Fascinating. Rio Grande Southern is one of my favorite railways. There's a lot of surviving rolling stock, so why couldn't they attempt to reopen the line from Durango to Telluride? The whole line would be way too long for a tourist railway, but Rico to Telluride would be fine, and it's the most scenic part of the RGS.
The water tower was filled with a pipe that was layed about 1 mile upstream in Marshall creek. The natural fall of the river grade and the pressure from the pipe being layed upstream forced the water into the tower. The pipe has a break in it right where the main road into sargents is and bubbles up into the corner of the street like an artisan spring
Please look. I would really love to see our old cabin. We built a house that is connected to a 16x20 foot log cabin that used to be one of 12 saloons (I believe) in that little town. I would really love to see it before the "new" buildings were constructed. It is really cool to see the old coal shoot in the photos. I only saw the remains of it until the last parts were burned down in the late 70's.
I really am not sure either, but the metal 8 mm film can has in pencil been marked
"Salida 1952" "D and RGW" "Marshall pass" "Shirley East side" "Sargents" "West side". This is the only information I have to go on. The film may have been misplaced in another can or something. It will be interesting to see what it really is as I would like to know too. If it really is not correct, I will change the description.
@ mesaman3000, After checking, it may very well be that the video section showing the D and RG 464 is really the on the RGS and not the D and RGW @ Marshall pass. I think just the last part showing the two engines with coal cars is at Sargents Colorado.
Some of these 8 mm films have been spliced together in several places so it could be anything. If someone can confirm this, I will change the whole description to reflect the new information. Thanks.
I grew up in that town, It is Sargents Colorado which is 32 miles east of Gunnison. It is at the foot of Monarch pass on state highway 50 and Marshall pass (where the train went over). Ma. Sargents used to be called Mear's Junction named after Otto Mears, Later it was named after Joseph Sargent.
@elkman1965 Thanks for the information. I have changed the description. If I find any pictures of Sargents or Marshall pass, I will post them on a new video. Everything is in a big pile of slides and 8 MM and hard to figure out what is what. Thanks TT.
Not trying to argue, and I am in no way certain...But 3 clues lead me to believe its the RGS. first scene is RGS goose #3, caboose at the end of this first train is RGS 0400, and the trestle is built to 100% RGS practices. Plus I have matched up pictures of Rico to the town in your video. Also, the RGS borrowed RGW motive power and rolling stock all throughout and mostly in the final years of operations.
I Just finished watching all 9 videos you have uploaded, absolutely beautiful. One thing, the beginning of this video was shot on the RGS, up until about 1 minute 40 seconds, and I believe it ends in Rico.
This was a treat for me as I am building a RGS G scale layout in my garden and there are lots of details here !

Again, I dont mean to argue, and if I am wrong, I am sorry, it just seems to be more facts leading to the RGS.

I grew up in Sargents. The film taken in sargents was taken from what is now my front yard. Do you have any other Sargents footage?
