A spiral is quite essential, momentum from the throw is transfered more efficiently through a spiral motion other than a "wobbling" "tail spin" motion. The tail motion disperses the energy outward not towards its target wasting the enerygy from the throw but yet also creates drag and slight wind resistance opposed to the spiraled throw. Why do you think the grooves of a barrel are spun; so the bullet and can spiral.
