I saw this movie on German television in the mid 1970s and was blown away by the story. I have been trying to get my hands on a copy since. I just watched the whole and still love it.

HOLY CRAP!!!! At 7:10 he is in Charlottesville, VA!!!! He is heading North on US 29, because behind him on the sign is US 29 Business, Emmet St. etc. The only way I recognized it was from the street signs as there are a lot more trees and buildings there now.

@thatmuse76 Thanks for that one. And that makes perfect sense: the right sign appears to read Lynchburg, the middle sign Richmond (and we later see WTVR 6 too). Looking on a map, Charlottesville sits right at the crossroads of 29 and 64. I can also report some of the other places (as I've been blogging about this movie for a while now): Myrtle Beach SC; Surf City NC and I believe somewhere in northeastern South Carolina near Marion (sign reads JCT ALT 41).

Where is he starting out from because at 6:33 he is definitely driving down Broad St. in Richmond, VA. WTVR channel 6 is still there, although the facade of the building looks much different now.
