I was just thinking, if the Khutbah is about teaching people to be better Muslims and clear their doubts why not let them decide. Here is my idea: Put up a large piece of paper in the Mosque's lobby and let people write anything they want to know about Islam or what they want a speech on. It should be totally anonymous and people should be able to do it in private. I don't know if this is possible but I feel it would be more constructive? What do you think?

@hich101 sunnah ain't compulsory mate. You can do it if you want to, which is good, but you don't have to; since times change, styles change, meaning you can wear a shirt and jeans if you want to.

Do you know what sunnah is? It is highly recommended to follow sunnah, but it is not compulsory. E.g keeping a beard --> sunnah, highly recommended but not a MUST. If you don't do it, it's not a sin.
Praying 5 times a day, fasting 30days of ramadan --> FARD, you must do it or you will be sinning.
@cssftw100 shaving the beard is haram...there are major hadiths on this issue..any muslim who knows the hadiths well will agree with me..ALLAH says, obey AllaH obey Muhammad sws...
@hich101 Uhh no brother, it's not quite haram to shave your beard. Yes you must obey Allah, yes you must follow the Prophet(pbuh) but if you want to shave, it's not HARAM, as in not permissible. There's many rulings that involve the prophet's words which must be followed (e.g. toilet issues), but you don't have to keep a beard... If you do, then that is absolutely good for you, and inshallah you will receive extra reward.

@ThePiousOne5 - Comparing the bible and the Qur'an in that particular sense is not fair or reasonable, as the Qur'an is a series of suras revealed to a single Prophet, whereas the Bible is many books, some the revealed works of a Prophet (a.e. the Torah) whereas much of it is, in actuality, the hadith of Jesus (which you will note most hadiths don't begin with basmala anyway)

If "you wont hear that at jummah" I think it would be wondereful if you could make a short video about the topics you mentioned, if you have time of course. The way you present your videos is brilliant, it keeps the audiences attention by keeping it interesting(to watch but not so much that it distracts from the subject/point of the video. so thankyou for providing us with some very rare educational entertainment that will hopefully briing me to a point where i can call you my brother (in islam)
I have, without fail, shed a tear on every jumma because of the message from my Imam. He makes me reflect on my self, brings me closer to Allah SWT and Prophet Muhammad pbuh.
lol i think it depends on the musjid as well as a lot of muslim people don't know much about islam so i think the person who leads the jummah should teach however much they know because many parents have stopped teaching their children many important values in islam
asalam alikoum, it's not always true i think that many topics khatibs talk about are interesting and reflect important subjects of islam those which we need to remind and if people sleep it is perhaps most of the time their faut, we just have to be concentrated in that way we'll learn a lot of things... for current subjects there are many other ways to learn what we still don't know such as books for instance ... You have great degree of curiosity and perhaps little more effort to search for the right Scholars would help to hear the Khutbah that has kept this Muslim faith pure as it was 1400 years ago compare to any other religion. This relgion has spread from coast to coast acorss Asia, Arab, Africa and Central Asia by the same traditional scholars. If Khutabs and Islamic styles were that boring perhaps this would not have been case rather critics would be right that Islam spread through Sword.
Baba Ali, You were absolutely right Jumah need to reflect the current issues of society. However I am not sure which Mosque you go to, as the ones I have seen in my 38 years I have seen excellent scholars who give Khutba as per the advice and tradition of Prohpet PBU.
The Jumma Khutbas by the prophet Muhammed (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) were directly from the Quran. So the Quran has all what we need. Since we ALL believe in the Quran then it would not offend anyone. The Quran has ALL the topics and since it's by almighty ALLAH it's the best.

so people r saying how dare we mock the local khatibs? i tell u y because mst of them r on the minbar only because they r old or because they r of the same nationality of the guys that run the mosque. when adressing the ummah we should speak a language that all undestand not laguage that only old people undestand. soon all the old people will die n the ummah will be left in ignorance due to the fact we didnt learn nothing since it was all we hear in jummah was in a landuage we dont undestand.

Do you know what sunnah is? It is highly recommended to follow sunnah, but it is not compulsory. E.g keeping a beard --> sunnah, highly recommended but not a MUST. If you don't do it, it's not a sin.
Praying 5 times a day, fasting 30days of ramadan --> FARD, you must do it or you will be sinning.

@hich101 Uhh no brother, it's not quite haram to shave your beard. Yes you must obey Allah, yes you must follow the Prophet(pbuh) but if you want to shave, it's not HARAM, as in not permissible. There's many rulings that involve the prophet's words which must be followed (e.g. toilet issues), but you don't have to keep a beard... If you do, then that is absolutely good for you, and inshallah you will receive extra reward.

Jazak Allah Khairan. I couldn't agree with you more. It is extremely sad that this is really happening. There was a time were Muslims use to get an increase in knowledge and taqwa from attending Jummah but now people tend to do it out of habit only.
We do need to step up to the plate and take charge by reminding the leaders at our masajids.
May Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'alla help us impact our communities with great knowledge.

While I think that's clear, to answer your question from a jurisprudence point of view most schools view it as haraam, some view it as makruh. Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Amin feels it is halal in a couple specific circumstances (such as to prevent one's self from committing adultery).

@ThePiousOne5 - Comparing the bible and the Qur'an in that particular sense is not fair or reasonable, as the Qur'an is a series of suras revealed to a single Prophet, whereas the Bible is many books, some the revealed works of a Prophet (a.e. the Torah) whereas much of it is, in actuality, the hadith of Jesus (which you will note most hadiths don't begin with basmala anyway)

asalam alikoum, it's not always true i think that many topics khatibs talk about are interesting and reflect important subjects of islam those which we need to remind and if people sleep it is perhaps most of the time their faut, we just have to be concentrated in that way we'll learn a lot of things... for current subjects there are many other ways to learn what we still don't know such as books for instance ... You have great degree of curiosity and perhaps little more effort to search for the right Scholars would help to hear the Khutbah that has kept this Muslim faith pure as it was 1400 years ago compare to any other religion. This relgion has spread from coast to coast acorss Asia, Arab, Africa and Central Asia by the same traditional scholars. If Khutabs and Islamic styles were that boring perhaps this would not have been case rather critics would be right that Islam spread through Sword.
