Cool history lesson, but there are numerous spelling errors and inconsistent/sloppy editing. You should have reviewed this more closely before posting.
I have read every DUNE book ever written! No,Brian Herbert cant write like his father, but i have to say i have enjoyed all the DUNE books that he and Kevin J.Anderson have written together. I will keep reading them because i dont want the story to end! Give them a read, and i think you will like them as well.
Personally havent read any post (Frank) Herbert Dune stuff and more than likely never will, but the bottom line is, The story wasnt meant to end with Chapterhouse and Herbert would have atleast written one more novel had it not been for his death...
I think we all agree that new books written by his son and dudehey are NOT up to par with Franks originals but at least they keep the story going. Maybe someday someone better will keep it going.
I've read only Dune and find the detailed mythology absolutely fascinating. I enjoyed the 1984 film; the 2000 miniseries did not hold my attention. I look forward to seeing a true and honest film representation of the original trilogy with the effects technology now available. It would be fantastic. So long as no "artistic liberties" are taken during production that is.
Ok let's just pretend that all the trash from the post-Frank Herbert era never was written. It's easy. The books are just horrible, and anyone who has tried to wade through one knows what I am talking about. But the wonderful future history that Frank created answered some interesting questions: could a galactic human society function without thinking machines? Could military technology evolve to the point that atomic weapons became unusable and edged weapons useful, and under what conditions?
@SIZZLEBIZZLE1982 well, in the universe of dune, our society as we know it existed long long ago, so a direct reference to the person of Samuel Butler was entirely possible. I assume you know who was Samuel Butler and his work. In strict science fiction like Frank Herbert, historical references of this kind are welcome. Don't you think?... I can't say much more since I have not finished reading the entire novel yet.
@SpiritLine I was not familiar with Samuel Butler honestly. I appreciate the insight into the matter. If you are referring to not finishing the original Dune, finish ASAP! There are wonderful books in the Dune sage. My personal favorite is Heretics of Dune.
ALL subsequent Dune Novels (Legends Of Dune, The "House" novels, "Paul Of Dune", "Dune 7" (Hunters and Sandworms of Dune and, the forthcoming "Schools" Novels (presumably covering the Bene Gesserit, Mentats and, The Guild (or maybe the Suks)) were written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson (an outstanding writer in his own right and NOT (as some would say) a "writer for rent") and based upon detailed notes and outlines compiled by Frank Herbert before his death in 1986.
I like the new books as well as the originals. But in different ways: Frank is more indepth and realistic, whilst Kevin & Brian are easier and more exciting reads.
Favourite characters are Leto II and Erasmus. Oh, and Doctor Yueh.
Probably. The books that weren't written by Frank Herbert have none of the depth and quality of his works. The originals combine politics, philosophy, spirituality, economics, ecology, religion, and intrigue into one incredible story. The newer books merely play off of what the old ones established. They try to add more where they should back off (giving the precursors to the Bene Gesserit goofy psychic powers for instance).
frank herbert tansformed WW1 near east history into science fiction. the centre of the conflict: iraqi's mossul and its petroleum. paul atreidis is lawrence of arabia... war for spice is war for oil.
This story is a rape on the original dune storyline. Made by a son of Frank Herbert and a writer-to-rent is the worst thing that could happen to dune series.
I've read these novels its time to make a sequel out of these books they will take dune to another level as it already has in my mind. THE SPICE MUST FLOW
Have you read the prequels? some fans hate them. Do you believe these books influenced many films over the years such as Star Wars, The Matrix, Avatar, Star Trek films, Dark City, The Fifth Element, Stargate, Serenity, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind etc.?
@Johnlindsey289YES, the chronicles of riddick is the best example showing salusa secondus in exact detail as described in the machine crusade BUT AS HELION PRIME. I LOVE DUNE! SUCH A ELEGANT STORY OF A TIME WE KNOW NOTHING OF THE OLD imperialist governance AND NEW MERGE AS A SINGLE ENTITY. HE WHO CONTROLS THE SPICE CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE!
Crusade and Jihad against the Robots? Bring back the Tetonic order! LOL (it is still here)
So Christianity and Islam is still around thousands of years from now? I big time doubt that any religion today will still be around 3000 to 5000+ years from now. I am seen so many unbelievers is not even funny, much more so with Women. But then again Christianity was aground 2000+ years and Islam 1600+ years or so. I guess they can be around another 2000 years.
@xxTeutonicKnightxx= There will always be believers as long as humanity lives. As long as someone looks up to the sky, and wonders if there is a greater power watching over us, Mankind will still believe in God.
The books explain that, somewhere down the line, the major religions are collected and blended together into a single overarching set of beliefs. Some people follow only parts of those beliefs (Navachristianity, Zen-Sunni, etc), but they still belong to the greater religion.
The two biggest exceptions are the Bene Tleilax (who practice a modified Islamic tradition emphasizing genetics) and Jews (who have gone into hiding and are thought not to exist anymore).
@Grumm999 The Bene Tleilax follow what could be best described as more of a form of "Fundamentalist" Islam while the Zen-Sunni and Zen-Shiites are, pretty much, an amalgamation of Buddhism and Islam that came to be known as "Buddhislam"
@Defgunt You would think Erath will be the capital of Mankind? But then again it is like saying today you would think that Europe would still be the capital of t he new world. I would agree with Dune; Earth will be left behind and left in the past but not forgotten…
