I say this with respect: I liked your sound alot. I didn't really dig the mushy vibrato. Your overall sound was btw but respectfully I thought a wee bit too btw at times. All and all, very nice indeed.
very impressive, i think it sounded great. I think it is fine to use slide vibrato for this piece, but you need to work on your slide vibrato. Try to make it sound as natural as possible.
Molto bravo... se ti posso da un modesto consiglio ma è solo un opinine poco meno aggressivo negli attacchi ;) se ti va passa e lascia un commento da me ... ciauu:)
You're a good player, but the slide-vibrato is killing your performance. And it's al little too loud. Dflat is too flat. You have a reasonably nice tone, and a safe pitch, though. Keep it up!
@Spdres check out the video of Joe Alessi playing the excerpt. He uses slide vibrato on the high d flat. Jaw vibrato can be pretty tricky in the high register.
did he ask for your critique? don't you have anything better to do than beat up a trombonist?
who the hell are you to be handing out precise advise about tone, slide position, tonguing and etcetera...
you're all little I know betters. get off your ass and post your own video. handing out advice on how to play on a youtube video is an exercise in self importance.
ya ya ya, i'm doing the same thing but you are out of control egomaniacs!
if he can play that well, he knows his weakness's.
by posting on youtube you have to expect comments good AND bad. you can't say, "look at me! BUT DON'T SAY ANY MEAN THINGS OR I WILL BE MAD" its the way youtube works. good performance.
Glissandi or not is not the point. What really really bugs me: Never, never never ever do a slide vibrato if the composer doesn't say so. It is terrible. Also, there isn't a triple fortissimo in the lower part, not that I could remember. Heights is good if you can manage to start much smoother. All in all, not bad.
There was a recording of the Paris Conservatory Orchestra conducted by Ravael himself which I have heard years ago. On that recording Ravel gave the trombonist the liberty to add glisses that are not in the score. If anybody here has access to the Edward Johnson music library of the University of Toronto Faculty of Music you should check and see if the record is still there.
listen listen listen... that's the key factor... sorry to write that, but this performance is NOT good. Just listen to the world's greatest principal trombonists how to play this solo in style. If you have ears everything's gonna be alright..
Ya... there is no way you can do rubato in this... and you articulations cannot vary... everything should be legato, no random staccatos... low notes were out of tune, too... watch the alessi video... or listen to the ralph sauer excerpt cd...
Its amazzing that you can hit those high notes and your probably better than me. However, i can't help but comment on how insanely disgustingly overdone the glissando's are
the good thing is your high register is fairly clear and you can play all the notes. that's step one. step two is to make the music sound well...musical. for the notes at the beginning of phrases try to do air attacks instead of tongue attacks...with practice and getting used to it that will take the edge off the front of the notes. the slide vibrato is also quite overdone...think mellow. this whole solo is supposed to be smooth effortless and flowing...think of yourself floating when you
play..it sounds cliche but it works. also..i know you're by yourself and trying to show off, but if you have any aspirations to get anywhere with your playing, you need to learn how to play in time and in tune. your 5th is very flat in general. sorry for going on like this..just though i'd give my two cents.
Great, you've learned all the notes now make it sound good. Your opening Bb sounds forced. I think you are so tense if you missed it you woulda had a stroke. The first glissando was seriously over emphasized and the slide vibrato you used on the E at the end of the phrase was far too wide. Take a bigger, more relaxed breath to start and DON'T hold it in at all before you play. Remember, breath-play! Also, use jaw or air vibrato, not slide. You can also back off the sound, it will come out
You may want to practice with a metronome. It's a solo, so there's room for vibrato, but you still need to stick with the overall beat of the orchestra.
Also, your vibrato and your overall tone should be much more subtle. You've got a good tone for a marching band, but it's out of place in Ravel.
On the positive side, your high range is clear and fairly consistent, which is what usually kills people who play Boléro, so well done on that.

real trombonists dont move the slide for vibrato.
