But Hawaii (the island chain that Pearl Harbor and Henderson field sit on) wasnt a state of America, it didnt become one until 1959. So in a literal sense, The US homeland was never in any great danger. I should have said mainland, that would have been clearer. The US MAINLAND was never in any real jeopardy.

Home Rule to me was always a watered down version of what we eventually achieved, the Home Rulers would have still been in the Brits pockets and would have easily succumbed to British influence. You forget about the ports though, and I'd say Dublin would have been levelled. If Ireland was still part of the UK it would be worse, look at Wales and Scotland, they are more run down than here...

@Schooldude93 the British government mostly puts English interests first and foremost and what ever else filters down they throw out to Wales and Scotland, they pump a lot of money into NI but thats only to avoid further conflict and try to normalise the area. I think that 1916 gave Irish people inspiration but it was up to the people afterwards what they did with it, some had the right ideas and some had the wrong ones. Are you not proud to be an Irish citizen and not a British one?

@Schooldude93 I still think 1916 was justified but people get too caught up on it, the war of independence was our finest hour pity it led to our darkest hour the civil war. Scotland and Wales in general are more rundown though, they earn less etc, I've been to Glasgow and Cardiff and they don't measure up to Dublin, I'm sure Edinburgh would be the same. The constitution of 1937 gave too much power to the Catholic Church and caused a lot of problems

@Schooldude93 with the loss of Collins we lost our driving force the man who effectively freed most of the country through firstly outsmarting the British in the war of independence and then negotiating effectively for the best deal he could get. We had less freedom under Britain in other ways though, much bigger ways such as economically, mitarily, constitutionally etc, and I'd rather this. The British believed (and some still do) that we were thick bogtrotters who couldn't govern oursleves

The infant mortality rate in Dublin was worse than Calcutta, which shows the level of poverty the Irish people were living in compared to the British that lived here. I don't understand how 1916 was a bad thing, to me it is one of our finest moments....

@RichardElden Yes Pearl Harbor was a great naval base, world class. But Hawaii (the island chain that Pearl Harbor and Henderson field sit on) wasnt a state of America, it didnt become one until 1959. So in a literal sense, The US homeland was never in any great danger. I should have said mainland, that would have been clearer. The US MAINLAND was never in any real jeopardy.

They did night raids with EXTREMELY limited accuracy not to mention consistency instead of day raids because it was "too dangerous". It took the balls of steel of over 88,000 US airmen to do daytime raids and land most of their bombs on target. And we sent over at least 100,000 Marines to europe, which well over 24,000 were killed fighting YOUR war.

Unless you have a lot of money you have no opportunities of further education in the UK, at least here €2000 gives people more of a chance. As for the vote the Irish Catholics weren't allowed to sit in parliament till 1829, hundreds of years after

Home Rule to me was always a watered down version of what we eventually achieved, the Home Rulers would have still been in the Brits pockets and would have easily succumbed to British influence. You forget about the ports though, and I'd say Dublin would have been levelled. If Ireland was still part of the UK it would be worse, look at Wales and Scotland, they are more run down than here...

but as I said before, thats just my opinion, and I get where your coming from, British opression was a bad thing, your right, I just think 1916 made everything worse, it was unnecesary, caused alot of unnecessary death at the time and went on to cause alot more (war of independence, civil war, Northen Ireland)

@Schooldude93 the British government mostly puts English interests first and foremost and what ever else filters down they throw out to Wales and Scotland, they pump a lot of money into NI but thats only to avoid further conflict and try to normalise the area. I think that 1916 gave Irish people inspiration but it was up to the people afterwards what they did with it, some had the right ideas and some had the wrong ones. Are you not proud to be an Irish citizen and not a British one?

As you put it like that I would have an amount of respect for the insurgents of 1916 as they fought in uniform and almost like a regular army, not as police murdering terrorists. But I still think the country would have been better without 1916, I think we could have achieved the same level of independance we got from the anglo irish treaty but constitutionaly and avoided alot of death... of course maybe we would have just ended up like

@Schooldude93 I still think 1916 was justified but people get too caught up on it, the war of independence was our finest hour pity it led to our darkest hour the civil war. Scotland and Wales in general are more rundown though, they earn less etc, I've been to Glasgow and Cardiff and they don't measure up to Dublin, I'm sure Edinburgh would be the same. The constitution of 1937 gave too much power to the Catholic Church and caused a lot of problems

@seery899 scotland and wales, although I hardly think its fair to say they're more rundown than us, I mean everywhere has disadvantaged areas, and it is only in the last few decades that irelands even caught up with the modern world, look at us in the 60's and 70's was it? we were worse than Poland is now. I know Im getting off topic here, but I would actually have rather been living as a British satelite than a vatican one. It seems a little contradictory that they would work so hard to remove

The chatolic church basically wrote our constition, then the government began trying to please the church by taking away our civil liberties, divorce, contraception, abortion, banned all dances (unless they were in church halls and accompanied by gardai and parents) and censored anything the church deemed imoral, which was alot of material... would the home rule government have done this? because

@Schooldude93 It was De Valera's constitution so the responsibility lies with him, it is interesting to think what people such as Collins would have done if they had lived, I believe that Collins would have been a much better leader, I hate the ''Collins was a brilliant soldier but not a politician'', these people forget that Collins was well educated and had a lot more to offer off the battlefield.

@Schooldude93 with the loss of Collins we lost our driving force the man who effectively freed most of the country through firstly outsmarting the British in the war of independence and then negotiating effectively for the best deal he could get. We had less freedom under Britain in other ways though, much bigger ways such as economically, mitarily, constitutionally etc, and I'd rather this. The British believed (and some still do) that we were thick bogtrotters who couldn't govern oursleves

@Schooldude93 they have no right to take away our freedom in any circumstances, don't forget the British made a mess of their economy also, yes it is not in as bad a state as ours but it is still struggling due to government decisions. Look at the 'capable' British government that led the UK to a war in Iraq that served no puropse and led to death and disability for so many young men and women. I'm happy I have no part in that, but I feel sorry for the young working class used as cannon fodder

Stole our land, let over a million die in the famine, turned Dublin into a disgusting red light district where they used impoverished young Irish girls as sex objects, Dublin was in a worse state than Calcutta in 1913 so that proves that progress wasn't being made and 1916 was 100% justified and noble...

@seery899 until you do, what you say is might be true, and whst they did was indeed shameful, yet progress was being made, from 1906 they started making positive changes for the Irish, providing loans to buy land, opening universities for us things like that, Calcutta cant have been that bad in 1913 if that was the case. But my argument was not to what extent we were fucked over by the Brits. It was that 1916 was the worst thing that has ever happened to this country.

@Schooldude93 my view on the British occupation is that even the concessions they made near the end were too little too late, they scoffed at the Irish Home Rule bill throughout the 1800's and had no credibility to govern Ireland from London. The infant mortality rate in Dublin was worse than Calcutta, which shows the level of poverty the Irish people were living in compared to the British that lived here. I don't understand how 1916 was a bad thing, to me it is one of our finest moments....
