@lexusowner You're not hearing the syncopation with the right hand, also accented with the kick, while he keeps a steady whipping motion (moeller) motion with the left, and having the hi-hat splash together the entire time. Near the end he accents with both hands. You're basically just missing some awesome limb independence, and not to mention the PERFECT, I mean, fucking PERFECT hand technique involved throughout.

The technique is known as a moeller drop bounce with the right hand and the left hand is utilizing a thumb stroke and the fingers push the stick back up into the air. You just release and catch.c When the solo becomes more dynamic in the last quarter hes just using moeller pull out accents.

There are many combinations of technique used here. Moeller whipping motion is one, Gladstone or finger technique, as well, sometimes completely blended together "Mayer-Moeller" anyone?

@JUVEinter2a1il5DICEM it's called the push pull, something Buddy Rich invented and didn't tell anyone about. It's alternating wrist strokes and finger strokes. For traditional you need a lot more bounce than with your right hand or with matched grip. He explains it all in his DVD.

I love jojo. And if you haven't got his dvd... GET IT.

His control is fantastic, and it is achievable. Like he explains, in order to get the muscle control from the hands, you must isolate and develop each moving finger. Do this, and do it everyday in your prac routine, and you can achieve the level he is heading towards ( i still believe he will blow us away again in the future) The key to improving is repetition. The sooner you realise this, the faster you will improve. GO JOJO!!!

His right hand is in underarm grip - to fire out consistent strokes at that tempo already proves his skillfulness. I tried it and it was too fast. Plus he's using Moeller method most or all the time. His right hand looks like a fish flopping on a chopping board except in fast motion and smaller movement... Being able to do that he simply amazes me. o_O

A big +5 for this solo. So different to those who just whip chops out and call it a solo.

hes actually using the freestroke technique, which in a way is the exact opposite movement of the moeller technique. Its controlled by the downward movement of his wrist, then the upward snap of his wrist and fingers.

The raw power and emotion he exhibits live is something to behold.

I remember when I was a kid--not having heard the drums in person. I heard them in the 6th grade when some kid played a crappy rock beat on the school set, and I got an adrenaline rush just from hearing it. I knew the drums were it for me after that.

This solo brought me back to that moment where you feel almost "giddy" when you hear such talent. Truly amazing. No drummer can match Jojo for technique and style

I don't think many people realize exactly how much skill is required in composing such a piece as this, and the fact that Jojo can rock this so hard while still making virtually zero mistakes or faulty notes is just stupefying. I recently had a chance to see Jojo at one of his clinics and he performed a piece similar to this but with an even greater emphasis on accented notes and Moeller Technique. I am constantly in awe of his mastery of his drums. Right now very few can even come close to him

Xformat01's simple just means the idea that sprouts the whole "song" was quite simple and derived from basic drum sounds. However tuning the drums and the playing that goes with it is not simple at all. It's like a composer who puts together all the notes for an orchestra, but here a single drummer is playing the entire piece. Though my description might be exaggerated...
