if you watch the entire thing, it almost makes you cry because once china was a socialist wonderland before dengxiaoping gave up the glorious ideal of communism for imperialist capitalism
Stop arguing about America vs. China. They aren't very different from each other. Both suffer an un-democratic government and the evils of unregulated capitalism.
People say that this film is propaganda, but I don't think so, because I studied about the Chinese Revolution at school and it says exactly what is said at this film. Btw, I'm not from a socialist country, I'm from Brazil, a capitalist country, I studied in a private school during the times of Fernando Henrique Cardoso, aligned with Washington and with Clinton and Bush policies.
So, you can't say that I studied history thru "communist propaganda".
@Corvusdotensis: I wish you understood how laughable it is that you sight "Clinton" policies as somehow being against the PRC. Clinton was $10 whore for Beijing. One of the biggest scandals of his administration was all the money the PRC gov't put into the Clinton political campaigns.
In 1964 (when this movie was made) the PRC had just completed the Great Leap Forward, which is commonly believed to have killed (mostly by starvation) about 40 million people. Shortly after this film Mao began..
@VictorLepanto: ...The Cultural Revolution, which killed a couple million more. Especially targetted in the Cultural Revolution were artist cultural types the performers in this movie. I was thinking as I watched this, how many of the performers here died a horrible violent death shortly after this performance? Ever hear of the PRC's own system of GULAG slave labor camps called Lao Gai?
Man, don't waste your time with conspiracy theories! That was never proofed. However, it was proofed that he had sexual relations with M. Lewinsky and lied before the country.
On the Great Leap Foward, there are no proofs of such claims, only propaganda. US killed millions of people during it's formation. So, don't come with this nonsense, because only retards can believe that more people died in GLF than WWII.
@Corvusdotensis: You're nearly perfect in your ignorance. Such is the nature of a propagandist education. Not only is your head NOT filled w/ real information, it has been rendered immune to hearing the truth. 40 million dead under Mao is the low ball number. Some go as far as 70 million. You need to learn to think in terms of facts & not propagandist's ideological catagories. About 60 milloin died all of WWII, 20 million in China.
Yeah, 40, 70 million, 100 million, the numbers always change according to the ignorance and hatress against China and Communism, then you just wake up.
The funny thing at such ignorants is how people without any study, statistics or serious research can defend such foolishness with conviction, as if he/she was a PhD or better saying, God itself, fulfilled with all the science to be absolutely right about something.
@Corvusdotensis: There are numerous histories of WWII, there are numerous histories of the endless butcheries of the Maoist tyranny. The numbers are fairly consistant & the scholars have established a consensus. Including both Asia & European theaters, about 70 milloin died in WWII. Nearly 20 million died in China. On Mao; some people go as high as 70 million dead under his rule. Most low numbers hover around 40 million. Mao was one of the world's greatest disasters.
There are numerous stories of ppl who saw ghosts, that does not mean that they exist. What can be affirmed without proofs may be discharged without proofs.
The only greatest disasters of world is called United States of America, after Hitler, it's the only champion in mass murders, all of them documented, taped and even praised by its government, Lybia, Sudan, former Iugoslavia, Guatemala, Filipines, Cuba, Iraq... without counting its numerous supports to bloody tyrants.
US is one of the champions of slaughtering of its own population. Of course people died in Chinese Revolution, it was a revolution, as many people died during American Independence struggle, but today in China, you find the Han, you find artists, singers, communists, anticommunists... differently to America, which killed most of its own native population, today in America it's rare to see an indian, they were nearly 100% eliminated.

It should be noted that there was a five minute overture of the "Internationale" (reprised in the finale) which then opens over a prologue (text) prior to this sequence... Is there a version available with the english subs ?
All that "progress" harvested not one grain of rice, produced not one ingot of steel, created not one educated scientist capable of analytical research, built no houses nor roads, cured not one person of any disease, nor created even one lasting edifice in tangible service to the people.
Learn from farmers, their real needs and requirements for the soil to yield its treasures. Learn from steel mills, factories, spinning mills, what is really needed to produce tangible goods for the people!
Thanks Richien for uploading this video.I cried when i saw this video.Made me proud to be chinese and never shame for it.Mao Zedong made China from Capitalism to Communist ,because we were tired to be a slaved country,a dependency to Britains,Japanese and more. Mao Zedong did right.I'm proud to knowing my grandfather and his parents were in Mao Zedong side and was joined 'The long March'. Once again,Thanks for uploading this video :')
I think that Mao originally started with the right idea. Liberating the Chinese people and improving the standard of living. However, his bad decision making, paranoia of others betraying him, and setting himself as something of a god; are why I dislike him. Deng Xiaopping later fixed many of Mao's mistakes, but markets conflict with communist theory and opening up has led to many problems in the country as well.
I'm looking at all of these pro-Maoist comments here and I'm genuinely confused as to why this generation of Chinese have become so blind to the errors of the past. My grandparents and parents and an entire generation of Chinese are utterly disillusioned with Communism and with good reason. It does not do to confuse nationalistic pride with a specific political ideology.
No matter takes the political issue in account or not, still this performance is one of the greatest performing art in history since PRC established.
Just imagine, in that status, the country was lacking of resources. However, they still insisted to put this performance out. It just like they tried their best to tell the world that they were strong enough after WWII.
Is there anything that we can learn from this performance (from the stage to the concept which behind the show)?
Competence and good character in government are more important than which ideology you follow. - I don't care if it's a black cat or white cat, if it catches mice it is a good cat.
Mao was a great leader and Deng a great leader. Certainly in recent decades China has been run in a more competent and sensible manner than Western nations obsessed with the illusion and deceit of neoliberalism.
Thank God the days are behind us when large portions of the world's population lived under tolitarian systems. China may not be perfect now, but it seems that people have much more freedom than they did then.
It's important to realise that idealism and leader worship didn't get big just because of Mao. As other videos on youtube show, the more market-leaning leaders, after seeing his great leap forward fail, put him in a figurehead position so that they could implement economic recovery programme whilst he wrote more for his published works (hongbaoshu[little red book])and so all that backfired since the masses, still poor by 1966, were now set up to embrace propaganda and get emotional/rowdy/violent
The Chinese people will forever respect the great leader from the deep hearts! Please be aware that there was no nation concept in the period at the beginning of the 20th century. It was Chairman Mao who united China!
I haven't read much about the modern history of China (but I am reading more about it) but I think the only thing mao was good for was creating a united nation...if you look back at how fragmented China was during warlord era / foreign imperialism, it's amazing how he brought together so many people into one nation. China's clout on the world stage today is because it's the biggest nation on earth, thanks to Mao. However, Mao's economic policy was fully abandoned by the time of Deng, thank god!
@Togepi271 modern day Qin Shi Huang...killed millions, burnt books, oppressed people but unified China, and look at how China flourished after Qin dynasty...in the same way, China will surge and flourish after Mao
@Togepi271 Killed millions? Please provide us data. Maybe he did kill members of the reactionary bourgeois class who themselves lead systematic massacres against poor Chinese workers and peasants. On the other hand, leaders of the imperialist system, especially U$ of AmeriKKKa continue to massacre and oppress hundreds of millions of people from the Third World but we don't hear much about the crimes of these imperialist-fascist leaders because they control the media!
@4everdbskify Maybe they are also taking it against Mao those people who died because of the flooding of the Yangtze River! Hahaha! Funny people, they love to blabber invectives and lies against things and people they know nothing of in the first place
@4everdbskify my grandpa was jailed by Mao for being an anti-revolutionary under no grounds whatsoever. Many "anti-revolutionaries" died. If you really think America is such an oppressive terrible country, then ask yourself why there are so many people wanting to get in this country? Mao starved many people to death in the Great Leap Forward and my mom had to endure that. I suggest you study your history more before mudslinging our country that gives you the freedom of speech to curse it!
@dougradtke Sure American's get freedom of speech, and inalienable rights, a government made by the people for the people. While Americans enjoy the luxuries of freedom, other countries around the world are paying the price for something they didn't deserve. Some countries, happy and prosperous, destroyed in one fell swoop, and all for what? Honduras, Bolivia, Argentina, Vietnam, Thailand, and Burma, just to name a few had became "special interests", their "dictators" were sponsored by the CIA.
@contractki11er What does any of that have to do with Mao, jailing anti-revolutionaries, and more people dying in the "Great Leap Forward" than the Holocaust? How about Cambodia which you left off your list I'm sure everyone had a great time with Pole Pot and the Khmer Rouge running the show.
So what would you do? Disband the CIA? Everything done against international communism at the time, was believed to be in international policy's best interest for America. Hindsight is 20/20.
do you know what are you talking about? please read more..... then analyzed it.... America his power are slowly going down the America has planned to stay in power by 2020
The Chinese are doing quite well since they are going through a period of rapid expansion, but there is a large lower class in the cities and countryside that are not in a particularly better position than before privatization. Living conditions have improved for skilled workers and those involved in business though.
They went down a similar path as the Soviet Union and if you think Russia is any more democratic now then you need to pull your head out of your ass. Many of the other former Soviet states have achieved greater democracy though. I want China to allow political freedom and democracy, but I also want a populace that is well taken care of. Allowing the decentralization of the market does not automatically allow freedom. I hope the Chinese regime is toppled and democratic reforms are ushered in.
Fuck you Tsukae.. learn your shit Communist China worships Mao. Have you ever fuckin been to China? He is the most beloved man in the country. Learn your shit before you speak.
I know he is beloved and all. He lead the Chinese people to becoming a major world power. I am just saying the party betrayed his ideals after he died. :P
Despite the mistakes Mao made, he was a passionate man who did great good for the Chinese people. Sucks the Communist Party in China betrayed him and the people by privatizing and shit. Maybe, someday, we will see China return to the glorious Socialist nation it once was.
That would be great. China has betrayed the Revolution! Mao would be ashamed to be in modern China. China must destroy capitalism and nationalise everything like Mao did.
@Tsukae as if Chin really wanted socialism, socialism doesn't work it was proven, and it almost destoried China... majority of the ppl don't want socialism, if somebody imposes socialism on China by force, China today would be like North Korea.........
@canadianfirzen In reality no Socialist nation has ever existed as employer/employee relations endured. This would mean that the PRC, USSR, and DPRK were all actually state-capitalist. Actual Socialism entails democratic control of the means of production by the working class.
@canadianfirzen Human desires? Do you mean human nature? It is a part of human nature to act in mutual aid of their fellow human being. It is a primary factor in evolutionary theory as a matter of fact. Read the book Mutual Aid.
@canadianfirzen What human desire? If that is a human desire why don't we kill our mothers? This strange idea of yours stems from your lack of understanding of evolutionary theory which depends upon mutual aid amongst the species even more so the mutual struggle within the species. We only ever developed language and lived in groups for our own mutual interests because strength and progress comes from unity and not discord. It is in our instincts to work together for our betterment is my point.
@Tsukae ur corporative nature and mutual aid exists, but it doesn't mean it is the only component of social behavior. Human's greed do exists as well. If u can't eliminate ppl's greed, how can u create an ideal world of socialism? The system itself is an ideology, and in fact a lot of ppl don't want this kinda of "equal". u can't force it upon them. socialism was proven to be not possible through implication. Especially for China, socialism would create disastrous result, so it is best not
@canadianfirzen I'm not saying it is the only component of social nature. What I am saying is that in the natural world it is more dominant. Greed does exist and that does not mean we won't have checks int eh system. I'm not talking about utopian nonsense. I'm not in anyway forcing it upon people. I am informing people of the alternatives. I am teaching people of the benefits of a democratic economy as opposed to our current economic situation where the few rule the toiling masses.
@Tsukae Then tell me wat did u mean by Mao is a passionate man who did great good for the Chin people? How can u check in a system where all the actual influence and policy comes from gov? If everythin was distributed by the gov, and everythin was based upon trust, the system is gonna collapse someday, becuz ppl always finds ways to get around a system. How do u no ur fellow workmate works as hard as u? This system itself is unjust becuz ppl can get the same reward with less effort!
@canadianfirzen Few is always gonna rule the mass, doesn't matter whether u have a socialist economy or not. Socialist economy can't be democratic, becuz once the economy becomes democratic, the economy would turn into capitalist economy, by then it is again few ruling the mass. The system of Socialism is full of holes, and it is actually against human nature. The shortcomings can't be fixed, therefore, it is best to go with a more natural system that majority chooses. Socialism is a dead end
@Tsukae how can u depend on others and trust their reliability? This system is full of self-defeatin nature. It destroys all the incentive for ppl to better themselves. Therefore, u will see ppl slackin off, and the whole country starves, as being proven by the Russians. This system is an ideology. Unless ppl don't have greed and don't have desires, this system would not be working properly.
@Tsukae .... great thing you still believe in it. I live in Venezuela and I can tell you that the Venezuelan people are getting sick and tired of this bad copy of Communism that Hugo Chavez is trying to impose on the country, destroying its economy and society. And..... letting at least 20 million Chinese die of starvation during the Great Leap Forward can't be viewed as a "mistake". It is a CRIME.
@Liuyifeng19 Deng had his good points, as did Mao. If Deng was a bit more leftist, I would bow before him. As it is, he opened up China far too much. Long live Comrade Mao Zedong! Long live China's New Left! Long live the People's Republic!
@Tsukae i hope u r fucking joking urself. I am Chinese myself, i love my country, but i will never want my country to get back to Cultural Revolution that destroyed 50% of all the historical items during those years.
To me, gloryfying a leader (or in mao's case, ruler) does not sound like a very socialist thing to do.
Mao was together with his buddy Stalin responsible for the perversion, corruption, and downfall of the worldwide communist movement. Building police states dressed up like socialist societies in stead of developing the forces for the emancipation of the international proletariat.
The cultural revolution was a vulgar display of stalinist crazyness.
@DeHeld8 .... mao and the revolution and the GPCR.... complex social phenomenon... but the video is great. and is quite beautiful in the socialist realist way... \
@MrReco12 Just read what he wrote? And the leftist organixations today Stand with imperialism. Like ISO, socialist worker etc... If you want to call yourself a leftist then you better Stand against Imperialims on all levels.
@DeHeld8 Mao's China was not a police state. There was no secret police. The Red Guards carried out the revolution. Chaotic it may be, but it was a dictatorship of the masses.
@Tsukae "Mistakes" you call them. Well . . . . He made the people stand up and China to be feared in the world. But as to the "mistakes," such as the Great Leap Forward, which created the greatest mass starvation in modern history--35 million starved to death, because the wheat refused to read the Little Red Book and grow where he wanted, and the gathered tin pots and farm implements made useless steel--plants will not grow in the soil of ideology, nor steel in the fire of political struggle.
@umavunga what are you? a soviet? if you are then fuck you... we Chinese planted those wheats so we can pay our debt to you soviets... what did your stalin said? "here China, we are friends, you can pay your debts later... hehehe..." but fuck! you force us to pay it or else your soviet will attack us... fuck you! what Mao said was true "we cannot depend on others, nor god, nor kings, nor the soviet will help us... we must depend on ourselves" fuck you for being ignorant!
Replace the "Silk" label with "Apple" on the crates (7:40) and you'll realize very little has changed in China. Mao's revolution has disappeared.

Certainly in recent decades China has been run in a more competent and sensible manner than Western nations obsessed with the illusion and deceit of neoliberalism.

ivanenrile 1 year ago 7

It was Chairman Mao who united China!
lihongzhi0 1 year ago 3
I haven't read much about the modern history of China (but I am reading more about it) but I think the only thing mao was good for was creating a united nation...if you look back at how fragmented China was during warlord era / foreign imperialism, it's amazing how he brought together so many people into one nation. China's clout on the world stage today is because it's the biggest nation on earth, thanks to Mao. However, Mao's economic policy was fully abandoned by the time of Deng, thank god!

Togepi271 1 year ago
@Togepi271 Killed millions? Please provide us data. Maybe he did kill members of the reactionary bourgeois class who themselves lead systematic massacres against poor Chinese workers and peasants. On the other hand, leaders of the imperialist system, especially U$ of AmeriKKKa continue to massacre and oppress hundreds of millions of people from the Third World but we don't hear much about the crimes of these imperialist-fascist leaders because they control the media!

@4everdbskify Maybe they are also taking it against Mao those people who died because of the flooding of the Yangtze River! Hahaha! Funny people, they love to blabber invectives and lies against things and people they know nothing of in the first place
ivanenrile 1 year ago
@4everdbskify my grandpa was jailed by Mao for being an anti-revolutionary under no grounds whatsoever. Many "anti-revolutionaries" died. If you really think America is such an oppressive terrible country, then ask yourself why there are so many people wanting to get in this country? Mao starved many people to death in the Great Leap Forward and my mom had to endure that. I suggest you study your history more before mudslinging our country that gives you the freedom of speech to curse it!
dougradtke 7 months ago
@dougradtke Sure American's get freedom of speech, and inalienable rights, a government made by the people for the people. While Americans enjoy the luxuries of freedom, other countries around the world are paying the price for something they didn't deserve. Some countries, happy and prosperous, destroyed in one fell swoop, and all for what? Honduras, Bolivia, Argentina, Vietnam, Thailand, and Burma, just to name a few had became "special interests", their "dictators" were sponsored by the CIA.
contractki11er 7 months ago
@contractki11er What does any of that have to do with Mao, jailing anti-revolutionaries, and more people dying in the "Great Leap Forward" than the Holocaust? How about Cambodia which you left off your list I'm sure everyone had a great time with Pole Pot and the Khmer Rouge running the show.
So what would you do? Disband the CIA? Everything done against international communism at the time, was believed to be in international policy's best interest for America. Hindsight is 20/20.

The Chinese are doing quite well since they are going through a period of rapid expansion, but there is a large lower class in the cities and countryside that are not in a particularly better position than before privatization. Living conditions have improved for skilled workers and those involved in business though.
Tsukae 1 year ago
They went down a similar path as the Soviet Union and if you think Russia is any more democratic now then you need to pull your head out of your ass. Many of the other former Soviet states have achieved greater democracy though. I want China to allow political freedom and democracy, but I also want a populace that is well taken care of. Allowing the decentralization of the market does not automatically allow freedom. I hope the Chinese regime is toppled and democratic reforms are ushered in.

AntinousIsGod1 2 years ago
@Tsukae as if Chin really wanted socialism, socialism doesn't work it was proven, and it almost destoried China... majority of the ppl don't want socialism, if somebody imposes socialism on China by force, China today would be like North Korea.........
canadianfirzen 1 year ago
@canadianfirzen In reality no Socialist nation has ever existed as employer/employee relations endured. This would mean that the PRC, USSR, and DPRK were all actually state-capitalist. Actual Socialism entails democratic control of the means of production by the working class.
Tsukae 1 year ago
@Tsukae ...... as if it could happen, ppl who thinks this will work is naive... humans have desires, and it's impossible to destory it....
canadianfirzen 1 year ago
@canadianfirzen Human desires? Do you mean human nature? It is a part of human nature to act in mutual aid of their fellow human being. It is a primary factor in evolutionary theory as a matter of fact. Read the book Mutual Aid.
Tsukae 1 year ago
@Tsukae it is human desire that drives ppl to destory others, and this can't be eliminated
canadianfirzen 1 year ago
@canadianfirzen What human desire? If that is a human desire why don't we kill our mothers? This strange idea of yours stems from your lack of understanding of evolutionary theory which depends upon mutual aid amongst the species even more so the mutual struggle within the species. We only ever developed language and lived in groups for our own mutual interests because strength and progress comes from unity and not discord. It is in our instincts to work together for our betterment is my point.
Tsukae 1 year ago
@Tsukae ur corporative nature and mutual aid exists, but it doesn't mean it is the only component of social behavior. Human's greed do exists as well. If u can't eliminate ppl's greed, how can u create an ideal world of socialism? The system itself is an ideology, and in fact a lot of ppl don't want this kinda of "equal". u can't force it upon them. socialism was proven to be not possible through implication. Especially for China, socialism would create disastrous result, so it is best not
canadianfirzen 1 year ago
@canadianfirzen I'm not saying it is the only component of social nature. What I am saying is that in the natural world it is more dominant. Greed does exist and that does not mean we won't have checks int eh system. I'm not talking about utopian nonsense. I'm not in anyway forcing it upon people. I am informing people of the alternatives. I am teaching people of the benefits of a democratic economy as opposed to our current economic situation where the few rule the toiling masses.
Tsukae 1 year ago
@Tsukae Then tell me wat did u mean by Mao is a passionate man who did great good for the Chin people? How can u check in a system where all the actual influence and policy comes from gov? If everythin was distributed by the gov, and everythin was based upon trust, the system is gonna collapse someday, becuz ppl always finds ways to get around a system. How do u no ur fellow workmate works as hard as u? This system itself is unjust becuz ppl can get the same reward with less effort!
canadianfirzen 1 year ago
@canadianfirzen Few is always gonna rule the mass, doesn't matter whether u have a socialist economy or not. Socialist economy can't be democratic, becuz once the economy becomes democratic, the economy would turn into capitalist economy, by then it is again few ruling the mass. The system of Socialism is full of holes, and it is actually against human nature. The shortcomings can't be fixed, therefore, it is best to go with a more natural system that majority chooses. Socialism is a dead end
canadianfirzen 1 year ago
@Tsukae how can u depend on others and trust their reliability? This system is full of self-defeatin nature. It destroys all the incentive for ppl to better themselves. Therefore, u will see ppl slackin off, and the whole country starves, as being proven by the Russians. This system is an ideology. Unless ppl don't have greed and don't have desires, this system would not be working properly.
canadianfirzen 1 year ago
@Tsukae .... great thing you still believe in it. I live in Venezuela and I can tell you that the Venezuelan people are getting sick and tired of this bad copy of Communism that Hugo Chavez is trying to impose on the country, destroying its economy and society. And..... letting at least 20 million Chinese die of starvation during the Great Leap Forward can't be viewed as a "mistake". It is a CRIME.

Listen to the text of this song.
