The concept of NS was never popular because it was pure crap and everyone with a thinking, fully functional brain knew that even way back in the 50s. The concept failed because people had the freedom to protest and there were still avenues for objection.

The NS conscription law was rammed through because the PAP was the only party in power with no more opposition parties in parliament. That was a day of infamy where whole scale brain washing of all 18 yr old males began to this very day.
