I'm on Youtube trying to find a tutorial for combat in this game because I only got one little text blurb about how to fight and it didn't work. So I've been just going through the game holding the mouse button down on enemies until they die. Boring as hell, and frustrating. I'm told there's a trick to it. But the FUCK do I have to look it up outside the game to figure it out? That definitely counts as a fail. It's non-intuitive (fail!) and the in-game tutorial sucks (double fail).
WTF I never played this one, but started playing The Witcher 2 since two days ago but this game seems so much cooler than Witcher 2. Geralt is more of a badass in Witcher 1 awesome combat!
@Rafahil Although the moves in the Witcher 1 is better than the 2nd, the enemies can't move as long as you can chain up your attacks. I played the 1st one on hard mode and it felt like i was playing on normal. So I can imagine the lower difficulties are much easier.
There are three types of attacks; Strong, fast, and group attacks. Strong is for tanks, fast is for more agile ones, and group if for group. Group is fun but overpowered as hell since it can dispatch tons of enemies at once.
@Rafahil Plus, in the Witcher 2, if your skill is above average, you can bust out your original combos. For instance, you can spam fast attacks for a while and finish the combo with strong downward slash. The 1st game has predetermined set of combos, which you can't alter. Gerald has to start with the weakest attack, and click at the right moments to proceed to next ones. It feels really repetative especially when you are up against bosses and other enemies with high health.
Could someone help me? Im in the end of chapter 2 and I just lost my silver sword. It just dissapeared from my inventory. Does anyone knows how to fix this bug or can I forge a new silver sword??
i dont understand the combat system really , i really like the story and wish i could play but i get to the beast fight and he does that stun and then all the barghests attack me and i die before i can do anything, i give up, coming from personal experince alone this game is pretty poorly designed and although the world is great it is really hard to get immeresed due to the bad facial animation, weird dialogue and harsh fade to cutscene + shit combat (looks cool but shit)
@MegamaXX500 a direct comparison really isn't fair because while the two share a lot of outward similarities, they play very differently. having said that, i personally found DAO's combat to be more engaging and fun than the witcher's. not that the witcher's combat is *bad*, i just prefer DAO's. your mileage may vary.
i definitely prefer witcher 2's combat over DAO's, though. just make sure it's on normal or above, easy requires no strategy or skill and gets boring p. quick.
@StudioHizu nah it doesnt. witcher 2 is a really good game, and im not far enough through it yet to say if its better, but I definately wouldnt say it 'beats the shit' out of the first one. On atmosphere alone, id say the first one has the edge.
@shivnz No, No it doesnt. Witcher 2's combat, graphics, story and setting is far superior to the first. The only thing the first witcher has over the second is the character. Geralt is more of a witcher in the first game.
Good work mate. I've really liked your video. Just how you combined combat elements with ards. By the way, soundtrack fits very well. Could I ask for music title?

fighting is so fucking gay, consists of clicking a guy and keep clicking when your sword is flaming...
I pre ordered witcher 2 without playing the first one. If the second adopts the same combat system I'm cancelling my pre order. RPG's should be click to swing, not target then timing to swing.
@leaf16nut perhaps try a bioware rpg like da2. those are really easy and require no skill or effort. just press a button and something awesome happens.
So witcher requires skill... hahaha, you still click the mouse button over and over. You just have to click when prompted, leaving you watching your cursor instead of how the enemies are attacking, when to dodge and which move to do... If anything that makes the game require less skill, as it tells you exactly when to attack.
Thank god I only payed 5 bucks on steam at the time, cause this game is fucking shit.
@leaf16nut just because you cant keep track of more than one thing at a time, doesnt mean the rest of us cant. i dont think anyone else had any trouble managing style switches, timing, or enemy awareness all at the same time... i suppose spamming mouse clicks to attack takes more skill? or just the rpgs where you click once and let the game autokill the target for you? I never said witcher required skill, only that the kind of rpg mechanics you want (one click and forget) require less.
You misread the kind of RPG i want then... I want to click my mouse for every attack, have to jump and dodge to get out of the way. Much like gothic, other than gothic 4 wasnt the best game.
@shivnz Not to jump into this, even though I am, I think he is more interested in a game where there is actually timing to the attacks and dodges. Something more action oriented like Enclave was but with RPG elements. I have to admit I was a little disappointed with lock on attacks in this game myself. I would prefer it had taken more skill to aim your shots with the sword rather than just the timing of the strikes.
My point exactly... the witcher 1 had shitty combat, it made the game feel slow and unreal... You just get prompted when to attack and clicked your mouse...
id much rather have to watch my enemy, jump, dodge and block attacks... rather than getting prompted when to attack.
@shivnz ok being nine monthes old no one will probibly give this any heed but I want to throw in my two cents, 1. da2 makeing things awsom at the pres of a button is a GOOD thing if fights are going to be about presing a button a lot the event onfoldeng should be AWESOME.
@leaf16nut They should have made it turn based under the hood. Any skill you get in Witcher is completely irrelevant compared to your mouse -clicking ability. If you just left click really fast on an enemy, say 3-5 times a second, you see both you and your opponent in some bizarre animation stun, and then your opponent dies (look at the amount of dmg you see floating up when you do this). If they had just stuck with the original D&D game mechanics, it would have been an amazing game.
Combat system and the interface both turn me off of the first witcher. I totally agree, though...
Other than Arcania gothic 4 sucked, its systems made it a fun game to play, having to dodge/roll out of the way, having to watch what your opponent does rather than waiting for a mouse bbutton to appear on the screen.
I think witcher 2 will be different, from what I've seen they've redone the combat system, but i'm waiting to buy it to ake sure they did a good revamp...
@leaf16nut I've finished many rpgs, ofcourse some games like Risen have more potential combat system. But... Witcher has its own style and I like it. Its better than gothic 3, where u can kill 10-15 enemies with lmb spam....
@leaf16nut I've finished many rpgs. Ofcourse games like Risen or gothic 2 have more potential combat system. But The Witcher has its own style and I like it. Its not a cheap copy of something....
Only thing I hated about the witcher, combat was boring as hell. Combo-ing wasn't much like a combo as much as it was ''doing the same attack really fast''

@shivnz The way I see it, the Humans were the "evil" ones because bigotry and unfounded racism is a clear-cut definition of an evil regime, and the Scoiatel are merely freedom fighters. Similarly, humans often hate the Witchers, though it's rare for humans to have the nerve to wear it on their sleeves. Granted I've never beaten the game, but still, I'd rather side with the oppressed than the oppressors personally.
@Foxxie0kun as they say, one mans freedom fighter is another mans terrorist - they are quire happy to murder entire human villages filled with innocent civilians because they hate humans as much as humans hate them... and if you side with them (in the mean time i did do my second playthrough supporting them), you see them do some utterly evil things... the key to the witcher 'world' is that nothing is clear cut, and they are no better than the humans - they are just as racist and hateful..
@shivnz And that's why I love the Witcher series (The games AND The books), because there are so many morally gray areas where you could have the best intentions of helping the elves gain equality with humanity, and yet the Elves see to it that their reputation as violent savages or whatnot is preserved by an act of cruelty where human men, women, and children are butchered. I love gray morality in games rather than clear cut goody two shoes or evil kitten chopper. Lesser of two evils type stuff
@shivnz you are right. This is exactly what the witcher is about. It's a world full of mysteries and treacheries, and there isn't "good" or "bad", just decisions and consequences.
the large sword is towards the end, yes, its from pretty late in the game. As soon as the remastered version gets released, im going to play this the game through again on the hard difficulty setting, this time taking the slightly more 'evil' route by helping the elves :D
