Half the people who watched the game on TV didn't even catch the comment. The game was only broadcast locally, not nationally. And you want me to believe that this so-called relative of Baker's somehow heard it and decided the best place to complain to was Yahoo (which had nothing to do with it).
Searched all over Yahoo and couldn't find a single reference to any relative of Baker's being offended. The closest I could find was some guy saying that his Grandfather knew Baker and that because his now-dead Grandfather claimed he knew him, he found it offensive.
That's completely false. FSN employs the TV pbp team and the Pens have no say so in who they choose. The Pens pay the radio pbp guys and have all the say so in who they are. The Pens would have kept Lange on the TV side if they had any say in it at all.
Who he gets his paycheck from is irrelevant. It's not like he's a beat writer covering the Pens...the guy is listed on their website. He's considered a member of the organization. Therefore, anything he does or says in the booth reflects on the organization as a whole.
If they don't pay him, he doesn't work for them nor could they fire him if they wanted to.
They also list the radio station that carries the games on their website. So then used your flawed logic, everything said by any radio personality on WXDX reflects on the Pens organization as a whole.

They were laughing at inappropriateness of the comment because often things that are inappropriate are very funny. That was a bit of black humor and I can see how it could offend some, but I would say people have to learn living with this sort of thing.
However, since it comes from Steigerwald, whom I consider the more boring announcer in the NHL, I'm gonna say that IT WAS TRULY INSENSITIVE AND UTTERLY UNACCEPTABLE.
But if Mike Lange had said the same thing, that would have been cleverly irreverent and very amusing.

I actually do not believe that at all.
Half the people who watched the game on TV didn't even catch the comment. The game was only broadcast locally, not nationally. And you want me to believe that this so-called relative of Baker's somehow heard it and decided the best place to complain to was Yahoo (which had nothing to do with it).

That's completely false. FSN employs the TV pbp team and the Pens have no say so in who they choose. The Pens pay the radio pbp guys and have all the say so in who they are. The Pens would have kept Lange on the TV side if they had any say in it at all.

Who he gets his paycheck from is irrelevant. It's not like he's a beat writer covering the Pens...the guy is listed on their website. He's considered a member of the organization. Therefore, anything he does or says in the booth reflects on the organization as a whole.

Newspaper writers are the guys that just "get media passes". Dave Molinari isn't listed anywhere on that page because he just covers the Pens for the Post-Gazette. Also, the PG doesn't pay the Penguins for the rights to write about their games like FSN does.

It would have been different if he meant it in a harmful way. But he didn't. It was just a spontaneous remark that slipped out of his mouth. They were laughing at inappropriateness of the comment because often things that are inappropriate are very funny. You have to consider the intent of the comment, and there is no way that he meant it to be harmful. Get a sense of humor and take it for what it is!
