Very cool! It's wonderful to watch someone with great skill work their trade. Near the end when he heats up the widened glass bowl and spins it to make the "fluted" wavy effect, I was in awe.
I tought it was just put a block of sand in the furnace with some coal to burn it and soon you get a block of glass, but it doesnt looks that simple in real life.
Just the way of making Glass is magic, more than product. What you think about Glass is not a solid but a super slow liquid? I mean, I saw in this article that glass never crystallized. Any answers, opinion?
I've just seen this show a few hours ago, and I'm in a hotel. Absolutely BREATHTAKING!!!! As is Corning. It is such a beautiful place and there's so much to do. :)
Excellent place to stop and tour at if you are travelling through southern Upstate New York. I went through it one day in the Summer of 1975 when it was formerly called the Corning Glass Center along with the Rockwell Museum of Western Art there,and the Roberson Science Center in Binghamton. Another excellent place to stop and tour at is the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland Ohio.
the coolest pieces have imperfections in them. like in Roman glass! thats why the original rough glass making techniques must be preserved. i think the typical modern wine bottle or kitchen glass thats bland and lifeless is boring!
7:06 at the top of the screen you can see a camera view of the furnace, when i went there the people said there the only glass company with something like this. its amazing
no copper would let heat travel too far up the pipe. the pipes are made of high carbon content stainless steel, the heat travels at most a quarter of the way up the pipe. if you used copper you'd be melting your hand off.
@Colin24Astonwood Blowing glass is usually kept at around 2100-2150, and pure copper has a melting point of ~1980, so that wouldn't be a good choice of pipe material. Even iron pipes can reach forging temperatures when blowing glass.

No, coppers so soft it can actually be encased in glass without shattering the glass. do NOT attempt to use copper tube as a blowpipe you will burn the fuck out of yourself.
No, you can't use copper pipe instead of iron. This is because copper (Cu) is a very good conductor of heat. Furthermore, this is due to the extra electrons on the outer shell.
@Colin24Astonwood copper has a much lower melting point than iron or steel, it also transfers heat much much faster meaning you may not be able to hold the pipe as closely. i am not a glass expert but i have a strong metal fab background
I'm honestly shocked a large corporation wouldn't have him wearing protective gloves. Look how close he gets sometimes. I just heard the anouncer say "We've had some people learn the hard way".
Cool stuff never the less. I invested in Corning about a month ago.... not goin well so far, hopefully we'll see a change soon. It really is an excellent company.
glass workers don't usually wear gloves unless they are doing something huge. and besides, having the gloves on actually makes it harder to hold and handle the tools potentially creating a worse injury. plus, your hands don't get as close to the glass as you would think. Now, you may be saying, "well how about the newspaper?" well, the newspaper is kept in water and doesn't get hot.

Could you use a Copper blow pipe instead of Iron? Just doing some research on Glass Blowing!
Colin24Astonwood 2 years ago
I have no idea. I was only watching these guys work their magic ;-)
SinanUnur 2 years ago 7
No you cannot use copper, the pipe would melt. And the pipes they're using here are actually steel. They just call it an iron because of tradition
mserebreny 2 years ago
@Colin24Astonwood No because, copper is an extraordinary conductor of heat and electricity. Thats why they use it for computer wiring and what not.
verryla 1 year ago
@Colin24Astonwood hey. no you can't . the copper will just melt. i know because my hs has glass and we were fusing copper into glass
shadowheart43 1 year ago
@Colin24Astonwood well maybe its getting your hands too hot and the glass to cold.
QBMan 1 year ago
@Colin24Astonwood
no copper's too heat conducive. the steel is used because it won't wick heat to the level of your hand.
Dierwolf2000 1 year ago
@Colin24Astonwood
copper conducts heat more so the 'iron' would get hotter further up and be impossible to hold, plus it would oxidide at this temperature

@Colin24Astonwood No you couldn't, copper is known to be the best heat conductor so when you take out the glass you'll just burn yourself :F

The glass is at 1000 dg C - copper melts at around 700 dg C
copper is sometimes used in the melt of glass to colour it.
