When posting a link to this on my Fasebohk, I figured that "[Metal Storm is] Sorta like the Half-Life 2 to VVVVVV's Portal." But I think this is mostly based on a similar mechanic sans the pew-pew-pewing.
[If I've posted this before, I apologize; wouldn't post when I'd first typed it back in October (or earlier), so finally putting this up now.]
this guy is kinda faggy, and talks really fast sometimes. there's also some awkward cringe-worthy moments just about every episode. otherwise, he does review cool looking games that i usually dont know much about.
Saw your first review a week ago and now ive watched them all man your a great talent and now I'm also constantly on Retroware TV thanks to you. Also picking up this game up looks amazing for the NES. Thanks man
The 1st 40 seconds of the intro song are so annoying, :) I mean I admit I am a nerd too and agree with the rest of the review, just saying, anyway, I beat this game on Expert, it was so tough as far as NES games go they don't get much tougher than that mode. Ghosts and Goblins type games I suck at too but those are kinda cheap. This game doesn't feel cheap but pretty fair. Basically one-hit and you're dead, great bosses and the switching gravity gimmick was never done better. TOTALLY UNDER-RATED
Here's something you forgot to talk about, not that I'm complaining. The game utilizes (sic) paralax scrolling. The closer the layer of background, the faster it moves. The background moves faster than the foreground. Glad I got that out of the way.
Derek is genuinely awesome, a great alternative to AVGN.
This is where Chris Bores went wrong, he should have acknowledged James Rolfe's sublime work, had he done that he probably would have gained much greater respect from the online community and fans on the whole , plus it would have prevented most of the trolling that is going on as a result of his failure to do so..
well if you do consider this guy a copycat of james then he is the only guy that can do it.He is very detailed and his videos are interesting plus i like to here about great classic games

I have to say I WANT to say I have seen this at the local rental store when I was a kid based on the box art to the game alone, but I could be wrong...needless to say I picked this game up on ebay (a little pricy, but you sold me on it), and even though I am stuck on level 3 I am greatly enjoying the game, from the gameplay to the sprits and animation of it all.....I'll be sure to put more time into it after Summer II classes are over this coming week..thanks for pointing us to a unknown classic
The virtual console would be a blessing if it NoA was more interested in it rather than filling store shelves with shovelware so they can make a quick buck off of new gamers who don't know any better.

Oh yeah and by the way, the Angry Video Game Nerd's first review wasn't nearly as good as this.
Another game that's extremely overrated is "Astal" for the sega saturn. Great controls, great animation, and kick-ass music! And it was also wasn't too hard.

@LordVili i'd say more of a fan. I dont need to own every single game just to have them all just like the AVGN (you won't see me with action52 :P), but i do want to own all the games worth having yes. The NES and SNES (mostly NES) are my favorite consoles of all time. I still use them both a lot

My biggest problem was the one hit death. Man, in Megaman at least you have a health meter. You're this giant, badass mech and one little ding and you explode. Sigh.

I love Irem personally they got R-type right? is that not enough to get the notice that maybe they got a little more to offer just maybe. I think more than I feel sorry for MetalStorm I feel sorry for IREM. I mean they didn't get nearly the notice they should have.
@treismac I was sad to get to play TurboGrafx real late always new about it saw the CD addon demos at the store and all ... only to find out many years later it had more the kinda games I loved than most the other consoles. It was shmup heaven it and the Saturn sadly another system I didnt get around to until years. I find if most don't like it than I most likely will love it.

Watching this video prompted me to hunt down a copy for myself, and I sure am glad I did -- it's amazing. Has to be in the top 10 NES games ever....maybe even the top 5. What a gem!
@nero8289 Well I don't mind telling you it took me well over a year - close to 2 - to find it. But I didn't really do anything special, I just kept going to stores that specialize in buying, selling and trading old games. One day I just happened to get lucky and spotted it hiding in a giant bin beneath a mountain of other crappy games. My advice would be to just keep looking and hope for a lucky break. Though I'm sure you could find plenty of people on the internet selling their old games, too.

Dude at first I was going to say something mean but I think you did a good job. But really the avgn theme and trying to be opposite of James is a little stupid. Metal Storm was one of my top 10 NES games as a kid. Loved that game, it was so much fun. It's really a shame more people didn't play it, it's really great.
For those who don't know the HGVN i feel is better than the AVGN who isn't really that funny. Also he isn't a rip off he just makes videos and if you don't like it just get off. Plus HVGN is my shit and i'm totally going to beat Sweet Home
Metal Storm kicks ass. It was an amazing feat on the NES back then and a really innovative game as well. The M-308 was every kid's fantasy growing up. Who wouldn't want to go stomping down the suburbs with this baby. Awesome!
I got this on an emulator :D It's awesome. I haven't gotten past the second level, but mostly because I haven't tried. And you are starting to get better then AVGN because he's starting to wear out.

You're so ... happy. It cheers me up when I feel a little down (or watched to much AVGN lol) I guess Irem is an indie game company. There are a lot of indie game companies (back then and now) that come out with a lot of great games. Who knows, maybe there's another indie gem that's more enjoyable than Metal Storm. Oh, btw, Metal Storm IS a fun game. I remember passing the expert quest at a friends house. Too bad he moved, I can't play it anymore. :(

I love that you made this video, it's great that you're digging up this classic and you made research about it's origins, but I have a correction about that. IREM did publish the game...but this isnt the same as developing it, it just means they made the game into a cart and put it in the shelves, the people who designed it are the developers; tamex. at mobygames check metal-storm specifically the game designer Kengo Miyata, he isnt credited in any more games.So he might've left the industry.

The title and cover art work against the game looks pretty bland it's what's made me over look the game. Watching you play it this game looks sweet you should rate your favorite platformers in a episode.
As an amiga gamer (then gba), I never new about this game. It's clearly a good one. I WILL check this game out.

Dude at first I was going to say something mean but I think you did a good job. But really the avgn theme and trying to be opposite of James is a little stupid. Just be yourself:) it helps when people dont try and copy other people and i think it would be really good if you just were yourself. No need to dress and try and sound like James.

Metal Storm was one of my top 10 NES games as a kid. Loved that game, it was so much fun. It's really a shame more people didn't play it, it's really great.

Metal Storm kicks ass. It was an amazing feat on the NES back then and a really innovative game as well. The M-308 was every kid's fantasy growing up. Who wouldn't want to go stomping down the suburbs with this baby. Awesome!

I got this on an emulator :D It's awesome. I haven't gotten past the second level, but mostly because I haven't tried. And you are starting to get better then AVGN because he's starting to wear out.

You're so ... happy. It cheers me up when I feel a little down (or watched to much AVGN lol) I guess Irem is an indie game company. There are a lot of indie game companies (back then and now) that come out with a lot of great games. Who knows, maybe there's another indie gem that's more enjoyable than Metal Storm. Oh, btw, Metal Storm IS a fun game. I remember passing the expert quest at a friends house. Too bad he moved, I can't play it anymore. :(

I love that you made this video, it's great that you're digging up this classic and you made research about it's origins, but I have a correction about that. IREM did publish the game...but this isnt the same as developing it, it just means they made the game into a cart and put it in the shelves, the people who designed it are the developers; tamex. at mobygames check metal-storm specifically the game designer Kengo Miyata, he isnt credited in any more games.So he might've left the industry.
