem they would not be removing all of them at once right? You stated marketed to consumers and dentist is there a price difference pending on the type of porcelain used? and one more questions is it best to do the top 8 at once? so teeth match?
Yes, applied the same way. This patient wanted her veneers replaced because they were damaged by the previous dentist during bonding. Veneers are fragile until they are bonded. Once bonded they are as strong as enamel. We removed old veneers and replaced all at one time. I recommend treating at least 8 to 10 teeth for a uniform color match if you want to go whiter. Many people forget that you see yourself from the front but others see you from the side.
thanks I had my two teeth next to my two front teeth bonded way back in 1987 and in 1998 the one on the right broke sideways while eating I hit a Cornish hen bone! well as you know back then when they bonded they took alot of your original tooth away so when it broke my dentist took my entire tooth off to the gum line and put a fake tooth in with post. He said in xrays the tooth was fractured up in the gumline and eventually it would all have to be removed. i am terrified to do this and not sure
what to do now it has lasted all these years however it is starting to decay between that tooth and the side of front tooth I am freaking out with no dental plan on what to do! I don't know if they are going to say you need a flipper YUK! or implant which I am afraid of due to it being a front tooth where there is risk of damaging sinus canals and paralysis. I have nice looking teeth discolored but nice I want them all to match no matter what has to be done KWIM
Implants are very successful & damage to sinus/ nerves is not an issue when placed by an experienced dentist/specialist. Today we have 3D imaging that removes uncertainty & allows complications to be uncovered prior to placement. Look for a dentist in your area that has an excellent track record with cosmetic and complex cosmetic cases. Your case is a challenge but an excellent result should be possible with careful planning. Good luck!
Thanks I am looking as I am a bit vain when it comes to my smile LOL so I will not let just anyone work on them! I just learned some dentist are using laser vrs drills and no shots/needles to me that is just wow, but not sure if everyone has been trained to use the lasers I am going to look into that further. I just know I have to be prepared once I let them touch the cavity in that front tooth I will have to know what to do with it next.
@pjbroome Veners are placed after the enamel has been removed; the resulting tooth will have about the same dimensions as the initial tooth; Lumineers are placed directly on the existing tooth, no tooth mass removed; this is why the Lumineers always give a bulky look to the teeth
You would not change out the veneers unless there was a problem or the patient wants to make the veneers whiter. Veneers don't change color. Staining of natural tooth structure, recession, or recurrent decay around veneers can occur. This happens with natural teeth as well.
Veneer act like a new layer of enamel over the tooth. If your smile is "almost perfect" you may not be a candidate for veneers. These veneers were very thin, very little tooth structure was removed. Since they were so thin they cracked when they were bonded. Porcelain is fragile until bonded -once bonded it is extremely strong. Think about porcelain floor tile that you walk on every day. You can break a piece of tile in your hand but once it's glued to the floor you can walk on it many years.
Bonding creates a chemical bond to the underlying tooth structure (enamel or dentin) so all underlying tooth structure is protected. Since there is still natural tooth structure present (back, sides of teeth, under gum tissue) you still must brush, floss and have regular dental check-ups to monitor any restoration (crowns, veneers, inlays/ onlays) just like natural teeth.
Tooth Structure under the veneers are protected by the bonding process. As long a the bond holds the tooth structure is protected. You must take care of your teeth just like natural teeth. Regular dental visits allow the dentist to check all your teeth and detect any issues early on natural or restored teeth.
Most dental offices will offer to warranty the porcelain from material defects. These veneers are not Lumineers. Lumineers are a brand name of porcelain. There's lots of different types of porcelain brands. As long as you maintain regular dental visits for check-ups there is little need for extended warranties.
The patient did pay for these to be replaced. We did not place the original veneers so yes there was a fee for us to remove, correct preparations, fabricate new veneers, and place them correctly.

it has been removed since it contained patient specific information. The was filmed during an in-office training course and all efforts have been made to protect patient privacy. The focus of this video is on the technique.
The previous set of veneers were broken during the bonding process. The patient decided to wear them even with the cracks instad of having them cut off. Now that we have a non-invasive way to remove them she was excited to replace and make them even brighter!

Gee, I have so many questions. Why were they removed? If new set of veneers are not placed, are teeth more prompt to decay? Are they any weaker? Hope you can answer them.
On a slightly different topic and generally speaking, would a 30-35 year old benefit form braces? Don't braces make teeth weaker and more prompt to falling off?
Removed to replace since the old set was cracked during placement. New set of veneers must be placed to rebuild enamel layer and build out new contour/ color. Once bonded veneers are very strong.
Patients at almost any age with healthy bone and gum tissue can benefit from braces. Brace do not make teeth weaker. Braces move the teeth to a new aligned location that provides correct occlusion (bite) and function.
