I think they are both great camera's....but I purchased the G12 and am in love with this camera. One big thing for me is to be able to pop out the screen and angle the camera for the shot without having to lay down on the ground to get it.
Just a few things. I think that the P7000 has a firmware update that addresses some of the issues spoken about in the video.
And the flash on the G12 over rides what ever settings that you set, even in manual. Thus is blows out highlights in fill flash. The P7000 allows you to set the flash to what YOU want. Great video - you covered all the important features and went into great detail WITH examples. Thanks!
One question though - do you really find you need long exposures over 1/2 second at ISO 800? If you're doing long exposures aren't you after low ISO in order to minimise noise?
@silford89 hx9v, if you want a superb video quality with ok stills... canon's sx230 is about the same still quality, but hx9v has greater video, hands down... forget the s9100
now if you want a bit serious, manual camera, go with the g12 or the p7100
I don't understand...'you pick the canon over the nikon cuz the min shutter speed is 1/2 sec at ISO 3200, when the canon has a min sutter speed of a paltry 15 secs? This threw me as I need a long shutter time for night shots. So, what might be the max ISO I'd be able to set the nikon to if I used a 30 sec shutter? Are these two parameters affected in any way by Aperture when I shoot in manual mode?
Your video actually made me spent about 3 hours on the internet, digging up the features of both cameras, and I'm not quite convinced still. Quess P7000 will win, just because of the 3,5mm jack (which is important for me) and, mostly really lower price range than G12 in my country. But still don't know. Any advices?
I just got an email from Nikon announcing their new camera the P7100, it comes with a tilty screen. Thinking of this the P7100 or the S9100 (9100 has SloMo which is more important to me than manual controls), I already have a D7000 which will always be my main, looking for a pocket camera I can take with me everywhere.
@175myles The P7100 didn't do much "upgradong" from the P7000. A new tilt-out 921K screen on the back (just up and down, and NOT side to side as well) is about it. Hopefully Nikon made changes in the firmware to address the problems listed in this video and elsewhere re: the P7000. DPreview says the S9100's "only real weakness...is image quality in poor light, @ high ISO settings", & "the S9100 images at high ISO sensitivity settings do still lack detail...compared to the best...competition".
@175myles But overall they seemed to really like the S9100 at least when put up against other cameras in it's "compact travel zoom" camera class. Overall they rated it as one of the two best in their tests of that class of cameras that recently concluded, sharing top honors w/ Canon's SX230 HS, and both cameras according to them got a good run for their money at least in some areas from the Sony HX9V.
@175myles Just did a bit more research today on the P7100, & it turns out the lens, sensor, & screen are all the exact same items from last year's P7000. The only difference in the screen this year is Nikon put it on a couple of hinges to let this year's iteration "tilt" up & down but doesn't let you swing it left to right or rotate it, as I mentioned before. Hopefully they fixed the firmware & got rid of last year's operational glitches, doesn't look like Nikon's done much else w/ it.
@bohnstube, Not worried about the tilty screen, I never use the one on my Aunties D5100 or my Uncles FZ100. I'm still more interested if it does the slow motion video.
@175myles The P100, P300, P500 from Nikon, & the S9100 that you mentioned all can do slow motion video, depends on budget & the features you need. Looks like none of them will play back what you've recorded in one of the slow motion playback modes larger than VGA (640x480) at the current time, and as you probably know by now, the slower you want the slow motion playback to be, the smaller the size of the playback box will be on your screen. It'll look okay if you can put up w/ its small size.
Please, tell me which is better, in video mode, nikon P7000, Canon G12 or Lumix Lx5? I think that you are better. But Thinking in cameras, which has more definition and more manual options and better performance? Thanks.
This is a Nikon tool and not a Canon TOY. If you want to do video, buy a video camera. In very low light you don't want to use too much high ISO and then you you can use longer exposures and using a tripod for night photography...
The reason why there is so much buttons on the Nikon is to have similar layout like a DSLR on the Nikon range. The Canon doesn't have that feature though..
The next complaint might be there is no GPS on that, well geeks, it is a camera and not a GPS device....
I Just ordered the P7000 because of the stereo audio in movie mode as well as the ability to use an external mic. My primary need is for making youtube videos. Check my channel - there are over 500 vids there made with a Cannon A1100IS Power Shot. I did appreciate your review - but the stereo-audio did it for me. My guitar-vids are coming out crappy audio and that IS the reason I'm upgrading now.
Im looking for a camera to bring to gigs, cos they usually dont allow dslrs in. Most imoirtant for me is focusing in low light, and a responsive shutter- i need the pic taken when i press the button, not 10 seconds later. I was going to go with the canon, but it really sucks you cant zoom in video :/ thoughts ?
Check the video i did using this camera... tell me what you think?... (Read the description if you do watch it)... You can see what the film quality is like...
This is by far my favorite gear review site/channel. Extremely informative they ACTUALLY form an opinion when comparing two different brands/items, they don't have an obvious loyalty to a particular brand and they stray away from trying to be cute or funny. Plus their host is far from obnoxious. Great videos, great advice, 5 stars.
Mann infosyncvideos have really good reviews that I don't know what to do, should I stick with my D7000 or get a P7000 just because the technology gets better and the option to have more cash in my pockets.....such a dilemma.
I got the P7000 camera as a "gift" and in couple months I sold it to a friend who is now also complaining about the camera. It's has a "slow" start up, it freezes here and there, possibly due to the old firmware. Tested it in low light conditions and it did poorly. I'm now an owner of the Canon S95. Great compact when I don't want to lug my D700 around.
Here is what I want from the Canon G13; If they make a new G's series camera It just my ideas and opinion -1/1.3 CCD sensor -921,000 pixel screen -Microphone in jack -Larger battery -10.1 Mega pixel -ISO rating 80-32,000 -f2.0 - f5.2 -price around $549-600 What do everyone think about this? Thanks for reading and support. #77,801 03/26/2011
Just bought one of these so I can carry something lighter than my D200. Great image quality from the P7000 and the ability to shoot RAW is awesome. The downsides are the camera's confusing and laggy menu interface. I am also having problems with the camera and my SB900 flash.
Is the shutter speed lock when on different iso level really a problem? As in your example on 3200, it stops on1/2 as the longest shutter, I doubt that you will need anything more slower when you use 3200 iso..
I'm confused about you saying that there is no zoom in video on the g12. That's one of my favorite features about it is that I can zoom in all the way while I'm in video...
Video is obviouslly biased toward the Canon as he mentiones 3-4 times that dealbreaker was shutter speed of 1/2 sec @ 3200 ISO. Question- whay would you need slower speed on such high ISO anyhow? And how often one need that particular setting? Given G12 rotating Display, P7000 has bigger zoom, HIRES LCD, and many more features compared to G12. Matter of personal preferrence I guess...
I went ahead and got a P7000 just before Christmas as the firmware update was out around mid-Dec. After juggling between G12 and this, and given I am a Nikon user (D80 + accessories like SB800 flash and wireless remote), I finally decided on P7000. Suffice to say, I wasn't disappointed at all! The controls are intuitive, the transition to master this is seamless given my D80 experience. Not to mention it shares some accessories with my Nikon gears! Thank you for a good review!
@pakistheshit - wow... OK. I am an avid NIKON USER. (I own two DSLRs and a P&S) BUT...Hands down, The G12 is a superior camera from what I have seen for the types of models that are in the same class. I have seen and used many, and it is my favorite P&S camera in the lower optical zoom spectrum. In the end, it will come down to this. WHAT DO YOU LIKE? I don't feel he is being biased at all. Have you seen all his reviews? They do hours of testing on these cameras..
The Nikon looks like a cheap rip off :s anyway I find the review was a good job, it was a fair one with all the pro's and con's of both camera's. It's just a fact that Canon has a very strong brand with their Pwoershot range, and Nikon not yet have found a good answer to it.
I am wanting a great low light pro quality snapper. I have mastered the manual set for the most part and needs something for all my pocketable needs. Between Sony nex series, Canon g12/s95, Nikon p700, LUmix lx5, Lumix gf1 etc.. Which gives best versatility, good battery life, great day and night exposures, etc.?
why are people saying that this review is biased. get over it people, he's giving a review to help us out. hes simply pointing out features that one camera has that the other doesnt.
simply appreciate the feedback and find something better to do than find stupid things to say about it.
yeah thanks to him but he really confused me,.... because if i feel that his comparison was biased then i would never ever become confused,... but his comparison was honest,... and i was with the mind for p7000 ,.... but after watching this,...... :-S
Right now I'm considering buying this camera or the Canon Powershot s90 (not s95). At the moment I can get them for $498 and $333 respectively (AUD, minus shipping and SD card). While I really like the portability, features and PRICE of the s90, I wonder whether it's a worthy investment going for the p7000. The s90 has a wider aperature and is more portable (slightly), but I wonder if this is worth the extra money, with benefits like longer exposure, viewfinder and 720p video? Help appreciated.
@ProMarkChris These are two different cameras. The S90 is a great little compact, but cannot compare to the features found on the P7000. I'd also recommend looking at the Canon PowerShot G12 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5. I have a feeling if you get the S90, you'll regret not going for the more powerful option.
@ProMarkChris My last 5 cams were Canon (EOS20, XL2). Pretty loyal but replaced wife's dead digicam with p7k. Actually thought G12 was better package but need nik's longer optical zoom. Miss G12 pivot screen but shot kChrome in Nikkormat in 70s... p7k has nikk DNA (epic) and gr8 color rend. Handled all on floor at B&H and went with p7. Gr8 pics, Gr8 hands. Totally dug s95 too!! Whatever works Mark. Hey, thanks B&H for the repack. My box belonged in used dept. Spent $20K @BH (you blow).
both cameras are fantastic but your justification to go with canon as reviewer was personally biased. its a matter of personal choice what photographer really wants. nikon is more useful more me cuz it has great focal length , iso range , af in movies , flash, and many other features.aside from that few quirks could easily be fixed in firmware.prove me wrong when you said we could not live without iso dial so that shows your brand loyalty.sorry i am disappointed with review like many others.
@pakistheshit The G12 has a better ISO range--much more fine-tunable. You're right about Nikon with AF and Zoom capability in video mode, but it's auto Exposure is finicky.
That's great that the Nikon is more useful for you. It has a ton of great features, some better than the G12. If you went to our site like I recommended, you'd see that both cameras have identical scores. We just preferred the Canon because of its overall feel.
We're not telling you to buy a G12. (continued below).
@infosyncvideos We're giving you our honest opinion about two cameras that are neck and neck. Hours and hours of time and analysis went into this review, and all you can say is that we have a Canon bias? Just because I like an ISO dial does not justify brand loyalty. You really need a stronger argument here.
certainly the reviewer is grown up with canons g series really strange one thing i dont understand why would you want high iso long exposures really? you said it was deal breaker also. both cameras are great but i think your justification on nikon is biased.
When a camera can perform well at high ISO levels, I like a long shutter speed because I can expose into places most point-and-shoots can't. Now, if it was a cheap P&S, I wouldn't care as much. But a high-ISO performing champ like the P7000? Come on. Name any other P&S with an ISO cap at certain shutter speeds.
Also, go to our site and look at our samples of the G12 shot in pitch black with long shutter speeds and high ISOs. You'll rethink that comment.
@infosyncvideos I agree with Pak. Why would you want to shoot at high ISO with a slow shutter speed? To retain detail and reduce noise in the photograph, you want to shoot at either ISO 200 or ISO 400 with a long shutter speed. Does the P7000 let you do a longer exposure (e.g. 30 seconds at f/8 and ISO 200 or 400)? If it lets you do long exposures at low ISO, then your "deal-breaker" doesn't matter whatsoever, because you'll be putting it on a tripod anyway.

450USD nikon p7000 vs 540USD canon g12?
Shuky92 1 year ago
Is the shutter speed lock when on different iso level really a problem? As in your example on 3200, it stops on1/2 as the longest shutter, I doubt that you will need anything more slower when you use 3200 iso..

I'm confused about you saying that there is no zoom in video on the g12. That's one of my favorite features about it is that I can zoom in all the way while I'm in video...

@meeyahmiyah No optical zoom, only digital.

Which would you get as a review due to your familarity, the G12 or this camera?
cliffcox66 1 year ago
Video is obviouslly biased toward the Canon as he mentiones 3-4 times that dealbreaker was shutter speed of 1/2 sec @ 3200 ISO. Question- whay would you need slower speed on such high ISO anyhow? And how often one need that particular setting? Given G12 rotating Display, P7000 has bigger zoom, HIRES LCD, and many more features compared to G12. Matter of personal preferrence I guess...
H078 1 year ago
why in the world do you have your ISO jacked up for a long exposure? that would make awful noise anyways. high ISO with long exposure just sucks...

Thank you for a good review!
hltang 1 year ago

Oh yeah, nice dog man!

I am wanting a great low light pro quality snapper. I have mastered the manual set for the most part and needs something for all my pocketable needs. Between Sony nex series, Canon g12/s95, Nikon p700, LUmix lx5, Lumix gf1 etc.. Which gives best versatility, good battery life, great day and night exposures, etc.?

sorry if i missed it in the video, but is there manual focus on video mode for this camera?

why are people saying that this review is biased. get over it people, he's giving a review to help us out. hes simply pointing out features that one camera has that the other doesnt.
simply appreciate the feedback and find something better to do than find stupid things to say about it.

yeah thanks to him but he really confused me,.... because if i feel that his comparison was biased then i would never ever become confused,... but his comparison was honest,... and i was with the mind for p7000 ,.... but after watching this,......

ProMarkChris 1 year ago
@ProMarkChris These are two different cameras. The S90 is a great little compact, but cannot compare to the features found on the P7000. I'd also recommend looking at the Canon PowerShot G12 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5. I have a feeling if you get the S90, you'll regret not going for the more powerful option.
infosyncvideos 1 year ago
Spent $20K @BH (you blow).

pogi09282805724 1 year ago
both cameras are fantastic but your justification to go with canon as reviewer was personally biased. its a matter of personal choice what photographer really wants. nikon is more useful more me cuz it has great focal length , iso range , af in movies , flash, and many other features.aside from that few quirks could easily be fixed in firmware.prove me wrong when you said we could not live without iso dial so that shows your brand loyalty.sorry i am disappointed with review like many others.
pakistheshit 1 year ago
@pakistheshit The G12 has a better ISO range--much more fine-tunable. You're right about Nikon with AF and Zoom capability in video mode, but it's auto Exposure is finicky.
That's great that the Nikon is more useful for you. It has a ton of great features, some better than the G12. If you went to our site like I recommended, you'd see that both cameras have identical scores. We just preferred the Canon because of its overall feel.
We're not telling you to buy a G12. (continued below).
infosyncvideos 1 year ago
@infosyncvideos We're giving you our honest opinion about two cameras that are neck and neck. Hours and hours of time and analysis went into this review, and all you can say is that we have a Canon bias? Just because I like an ISO dial does not justify brand loyalty. You really need a stronger argument here.

Thanks for helping me to make a choice. I go for Canon G12.
siau2525 1 year ago
certainly the reviewer is grown up with canons g series really strange one thing i dont understand why would you want high iso long exposures really? you said it was deal breaker also. both cameras are great but i think your justification on nikon is biased.
pakistheshit 1 year ago
@pakistheshit Here we go!
You'll rethink that comment.
infosyncvideos 1 year ago 6
@infosyncvideos I agree with Pak. Why would you want to shoot at high ISO with a slow shutter speed? To retain detail and reduce noise in the photograph, you want to shoot at either ISO 200 or ISO 400 with a long shutter speed. Does the P7000 let you do a longer exposure (e.g. 30 seconds at f/8 and ISO 200 or 400)? If it lets you do long exposures at low ISO, then your "deal-breaker" doesn't matter whatsoever, because you'll be putting it on a tripod anyway.
