Okay guys heres my theory, after the subway you see the army dude say "Hammerdown Situation". This means that if the monster couldnt be killed, they would destroy manhattan, and a nuke is the only thing big enough to destroy it.

After the copter crashes you hear 15 minutes to TOD, this means time of detonation. 15 minutes is not long enough to escape a nuclear blast on foot. you see the tape get covered in rubble, meaning the tape COULD survive, but humans would die from the radiation in minutes
