Was going down "MEMORY LANE" today and some how came across all this stuff about Elan in Maine. I was in the state house, I dont remember the number, maybe 7. Anyway it felt so good to feel validated by others posts, I got out of there 1980, I had been there for 2 years They just send you on your way, no skills, no plans period.That place was a holy horror. I was put through all that others have including handcuffed to a chair for two weeks.This really made me cry today, the memories r horrible.

I was there 76-79. It was bizarre, but it worked. We really did run the place ourselves for the most part. There was some fucked up shit, but nothing that every amounted to anything. A lot of humiliation. What I did not like was the Guilt. I never graduated. All 5 resident directors were former drug addicts, all graduates themselves of the Elan program, and none possessed a college degree or had any prior experience in child care. 1 resident director who was in charge of a house where seven of the Illinois residents lived told the team that he had a history of assaultive behavior toward females. His 3rd assault resulted in serious injury to the woman...the reason for his admission to Elan.

You guys need to get in touch with the folks who were at Straight, Inc. and it's spin-off programs. Several of the programs' survivors have filed a class action lawsuit because of the abuse they suffered, a few have sued the programs individually and won millions of dollars (especially survivors of KIDS of North Jersey). When a staff member entered the room, he told them to stop immediately. They only rec'd approval from State of maine to keep operating as a special purpose school as long as they stopped the student restraints by students. I has stopped cleaning it, and that was when the staff determined that I had to be restrained and dragged to "the corner", isolation in a room to the point when one barely feels human. I tried to fight back, as any normal person would do when one is touched and forcefully grabbed without consent. Instead of just bringing me to the corner, the staff had other students hold me up, my hands and feet restrained, as other students were forced to scream and degrade me.

I say forced, because regretfully I have also done the same to other students, and I know that if they refused to participate in this abominable event they too would have been punished. The only way to survive in this setting was to shut down emotionally. This memory haunts me to current day.
