@dswayne1 oh the pulse was already in the song when it was written. You can hear where it was implied. However it was for a new genre at the time - adult contemporary pop. So conservative was needed. Since then many singers (famous or just singing at a bar) put the soul that musicians could hear that was innate of the song. I personally like less acrobatic on this song. Listen to the lyrics, it doesn't need all that stuff Prince is doing. It is a song about resigning but not wanting to.
