I like how Lynch mixes the surrealist horror of the scene with the real-life horror of seeing your girlfriend getting slightly drunk at the arm of a douchebag whose smile inspires you nothing but mistrust.
I think the Mystery Man is the representation on Fred's shadow self. Fred's home is the representation of his mind, his identity. Immaculate and secure...until it's slowly infiltrated by his dark side. The entity possesses him to kill his own wife. Later on discovering the truth and collapsing the psychic fugue he willingly accepts his shadow a second time to take retribution on Mr. Eddy.
One of my favorite movies. I think it's Lynch's best--even though I admit to only being able to grasp some of what it all might mean. I grew up watching Robert Blake as ''Baretta,'' not really knowing how talented he really is. Painted face guy is unsettling, kind of funny, but not rip-roaring funny. Hardly. One guy becomes another. Or does he really? Never liked ''Twin Peaks.'' Seemed pretentious and tiresome. A better balance here between reality and illusion. A breakdown?
@ullswater6 its barry adamson, something wicked this way comes watch?v=X7MyOvHmkO8&feature=related, its also on the lost highway album which was produced by trent reznor of nine inch nails, its a brilliant album, one of my fav soundtracks of all time.
I got pulled into this big time. How did I miss this movie? Thanks for the upload. I have no idea where it's going. It's creepy but that music is slamming to me!

I love the way Lynch throws stuff out, and literal minded people jump through hoops trying to "interprete" what he's "trying to say".
