inventor does not have the the liability a registered architect has. designing shoelaces are not going to put people's lives to peril. your notion of architect is very ayn rand. but it is important to hold on to the extinct beliefs in order to sell the mystique of the profession.
@howtoarchitect Quiet a list u have there Mr Patt, thank you, if i make it out of architecture school alive , expect an invitation to my graduation ;)
Doug, you are very inspiring. The way you speak is captivating. Keeps my attention. I showed this video to two others and they agreed. I hope you are teaching at a university. We NEED professors that can get there ideas across as you do. Thank you.
i want to be an architect.. drawing structures and bring them real amaze me,but im a little worried coz not good in math... but i truly want to learn.
I don't think I'm going to be an architect, at least not a building (or "material thing") architect, nevertheless all the things You say are very useful in organizing the understanding of creative process. You explain it in few, simple words and pay attention to semantics. With addition to all the explicit lists of things. I wish everyone taught like this.
I think in a broad sense, everyone who designs any kind of innovation (material or not; e.g. social) could be called an "architect".
The difference is one primarily designs houses, the other objects/products. Regardless, the point is that the architect's job is very much like an inventors. That said, an invention is a new process or device - something with unique utility. Anyone can be an inventor - including industrial designers. I meet people all the time who have great ideas. The huge challenge, as you will see in the series, is taking that idea to market. That's where the rubber meets the road.
Anyone can be an inventor. Right. But Industrial Designers are more then that as you probably know. Your comment made it seem like that's not the case. Well anyway both professions lie close to each other, as history shows, many designers were also architects and vise versa. Love your series.
Hi Doug, first of all your videos are great. and I love watching them.
I would like to ask you a question or favor perhaps. What do you think of Drafters? do you think they are under rated career? The name it self is under rated they should call it Architect Assistant of something more professional than drafter. And can a drafter for so many years can be a RA without a Bachelors? thank you in advance. God bless and more success! ^_^
You're exactly right. Take Wright (as a very generalized figure) for instance, he, as an inventor, invented a style (Organic Architecture). Along with his theory, Wright furthered his inventions to allow for a more outstanding aesthetic and practical usage in furniture, lighting, and building materials. Overall, his inventions were his designs. i.e. his cement modular designs and his home and studio in Oak Park. Great clips. As a trained historian and a architectural enthusiast, great job.
thats why in my school architecture and industrial design are in the same faculty. They have some subjects in commmon but industrial see more specialized subjects like glass shop, wood shop, ceramic shop, metal shop and some other like marketing, budgeting, publicity, and other stuff
Yep. Architecture is inventing, and the process definitely has applications outside of building design. Lots of architects have patents on everything from tea carts, Alto; to limb splints, Eames; and a car, Fuller. The list is endless. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the series.
Thanks very much for your video's man! As a prospective Art/architecture student, I find them very encouraging and informative when it seems a lot of my peers disagree with my chosen career. Thankyou again!!
are there boundaries between architecture and industrial design?

so sir doug, what is the difference between an architect and an industrial designer if they both invent anything?

Nice Video, but too much talk, little work.
I am an architect myself and in my opinion your videos showing your work in progress were much more explanatory and inspirational than this one.
Other from that, you are doing an excellent work; your videos inspire young architects or even people who wan to connect to an architects work.
Best regards from Greece
