  • wow, that is a squier strat, usually big artist like her use more expensive instruments.

  • That was probably the best cover i've heard in a long time. she truly did it justice. kept the emotional content intact and also made it her own. still exciting and interesting. f*ck you haters. its beautiful.

  • llove u patty.....the best verse ever..

  • Bill Burroughs may be conveying the message to take your vitamins and enjoy the newest in entertainment & education to be found on my youtube channel...blue

  • i have always loved patti and kurt is my favourite hands down and i have just found it at a strange time in my life so it means a lot. its great isnt it?

  • Is this Will Smith?

  • Nirvana is so much better...

  • @xXSlippyTurdXx This takes away what Nirvana stands for..........GRUNGE

  • @Cinderblade kurt so did not stand for grunge...he hated labels...and he thought patti smith was awesome, so i think hed love this cover. and be very flattered that she did it.

  • @starbellygrrl you are dead right m' dear i dont think Leadbelly is quite "grunge" was he?kurt hated the grunge label that got stuck on him.

  • @Cinderblade yeah, except that patti smith was the original GRUNGE... look her up and get a clue.

  • @meowziee. I don't no your age but Patti is a beautiful woman with a great voice and she is also my favorite musician too. I rally hope that she is coming to Holland in 2012. I'll go yto this Grande dame of Punk. Peace for all of you. Claudy

  • Patricia Lee "Patti" Smith (born December 30, 1946)[1] is an American singer-songwriter, poet and visual artist, who became a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses.[2]

Called the "Godmother of Punk",[3] her work was a fusion of rock and poetry. Smith's most widely known song is "Because the Night", which was co-written with Bruce Springsteen and reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978.[2]

  • @Pantharen In 2005, Patti Smith was named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture,[4] and in 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[5] On November 17, 2010, she won the National Book Award for her memoir Just Kids. She is also a recipient of the 2011 Polar Music Prize.

  • excellent now i know all the lyrics thxs patti.love these version not a cover 2 methinks..................

  • I love this woman since 35 years!!! I'm pretty sure that the banjo player with a cap is her son, Jackson

  • @696303 steve earle plays the banjo on the actual recording

  • @696303 Maybe, but I don't talk about the recording, but about the video. Look closely at 4:55. Sincerely, he looks like Jackson, not at all like Steve earle. Maybe she asked her son to play only on the video..

  • To those saying Kurt Cobain would be upset w/this cover, you might want to learn some musical history. Smith is considered by many to be the "godmother of Punk" and Cobain was by all accounts a big fan. To many musicians (and Cobain would likely have felt this), having Smith take note of you would be a big deal, to cover you b/c she is a fan of your music the chance of a lifetime. Great covers don't imitate the originals, they rethink them. If you want pure imitation watch American Idol.

  • and it's certainly better than any other version.

  • this version fucking rules

  • que vercion mas chota

  • "le ciel est vide",trailer.

  • @syk257 he doesn't have a grave, and I doubt he'd be upset with this.

  • Patti is a legend.

  • @DannyGlumsPhan

    That's an understatement.

  • So THEY are the words.. Never knew all of them.

  • Oh my. This is excellent.

  • i agree with bklo70. i would never hear cover better done the bango is awsome thx patti smith

  • best cover ever, love the banjo

  • @meowziee that's what it's happening to me! I'm 13 and nobody of my age knows her :(

  • One of the best covers i herd. very cool.

  • I don't think anyone will ever do it better than Nirvana so don't think you can change a few words and make it better. Sometimes it's just minor things that can make a song incredible compared to just good. Albino is technically correct but the sound of al-bean-o with the rest of the stanza. And when you heard the original did you go and try to find out what the heck an al-bean-o was? It draws people in.

  • Sorry, did not like it. Cannot stand the way she pronounces "dangerous" (the 1st few times). She changes al-bean-o to albino. Does she think Kurt didn't know what he was doing? When one says albinism it IS pronounced al-bean-ism. And the biggest sin of all, this is the only version I have seen, there is no repeated "denial" at the end.

To me, when it comes to covers of good songs either try copy exactly or make it completely your own. I cannot stand half.

  • is good

  • @meowziee I'm 49 and I've always loved Patti Smith! Always been a for real rebel artist, ahead of her time, and yes, beautiful.. she's beautiful because she's one of those performers who really lets her audience see her in her art.

  • beautiful guitar!

  • This version and the version by Tori Amos are really good... I prefer Tori Amos' though - it's somehow more heartfelt. RIP Kurt.

  • NICK FAGGOT

  • Nick Faggot

  • reminds me of left 4 dead

  • trinity

  • The Queen of Punk Rock...the Song of Grunge...simply fantastic.

  • does anyone know what albums this off , this is awesome ??

  • @beeingkarina1 this is from her covers album called ''twelve''

  • Comment removed

  • I've heard many covers of this song as well as the original live and this is easily one of the best. Definitely maintains a level of haunting urgency. Go Patti, you crazy ol' shewolf.

  • It kind of makes me sad that I've never met anyone my age who even knows who Patti Smith is.

My favorite musician, hands down. Most beautiful woman in the world, my inspiration, and I've met her.

    Live long, Patti Smith! c:

  • @meowziee im 17

  • @meowziee Patti Smith will rule forever!!!

  • @meowziee how old are you? i love her and i'm 17

  • @meowziee VERY humble, charming and giving person.I sat at her feet while she played a tune she had just written for Jerry G. TURN YOUR FRIENDS ON TO HER!! >>>never met anyone my age who even knows who Patti Smith is.<<< They won't regret it!!

  • @meowziee she dont care about critics, she just wants to put the words out. hense the getting the message out over what Curt was trying to say.

  • AMAZING cover, Kurt & co would have been surely honored!!

  • Go find the longer versions of this song...listen from about 3:30 on. That people is the power of this beautiful remake.

  • EXCELENTE

  • i buyed the Horses LP back in 74/75 and i still love to ear her, gr8 cover.

  • STUDENDOUS DARLING STUPENDOUS...

  • This is more like "Smell's like Retirement Home". I'm sorry, i understand the honor in the cover but it loses all it's meaning like this. :/

  • watch ruido rosa - dentro

  • Rimbaud with the Marshall amplifier, Oct.30 MMXI - Hasselt (B), Ethias Arena, Sinner's Day, punk&newWave festival

  • Usually, I don't like covers but this one is different, maybe even bettter than the original song.

  • Awesome video. Awesome cover. Anyone guess who the deathmask is?

  • This was the first Patti Smith song I heard, cos I'm obsessed with Nirvana. Now I worship Patti in every way possible.

  • @yuliancore wow... me cagaste o.O .... debo admitir q lo q escribes tiene mucho sentido - pareces un verdadero fan. me retracto paz...

  • Mmmm tasty, no artificial flavourings and 0% fat.

  • wow...this is actually quite good. wasnt expecting that

  • I know it 's overused but.. Goosebumps.

  • You know, I love nirvana, I'm a Kurt Cobain Want to be, but... This actually let's me understand what Kurt is saying... Patti Smith is now in my book as frikkin awesome.

  • wow

  • @yuliancore Kurt dios del grunge? eso es lo ultimo que kurt quizo ser alguna vez, se nota que no lo conoces en absoluto. Informate un poco

  • Świetna wersja! Baaarrdzo lubię i polecam:)

  • I liked the song, but I hated the part where it ended, at 5:30.

  • I like the album version better. She does a whole extra minute of poetry!

  • she did this in honar of kurt

  • I love Patti Smith but I hate vevo.

  • lol well this cover helps me understand the song better, i can actually HEAR the lyrics now!!

  • together with tori amos this is the best cover of smells like teen spirit,

  • Wow. I think this is really, really interesting and awesome. I'm 16.

  • lol hip hop advertisement

  • @larrlbesnon

..so useful among people who will hear to patti!

  • It's not bad....pleasently surprised.

  • 14 deaf people accidentally clicked the link to this video

  • The Grandmother of Punk covered Nirvana. That's an honour.

  • @persnikity12345 GODmother

  • Comment removed

  • @persnikity12345 you mean the goddess of punk? haha

  • f. Sam Shepard the playwright on banjo, I believe.

  • great

  • une reprise magnifique par l'une des plus grandes artistes qui a su traverser les périodes sans se dénigrer . Merci

  • une reprise magnifique par l'une des plus grandes artistes qui a su traverser les périodes sans se dénigrer . Merci

  • mieux que l'original...largement !

  • this is a great version. Total wind down chill music. *grabs glass of wine*

  • This is a pretty interesting cover . . .

  • @jc0503132 wow you are really very... smart.

  • beautiful cover, i alway love when a great artist covers another great artist

  • I absolutely love Patti's version of this song, its obvious she just wanted to do her own thing, she didn't want to out do Nirvana, she didn't try the same sound, and she wasn't just out to make a ton of money with this, she just wanted to do an awesome cover of an awesome song.

  • I love the cover. Even stupid vevo can't ruin it for me.

  • Indeed Cobain would have been honored. No musician (let alone someone from the punk world) worth his salt would not bow down to Patti Smith.

  • fuck all you fagget haters, patti smith as rocked since the fuckin 70's fuckers.

fuckin have loved patti smith since i was a kid, " rockin roll nigger" from naturla born killers is so fuckin bad ass!

  • Would've been cooler, in my meaningless opinion, if she would have made the chorus heavy and kept the versus how they are now.

  • Wait, isn't partnering with Vevo contradictory to the anti corporate bra burning Patti Smith we all know and love?

  • Comment removed

  • besides that, she's already inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall and Fame in 2007 so, Now I'd say it's time for her to have fun. and I bet she's doing it and doesn't give 2 sh*ts less about anything anyone says lol good or bad. so go suck it

  • she has both the look and the voice of experience. those who complain need to get a hobby because they don't understand true artist's. when you sing a song and convey emotion through it and get the feeling out and actually strike a cord with someone else's emotion you've won. I think she's done that with this. And if you listen to her other song's you can see she's established and wouldn't even have to do someone else's cover, maybe she did it because it was fun to do and made her feel good

  • I love it when covers are better then the original

  • @Blkwolf99

    ....

lets not go over board here...

  • @CCRockit lol i love the original too, i just like the slower softer version Patti Smith does.

  • @CCRockit lol i love the original too, i just like the slower softer version Patti Smith does. Its totaly preference not "this is better then the other one no matter what you" say kinda opionion.

  • amazing

  • ahhaha i love at the end Patti sings "AHANANANA NAHAHAAA NAAAHHHH" to imitate Kurt's "mumbling" xD

  • I laugh that some called Patti Smith "hick spirit" There would be no Nirvana if it wasn't for people like Patti Smith, please do your homework ignorant fools.

  • Fuck vevo?

  • Kurt would be honoured? He covered it himself, but brilliant!

  • raz ...dwa trzy...sławek tu był :) pozdro dla słuchaczyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

  • No. Sorry but this is terrible and is a betrayal of the moody aggession of the original. Artsy fartsy types will say this is a great interpretation, but if we're honest it doesnt even come close to doing the original justice. Far from teen spirit this sounds more like hick spirit.

  • @kmburss

    to each his/her own. I think it's a masterpeice

  • @kmburss Since you want to treat it like a fucking contest, this version is actually more musically talented than Nirvanas version. I can play the original on the guitar, trust me any fool (including you) can do it.

If you want "moody agression" then blow your head off too, THATS mood aggression. Stop bashing artists who have been around over 40 years who continue to make fucking music to inspire people like Kurt who actually DID understand what sounds good. He would love this version, fuck you.

  • Kirt would most def feel honored. Patti Smith was doing rock while he was child after all lol

  • The melody gets sick and twisted as it builds...giving a real deliverance feel to it. A true artist sees through what one person already it, and even wanted, and is able to presented it through another pair of eyes.

Take it or leave it, thats art. Have some imagination. She's an expert.

  • i like the first minute of the video the most. the cat in the first seconds it's really cute.

    the song it's amazing.

  • Oooh <3

  • PETTI SMITH AND NIRVANFUCKINGNA = FUCK YEAHHHHHHH

  • very good

  • "With the light's out is less dangerous" Well it is her version after all

  • I love this version awesome patty

  • love it so much.. thank you it made my life

  • this cover is awesome, and so is Patti i really admire her, and yeah paved the way for waht music is now, so fuck you all who doesnt know shit about rock history

  • as good as catpower version of oasis wonderwall and catpower version of hank williams ramblin man, go puck rock !

  • C'mon, Patti. At least spring for a real Strat, not a Squier!

  • I love this version. It's got so much emotion in it. Patti... You amaze us once again. :)

  • shivers

  • listen my version please, thanks!

  • Awesome. Pure essence. No burnout portrayed here. Mature, accomplished artist, visionary, immortal rocker doing her own, true to Self, interpretation of this song, not frozen in some lifeless blueprint which certainly Cobain himself would not respect. I realize some of this might take age and maybe even a lifetime in the arts to recognize.. so I appreciate anyone younger who can find value in this amazing video and cover. Finally, by the way, libido doesn't die at 25. So, don't worry... ;-)

  • @ctviera love this... Toris version is pretty good too

  • @ctviera cobain died at 27 FYI...heehee

  • @mindofanassassin - I am aware of how old Cobain was when he died. I was not specifically referring to his age of death. Rather, Patti Smith is 64 and is the one singing in this video. I was responding to an earlier post that suggested she was intending to be more ironic about this point than, perhaps, she is... or would need to be. Hope that helps! ;-)

  • @ctviera

team spirit libido doesnt die at 15 .its thanatos who will die at 51 for ever if not ever for given . so don't hurry ;-)

  • @ctviera I think I'm beginning to see the picture, although very blurred and fuzzy, it's there. I feel really inspired by Cobain, Novoselic, Grohl, Smith, all have their own unique story, every line has a big message, so...yeah..I can't say I'm exactly old, 14 next week, thanks for the inspiration though...

  • @MinorGameGuru you're already head and shoulders ahead of most 14 year olds if you even know who patti smith is. I commend you. Wish I hadn't wasted so much time when I was young. Im 28 now...don't waste your youth! :)

  • @ctviera you're right, it dies at 30

  • so awesome!! I love the banjo sound.

  • Doesn't sound right: There aren't enough mumbled and slurred lyrics.

  • 0:01 Let's skip some ads

  • GRAN COVER , GRANDE PATTY..............

  • SO BEAUTIFULL

  • Patti Smith is the Godmother of Grunge, the Mother of Punk. She deserves some respect, so fools better shut their mouths!

  • She forgot the way it goes "Hello, hello, hello, how low, how low, how low". She said "Hello, hello, hello, hello, hello, hello".
