The thing I think is so funny about this swap is that you have a car that gets 50 miles per gallon stock with cheap gas. Then install an engine that gets the same mpg with more expensive fuel? Am I missing something? The only advantage to this swap is torque and it's a vw. I guess this was something to pass some time is my guess. I love engine swaps but you should always wash your engine parts so the swap isn't so messy.
awesome! I wanted to do something similiar with a nissan 240, most people do not know that in the early 80's datsun pickups were available with diesel! should drop right in? SD20, SD22, SD25
I love you man! diesels are great so are Hondas. I drove a Honda in Canada for 4 years and put 316,789 km on it before it started to give me any serious trouble. Keep up the good work. :-)
it seems happy in there, but seriously get some water in that thing. the diesel engine is also going to be much heavier due to the cast iron block and head, not good for manual steering! Sounds like fun though!
HHO boosters/generators are a farce! Using your engine to turn your alternator to power an hho generator that separates hydrogen and oxygen from water, then feeding the hydrogen back to the engine is silly. It's the same concept as putting a windmill generator on the roof of your car to feed electric current to the drive wheels. It has a negative net effect on mpg.
farce?? Many successful experiments on HHO proves that to be wrong. Just do the research!
CONCEPT..exactly what is is. & while it may look wayy silly. YOUR windmill thought would be what is considered HYBRIDS. So how can using less gas have negative effect ..really
& for the non-close minded.
Look at the even greater MPG acetone works in diesels at the rate of 2 oz. per 10 gallons.
i have yet to see ACTUAL test data, seriously, i had researched for about two weeks and didn't come across one person who did actual mileage testing. Scientific tests include no variables, so you have to drive the same way and same coarse every time. The issues is you always put more energy into making hydrogen that you get out. It also isn't as efficient on diesels as it in on gassers. I was only able to find one person who actually posted results, he had a 12% gain....
its a great engine it really is im a vw driver but.....why did u swap a vw engine into a honda?????????????? honda and vw are enemys lol horrible swap to do to a honda and i cant dont like how u did that either but u seem like a nice guy so im not going to bug u about it and im not even sure ur reasoning for doing this maby becuz ur doin veggy oil or u want it for the power or the gas milage

Awsome project. MPG should be insane. I'd like to do a similar swap, it would make my trips from Fl to Pa a little easier on the wallet.

I had an 87 CRX and a 00 Golf TDI. What a Frankenstein! I love it. Would like to see the end result.

no "smog" test to worry about, can run on $1/gal fuel with WVO conversion, sounds awesome, and probably only gets 42mpg with gas if it's not an HF.

I've read somewhere the VW engine weights roughtly about 275 lbs

Honda has some of the best engines in the world.
Wath is the point of placing a bad sounding, blu smoke making VW engine in it?
FrightfulAccountant 2 years ago
thats like saying why would you put a engine that will go 500,000 miles into a car with a engine that will do 300,000 maybe
mtbrs4life 2 years ago 3
Honda engines have an almost unlimited milage.
Most Hondas just disapear becaus of a very different problem:
Corrosion.
Yes, back in the 80ies, German steel was still much better then Japanese.
Motor enginering however was at the same, very good, level.
Both the enines are on itself very good.
BUT - and here is my point- The VW diesel engine is designed to have a good fuel economy while cruising.
The Honda VTEC engine is designed to race over those roads.
It's a sportscar!

I was wondering the same thing the car he got the diesel out of looked perfectly good and I can't imagine the crx is much lighter.

The stock vw had manual steering....and this powertrain is only about 50 pounds heavier then the stock honda, steering shouldn't be much of an issue.
Part III has the water in the radiator, and several other improvements along with a short test drive.

glad to see some one else accomplished this. to bad the honda is such rough condition. great work. see you at the farm, dave.

Hey dave! Been wanting to do this to my volvo is it too difficult do you think?

you're funny. vw and honda = mortal enemies lol
who cares? I know i don't.
it's the challenge of the project, and the possibility of getting insanely good gas mileage that really attracted me.
at 54 hp, it's certianly not power i was hoping to gain by swapping to a vw diesel.
jacuzzibusguy 3 years ago
100% agree...All bout the journey!
Way cool Build, hope to see more updates.
Insane MPG... would be awesome c u apply a HHO Booster to this setup. 30% increases min
