@bonhobos good point, Sandinista is a classic to about any fan that has listened to it, I havnt played it in a while but if I could only have one album on a deserted island it'd be a top contender, damn I wish I'd have seen them live back in the day
The audio clips that you added kind of detract from the music. And the music is really incredible- what an intro! I really like Mick's live guitar from this era. Que viva The Clash!
Me encanta esta cancion, por el ritmo que tiene, no se puede comparar con nada de lo que actualmente se escucha, The Clash la mejor banda por siempre.
Fucking amazing how much Paul`s playing had improved since the early gigs.Nice to see that swagger and style on stage with TGTBTQ and them monkeys nowadays.
Amazing live performance! Listen to the lyrics and make you're own judgment's. On the back of my Abrams A2 tank we have the bumper sticker "Charlie Don't Surf!" My company commander cannot figure out what it means. He is part of the WPPA so he does not have a clue.
Why do Americans always assume that criticism of their culture or politics is the result of jealousy?
There are plenty of positive things to be said about the USA so it is therefore often easy to defend against criticism, but I would suggest to Braunheim that a forum relating to a song about American actions in the Vietnamese conflict is probably not the wisest place to start fighting that battle.
@unamiqueta there used to be alot of good with this country but not so much anymore because we've let big business and bankers invade washington dc it's no long a government for the people by the people but more like for the dollar and by the banker and untill that changes it will only continue to slide down hill
Note -- in the beginning of this performance -- the Clash are freely copping audio clips from well-known films of the day.
Today, the world has gotten so rigid with everyone scrambling for every scrap of coin they can steal, hoard, hide or pry loose, if anyone would attempt such a thing today, they'd be sued in half a second.
I saw The Clash during this period. They were definitely sampling from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and other soundtracks during live performances at that time. So bapyou is correct. interesting coincidence that you added audio clips they were actually using.
@bapyou The Clash did lift audio tracks starting in the early eighties. Their lyrics were supported by a lot of movies from an earlier period. Take the example of Kosmo Vinyl doing the voice over from Taxi Driver (Robert DeNiro) The whole exercise was a reflection on east & west culture. The original Clash toured the USA & Far East and made clear the culture differences between the two. Robert Duvall: Charlie Dont Surf. Marlon Brando: They wont let them write Fuck on their aeroplanes. Woo. Deep
@augie699 how is dumbass bad spelling? I was just calling you a dumbass because you think the US is the best country in the world. Thanks for posting this gem, one of their better forgotten classics .... oh well youze kiddies today dont know what you missed if you never got to see em live
Some of it is incomprehensible (as was much of Joe's live ad libbing) but the gist of it goes...'I'm gonna wear my bermuda shorts,I'm gonna get my california haircut,Im gonna burn some children to death, yes cooking, frying tonight, its a peace barbeque (?) South east asia peace barbeque, yes wearing full military outfits, the order of sir drugs...'
I saw The Clash in 1984, at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. I had just graduated High School, it was my first concert, and Red Rocks opened early, like 9:00 am. We grabbed EXCELLENT SEATS! 9th row... we played Hackey Sack all day, and drank the Wild Turkey and Coca Cola we were able to sneak in... what a great time. The Clash is AWESOME...!
It's from Clint Eastwood movie (Sudden Impact), Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver)and Robert Duvall (Apocalypse Now). Robert De Niro sample was also used on Red Angel Dragnet but it was not De Niro speaking on Combat Rock.
I guess Joe was a big fan of Taxi Driver he adopted the mohawk haircut.
Even alot of the clashes work seemed to be a realisation of Taxi Driver. I mean what dose Travis Do in the movie he takes it apon himself to clean the streets. The clash seem to do the same thing instead of complaining about the problems of the world they offer solutions
The band and joe in particular actually 'hung out' with Scorcese and De Niro for a while and even appeared in King Of Comedy (this footage was later cut but they are still in the credits and if you look closely there is about a second where they do appear
I would like to add that they also had some musical ability... I mean, the Clash was punk, and at least it was enjoyable to listen to. The Cramps, Dead Kennedy's, Meat Puppets... they had talent. I do not see that with punk today.
whre is the pUnK rOck, if...

What Joe say from 4:10 to 5:10 (ps : i'm french)
chocapic67 3 years ago

Is the talking bit from Red Angel Dragnet?
anteal231 3 years ago

The difference between The clash and "punk" bands today? The Clash actually stood for something, bands today just like to yell about stuff.

I would like to add that they also had some musical ability... I mean, the Clash was punk, and at least it was enjoyable to listen to. The Cramps, Dead Kennedy's, Meat Puppets... they had talent. I do not see that with punk today.
