Beautiful piece :-) My choir does this every winter. Ives is my kind of musician, very experimental, but through that comes this kind of purity. I love it!
I will add my thanks for posting this, my favorite Carol. But, I have to say, Why is it unattributed? Please let me correct this ommision. It is by the iconoclastic and eccentric American Composer, Charles Ives (1874-1954). Mostly known for his ear-stretching (some would say ear-splitting) cacaphonic music, this charming little piece reveals his ability to be sweet and charming, as well.
Written in 1894 when Ives, 20, was in his first year at Yale studying with Horatio Parker. His father, band master, choir director, and cornet player, in Danbury, Ct. died in 1894. That may explain why much of the basis of this carol is "Nearer My God to Thee" (particularly evident at 1:43-1:48) to which he reverted much more directly in "Down East" (1919). At this time, Ives was also the organist at the Center Church on the Green in New Haven. He had been a paid church organist since age 14.
Charles Ives -the composer - was incredible.

Many music experts consider Ives to be the greatest American composer. I suppose that's debatable, but this IS a very lovely piece.
