Okay... this is a gay male who got 4/10 people wrong on their sexuality.
All the freakin' time my (straight) mother has to say that someone she sees on tv (e.g., Who Wants to be a Millionaire) is gay, she is always sure she is right. I normally say "You can't be sure. And anyway, why do you care?!" to which she retorts "Oh sweetie you're just mad because you have no gaydar".
*sighs* Ironically I'm a polysexual genderqueer person and she has no idea.
And I did not said it meaning to seem rude or anything, so I'm sorry if I did. Just thought you might be interested :) I also would love to meet him! He's so amazing.
@carrieslilsis Even though, you may be from somewhere else (Scotland in this case) and you live in another place for most of your life (America) and your accent fades, it is quite common though, that upon returning home and hearing the influx of said accents, you start slipping back into the accent you had growing up. It's usually unconsciously.
I, myself, don't appear to have an accent, having grown up in America. Upon going to Germany, I will unconsciously start speaking with a heavy accent.
why does he speak very heavily in a scottish accent when he speaks to his parents???? he is an absolutely beautiful man, and I would love to meet him and scottie<3333333 omg his reaction when he called the tests was great. i love john barrowman.<3
why does he speak very heavily in a scottish accent when he speaks to his parents???? he is an absolutely beautiful man, and I would love to meet him and scottie<3333333
@carrieslilsis He speaks in a Scottish accent when he talks to his parents because he is originally from Scotland and moved to the US when he was 9. Where he was bullied for talking with a Scottish accent, so he then decided to learn to talk with an American accent and has never lost it, but he can easily swap between the two! Scott dislikes him talking in a Scottish accent though, as he has only ever know him to talk in an American one!! =)x
I find him to be so inspriational. I feel really confused about everything in my life right now and people like John Barrowman make me feel just the little bit more confident and comfortable with who I am.
Also, really off topic, but did anyone else notice that the earplugs he's wearing at the beginning look like the things the Cybermen were using to control people in the Doctor Who episode?
@TonksMoony I noticed! XD He's worn like a blue-tooth type device in another video and that reminded me of something from Torchwood/Dr. Who as well, so I found it amusing.
Maybe I'm out to lunch, but I don't feel I was born with any sexuality. I didn't even notice anyone in that way until I was older. I grew up believing we all have "moms and dads" but that was only because of what I was allowed to observe. I didn't have any feeling about it at all. In fact in my house, before I was 18, I was ashamed to admit that I liked girls! imagine that. My dad would make fun of me if he caught me looking at a girl and confiscated my sports illustrated swimsuit issue.
Am I the only straight guy with a different experience? Until I was about 12 or 13, I hated girls. They were weird and icky and gross. Then all of a sudden, they started to change and so did I. Maybe people develop early, which could explain how you "know" when you're 9 years old, but I didn't like ANYBODY like that until I was 13 or 14 and then all I saw were boobs. I grew up with a mom and a dad, but I never felt like I had a sexual orientation until I hit puberty.
@surfer53 I am a bisexual girl but I can relate to your story. Until the age fo 12 I thought I was straight, not becuase of my feelings for boys, but because I assumed that was what everyone was. When I was 12 I began to notice girls and found myself attracted to them.
@SmileForInsanity Oh my god, exact same thing with me! Except that I'm still in my teenage years and still incredibly confused. Definitely notice girls, sort of notice guys... Any tips or advice for me, if it's not too personal? I'm a little bit scared because I live in a town where most everyone is homophobic for religious reasons.
@candymandy224 Don't worry. It is your emotions, you life, your feelings. It is natural to be confused. Try not to let it bother you too much, relax and allow yourself to be who you are. My parents were completly accepting of my sexuality so I felt comfortable, but I known many people who do not. If it worries you confide in someone you trust, it can help to have people listen. Feel free to message me with anything. I am ready to help in any way I can.
I respect Barrowman, but I think when he took a test to "prove" that being gay "wasn't his fault," the guy lost it for me. As a straight guy, nobody has to convince me that your orientation is a choice. I don't choose for my pants to get exceedingly tight whenever I see a pair of nice breasts and a beautiful girl with a nice smile. Above all that, his relationship with Scott is a personal matter and none of my business. Whether I like it or not, that's his life and not mine.
@mindydrummer Well that statement that he made to me might be taken differently by someone else. When I hear that (and since I have experience with being bullied because of my sexuality) I hear him saying it as him being shocked. That if he'd stayed in Scotland that the bullying might have caused him to question taking his life, but not because he was ashamed of himself or Scott. I see it as him saying that he was glad that he was accepted and grew up being supported no matter who he was. :D
@AtreidesHeir to be fair, i never got bullied when i came out, so i guess i have no experience in that area. so maybe youre right, yeah. i men, its all what you interpret, right? so maybe scott was shocked and a bit hurt/scared/whatever. i dunno, just maybe
ugh that psychologist was using respondent condition that behaviour analysts sometimes use. It's people like that which gives beahviour anlaysts such a bad name! Shame on him!
I believe that what is wrong with sexuality in the world is that people forget that it is a privte thing. We arew not animals. Why do it in public? Even in films, when a woman is not naked doing weird stuff, the movie is given bad reviews. Homosexuality experiences this prejudice because of the few who openly engage in sexuality and who flaunt it. Women are called Wh*res when they do this and men are called perverts when they flaunt theirs. Both often experience violence.
@jamaq --No matter how legalized it was back then, it had terrible consequences here in America. Dear John and otherls like him were persecuted and discriminated against horribly. This documentary let me see his side of the story in a way I had never seen before. My heart goes out to him.
@jamaq The legalisation of homosexuality in the USA happened at different times in different states. When Barrowman was growing up in the USA, he lived in Illinois, a jurisdiction that scrapped the criminalisation of of private homosexual acts among consenting adults in 1961.
Homosexuality was legalised in England & Wales in 1967 and in Scotland in 1980. It was only legalised in Northern Ireland in 1982 as a result of the European Court of Human Rights ruling in Dudgeon v. UK.
pete price is a scouse legend and i dont care that he's gay, its who he is and i love him for who he is, he makes me laugh and has a wicked sense of humour who u love doesnt matter. my brother is gay and is one of the kindest people u would ever care to meet. we need to stop the gross injustice that gays recieve, they are humans like us and have the same needs and cares as we do. does anybody else agree? if u dont, no need to comment
Please could someone help me understand what the person on the telephone says at 9:24 lol. He speaks quite fast and there is noise so I don't get it lol, I'm french ^^
My God, that story Pete was telling was absolutely horrifying! Being tortured like that for "medical" reasons just because he's gay? That's terrible! Poor Pete.
Hey, not all parts are on here and such. So i would just like to say that if you search "John Barrowman - The Making Of Me" on Megavideo the whole episode is there. (:
I have always believed that I was born gay too, it is genetic and more and more studies are finding that this may indeed be true. If you are str8 and detest this claim then you should watch your judgement as you have never walked in our shoes. It is the same as being left handed or born with blue eyes vs green, in the middle ages they used to punish the left handed until they realised what caused it, I am hoping for the same in the case of homosexuality!
By that same logic, I can say I hate all straight men because this guy keeps asking me out even though he knows I'm gay.
Doesn't quite work that like. You can't say you don't like an entire group of people just because one of them is annoyingly awful. The same guy is left handed and ginger. I don't have anyting against left-handed, ginger or straight men.
@SCOTTISHSOULANDHEART Me neither, but I have a problem with this special. Which is weird, because I'm watching as a straight guy. It's fascinating to me that someone would care. I don't question where being straight comes from. I'm just attracted to women. At the same time, I see him seeking approval not as damnation on society, because we all have a right to think what we want, but on gay culture for not empowering each other to be who they are and fuck what anyone thinks.
@tobythesandwich If falling in love were so easy... There's still so much social "programming" where men (in particular) don't embrace this aspect of themselves, even if it's part of them. They would rather live a life of "fitting in" than enjoy the life they should be living. I have met (and loved) men who live this way, masculine guys too! They just see what's being presented as "gay" stereotypes and want no part of it. If there were no gay / straight "camps" we could embrace love, NO LABELS!
lol at the GBLTA center at my school, we have a week of celebration called Queer Awareness Week and one of the main attractions is the "Guess the Straight Person Pannel"
It's near idenitcal to what John is doing in this program.
OMG! I remember watching this last year on bbc america,(i live in the U.S.) I didnt know what dr. who was at the time. but now im obsessed with it. i just now made the connection... haha John is AWESOME
First off, I want to thank whoever it was that downloaded this onto Youtube!
I understand this was done by BBC. I really would love to see this shown on America's PBS. Might educate some "religious' types.
I am a gay man. as a child I Never wanted to play with dolls, my ring finger is longer then my index finger, I am the gay brother of a younger hetro brother. I Know in my heart that I was born gay! Looking back,I knew I had gay feelings when I was 6...long before I acted on them at 21.
@ denalaurens: The brain is actually predisposed to things. Scientists aren't sure why exactly but if you take, for example, bipolar disorder, a child is more likely to have the predisposition towards this disease if parents or other in their gene pool have it or some other sort of medical illness. However, nurture plays a part in whether the predisposition becomes reality. It makes sense for most things to work like that.
I think the nature/nurture debate is irrelevant. whether you're born that way or it's a result of upbringing, the child has no say in it. neither of those options have the possibility of it being the child's choice or the child's fault, merely circumstance. so I don't see why people who are gay, or bisexual, or transsexual, or WHATEVER< shouldn't be allowed basic rights - lets face it, we're not going away any time soon.
I'm a lesbian and noone is born with emotions. Emotions come later in life. Why are gays so ashamed to admit they and we like what we do? There is no such thing as born with a pre-destined knowledge of who we want to be with. That is absurd. What about a-sexuals? I'm not ashamed to admit I am addicted to the lifestyle. Have gays become unconsciously so ashamed of themselves they have to resort to making excuses? Just wondering.
You are blinded by ignorance. It is a medical fact that babies are not born with emotions, since the brain cells are not yet created. Only the 5 senses help create the brain cells gradually, which is why babies have no motor skills or any other skills after birth. The brain tells the body what to do. Therefore, it is impossible for a baby just born to have the physical, mental and/or emotional capacity to discern anything, much less who or what s/he will become or who they'll be with. DUH!
Development of sentience starts from the moment a baby is born, but sexuality usually only gets defined once you hit puberty and start to produce sexual hormones.
This, so far, supports your theory but; what if some people are born with a predisposition in the brain which only becomes active in puberty?
I'm a lesbian and my sister is not. We have had the same upbringing, but we are biologically different. I know there are other variables, but the nature vs nurture debate boils down to those 2.
In the womb, a baby's instinct is the same as after birth, and that takes no aforethought. It is purely an involuntary reaction. There is no predispositions in the brain since it hasn't developed yet. We learn things subconsciously and consciously later in life and respond to them differently, Even identical twins are different biologically with unique qualities. Puberty doesn't define sexuality. It only marks the physical developement a person has reached in life.
@denalaurens I was merely theorising. We know very little about the workings of the human brain, and it's fairly apparent that each brain develops differently from the word go, but why?
And puberty DOES actually affect psychological development, the brain is a physical organ just like the rest of our body and the alteration of chemicals in it is what causes the change of behavior in adolescence, which ultimately is what defines identity as an adult. Perhaps sexuality is part of that process?
True. I was just pointing out that puberty doesn't really define sexuality, but yes, it does develop new chemicals that is stored in the brain and among those are hormones, estrogen and testosterone, which sort of knocks things in there out of whack temporarily. Remember what it was like as a teen, thinking you knew everything? lol, that is typical. It's the imbalance that is trying to balance out as we grow. The brain is a physical thing, yet mental and psychological one too.
We are all unique. How boring would we be if we were all the same. Let's ponder. A tree has no brain. Yet, when the roots have no water, they automatically grow deep until they hit the water they need to grow, even through concrete. Would that constitute as behavior and/or automatic reaction? There is the natural process of biologics in all of us, then there is the reaction to something learned, and we process these in different ways. We experiment and either accept or reject accordingly.
It seems that something like sexuality goes beyond the reaches of the selfish gene, a relationship with the same sex has no evolutionary advantage - unlike the tree roots, it's not a survival strategy (for want of a better word, strategy will have to do) if anything, it's counter-productive. Is it a biological flaw that evolution will trim or is it the result of a hyper-evolved mind capable of complex emotions?
I'm gonna have to take the default scientific position of "we just don't know".
Oh my god, I'm so upset right now. That man's story.. I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes, I'm in awe that he can even share that story. What a brave man.
"If I'd grown up in the country of my birth, I'd probably have been one of those kids that committed suicide." Well, thank god he didn't.....That would've been a huge loss.
Oh, jesus, that one guy's story gave me the chills....And the psychiatrist, jesus effing christ, as a gay man himself, HOW???????? People really make me sick, sometimes. The things we do to each other, because we can't stand anything that's "different"....
@LovelyLuna713 John is a great edition to the world! You are right, Gay people need to be accepted! I am straight but I have a few gay friends and if I lost one of them due to prejudice I would lose a piece of my soul. People are just people, White, Black yellow, gay or straight.
"What we do is we put you in an MRI scanner and we show you some erotica (ie: porn), and look at your brain responses to both (gay and straight porn) and what your arousal patterns look like...that is, to see whether you have gay, or straight, or bisexual arousal pattern"
"Now I'm going to ask you a few questions about your experience"
This is really edited differently for BBC America vs BBC. Missing footage and from the copy I have and different order of interviews John has with people. Still, very good program.
I love this program so much, I've watched it so many times and it never gets any less fantastic. I love how he's so set on finding it out, the bits with him and Scott are adorable and his "I'm straight!?" reaction really is priceless!
I love john and I am so proud of him for doing this, it is exactly what had to be filmed some people should show this to there parents if they have a problem with gay people.
John, I just love you. I mean, I thought you were brilliant before, with Doctor Who and Torchwood, but this just makes you my new favorite person. It drives me insane when people tell me I chose to be gay. It's like saying I chose to be tall.
biological, developmental, genetic, hereditary, cultural, environmental... who cares! (by the way, all those words have different meanings even if there is overlap)
I think I grow to love John more every time I see him in a real-life clip of something. He is always completely himself. I wish I had a friend like him - I honestly don't think I'd have the energy to actually be like him myself, lol.
He's so open and feeling and willing to learn and make people laugh. His hubby is a lucky man.
It used to be important to me that everyone knew that we were born this way-in effect saying, we can't help it, it's in our DNA. It has become less important - I KNOW it's genetic or hormonal (a new theory), but I heard a guy say recently TFB if it's something I chose - you guys will have to get over it. I liked that - even if it were a choice - deal with it.
I love John's adorable little breakdown into giggles during that phone call. The guy on the other end was so serious, just doing his job, but I would have laughed as well :D
John makes me happy to be alive. That man is such a special spark. I cannot wait to see the rest of this - thanks very much for posting... and GOOD ONYA, BARROWMAN!! Love you gobs. :D
It shows how far we have come in short space of time though. Less than 30 years ago it was completely illegal and now we have civil partnership ceremonies. That's something to be proud of but there is still a long way to go.
I wouldn't mind him spanking my ass

SCOTTISHSOULANDHEART 2 years ago 109
Of course, human sexuality is infinitely complex; human behaviour and attractions cannot be categorised so neatly.
puppetsan 2 years ago 4
@SCOTTISHSOULANDHEART Me neither, but I have a problem with this special. Which is weird, because I'm watching as a straight guy. It's fascinating to me that someone would care. I don't question where being straight comes from. I'm just attracted to women. At the same time, I see him seeking approval not as damnation on society, because we all have a right to think what we want, but on gay culture for not empowering each other to be who they are and fuck what anyone thinks.

do gays turn straight?
TheSnotrag2009 2 years ago
I don't see why not. When you fall in love you fall in love. That's how I see it at least. You never know if it's going to be a man or woman.
tobythesandwich 2 years ago 41
@tobythesandwich If falling in love were so easy... There's still so much social "programming" where men (in particular) don't embrace this aspect of themselves, even if it's part of them. They would rather live a life of "fitting in" than enjoy the life they should be living. I have met (and loved) men who live this way, masculine guys too! They just see what's being presented as "gay" stereotypes and want no part of it. If there were no gay / straight "camps" we could embrace love, NO LABELS!

I am a gay man. as a child I Never wanted to play with dolls, my ring finger is longer then my index finger, I am the gay brother of a younger hetro brother. I Know in my heart that I was born gay! Looking back,I knew I had gay feelings when I was 6...long before I acted on them at 21.
dcbornmike 2 years ago 7
@ Proxymoronis: Wonderful comment, so true!
@ stopkillingsuzie: Thanks!

6:19 welcome to humanity.
DesertSun0 2 years ago
I think the nature/nurture debate is irrelevant. whether you're born that way or it's a result of upbringing, the child has no say in it. neither of those options have the possibility of it being the child's choice or the child's fault, merely circumstance. so I don't see why people who are gay, or bisexual, or transsexual, or WHATEVER< shouldn't be allowed basic rights - lets face it, we're not going away any time soon.

Oh Dear Lord!!! How horrible was that. treated brutally for 72 hrs n then 2 find out d shrink was gay himself. My God.
sukritistraitup 2 years ago 7
I'm a lesbian and noone is born with emotions. Emotions come later in life. Why are gays so ashamed to admit they and we like what we do? There is no such thing as born with a pre-destined knowledge of who we want to be with. That is absurd. What about a-sexuals? I'm not ashamed to admit I am addicted to the lifestyle. Have gays become unconsciously so ashamed of themselves they have to resort to making excuses? Just wondering.
denalaurens 2 years ago
You? Don't know what you're talking about.
curriejean 2 years ago
You are blinded by ignorance. It is a medical fact that babies are not born with emotions, since the brain cells are not yet created. Only the 5 senses help create the brain cells gradually, which is why babies have no motor skills or any other skills after birth. The brain tells the body what to do. Therefore, it is impossible for a baby just born to have the physical, mental and/or emotional capacity to discern anything, much less who or what s/he will become or who they'll be with. DUH!
denalaurens 2 years ago
Development of sentience starts from the moment a baby is born, but sexuality usually only gets defined once you hit puberty and start to produce sexual hormones.
This, so far, supports your theory but; what if some people are born with a predisposition in the brain which only becomes active in puberty?
I'm a lesbian and my sister is not. We have had the same upbringing, but we are biologically different. I know there are other variables, but the nature vs nurture debate boils down to those 2.
TornLoveNotes 2 years ago
In the womb, a baby's instinct is the same as after birth, and that takes no aforethought. It is purely an involuntary reaction. There is no predispositions in the brain since it hasn't developed yet. We learn things subconsciously and consciously later in life and respond to them differently, Even identical twins are different biologically with unique qualities. Puberty doesn't define sexuality. It only marks the physical developement a person has reached in life.
denalaurens 2 years ago
@denalaurens I was merely theorising. We know very little about the workings of the human brain, and it's fairly apparent that each brain develops differently from the word go, but why?
And puberty DOES actually affect psychological development, the brain is a physical organ just like the rest of our body and the alteration of chemicals in it is what causes the change of behavior in adolescence, which ultimately is what defines identity as an adult. Perhaps sexuality is part of that process?
TornLoveNotes 2 years ago
The brain is a physical thing, yet mental and psychological one too.
denalaurens 2 years ago
We are all unique. How boring would we be if we were all the same. Let's ponder. A tree has no brain. Yet, when the roots have no water, they automatically grow deep until they hit the water they need to grow, even through concrete. Would that constitute as behavior and/or automatic reaction? There is the natural process of biologics in all of us, then there is the reaction to something learned, and we process these in different ways. We experiment and either accept or reject accordingly.
denalaurens 2 years ago
It seems that something like sexuality goes beyond the reaches of the selfish gene, a relationship with the same sex has no evolutionary advantage - unlike the tree roots, it's not a survival strategy (for want of a better word, strategy will have to do) if anything, it's counter-productive. Is it a biological flaw that evolution will trim or is it the result of a hyper-evolved mind capable of complex emotions?
I'm gonna have to take the default scientific position of "we just don't know".
:P

It used to be important to me that everyone knew that we were born this way-in effect saying, we can't help it, it's in our DNA. It has become less important - I KNOW it's genetic or hormonal (a new theory), but I heard a guy say recently TFB if it's something I chose - you guys will have to get over it. I liked that - even if it were a choice - deal with it.
