I am an egg producer in Montana. I can assure everyone that this is just propaganda. There is virtually no disease from birds who Graze in an actual pasture. In the natural environment they get enough of the right nutrients to have an excellent immune system. I don't even have a feed bill and my chickens NEVER die from disease. I mean in decades of chicken rearing I have NEVER lost a single bird to any disease. This disease situation is created by the torturous methods used in today's industry.
@jamaicajaz Wow! You must live in some secret utopian region of Montana! NO feed bill? Please disclose the breed of bird you have that can subsist without feed in the winter, or in warmer months for that matter. No "disease situation"? hmmm...What about coccidiosis, which yes, I realize is a parasite? What is you "magic" cure for that? Next time me and my friends go snowmobiling in Montana we will surely watch out for those "magic" birds you have, wouldn't want to be killed by one...
There has got to be a balance with "hen safety" and "ecoli run rampant" HAHA! We have our urban backyard hens (5) and I think more Americans should get back to self sustainability. Why can't apartment's and HOAs offer chicken runs for interested persons? So, a chicken is lost to a hawk, big deal. Better to have healthy, happy egg layers than caged or 'free range" million-hen strong farms.
The general public needs to understand that farmers put chickens in cages because it is the most economical/ cheapest way to produce eggs. That translates to cheap eggs in the grocery store.....which consumers love. So please do not blame the farmer, look at your own consumption practices.
@MrDougwallace "grow up" - how about you "evolve" - "a human being like God intended" what world are you living in? Firstly I do not believe in God, so your comment doesn't apply to me. I do not partake in animal cruelty knowingly. And please educate yourself further - I own a vegan wholefoods shop, this means we stock foods, cosmetics, medicines and vitamins which ARE NOT made from animal products, nor are they tested on animals. ..things like this do exist. And, yes it is simple.
Interesting some think this is"staged" because it's clean. Can't possibly be that the dirty nasty ones are staged because this is normal?! There are options and in fact not all areas have a market for outdoor birds. This is an unfortunate truth as I *have* outdoor birds and even at $2/dozen same as the store people will not by action detour to buy them! As "everyone knows" most don't ever go onto a poultry farm - they make their assumptions on activist videos. Truth prevails
facts is birds produce healthy eggs if raised as GOd intended,,as FREE ROAMING CAGE FREE, ,,,this over pop world by 1000X's too many people, gives us these HIGHLY TOXIC EGGS, with absoluetly no nutritional value...
@mariabest1 highly toxic eggs? have any proof or that rediculous claim? also, why do you see a discussion between two people who have experience raising hens as "full of lies and false info."? Cite a source from a university that dispells anything that is stated in this video is false. Yes, I guess in your view there are too many humans in this world, so I guess not only do you dislike animals, but promote human mass suicide as well. Maybe we need another Jamestown? Maybe you could start 1?
Erm? hello? is this video taking the piss? Wooh, yeah great, lovely clean chickens - cant freakin move!!! does the world know what the answer is to animal cruelty??
DONT EAT ANIMAL PRODUCTS - GO vegan - its SOOO simple, we are so not evolved as beings,,,,we are constantly justifying animals conditions..why are people kidding themselves constantly??
@emmz1 You are aware there is no such thing as vegan correct just about everything is somehow made from animals raised on a farm makeup, antifreeze, fleece, vitamins, glass, medicines, adhesives etc. need i go on the list is endless so grow up and become a human being like God intended and eat right and no that doesn't mean only veggies become educated before stating how simple doing something is please
Not only is the info presented here crap, but have a look at the brown hens shown. These are free range hens??? I keep 20 laying hens (enough to supply my family and several neighbors with eggs), and they live on over an acre of NATURE. That is to say they have access to the things they really need; grasses, legumes, (and don't forget their favorite..dandilions!), and all sorts of worms, grubs, bugs of all kinds. THAT is free range. As far as your "condos" go...shame on you! Pure staged BS!!
I agree, bunk. Birds that crowded are not happy birds. More people should keep chickens. I have 6 hens, only 1/4 acre. They have a 32sqft coop, and 92sqft run.
This is pure bunk right! I mean I hate to believe that the evil American can produce a product that can feed the world! I say we do it the old way make it expensive and starve all those pesky third world countries so we can continue to be the arrogant selfish Americans!
One other thing, hens are not vegetarians. They need to have access to grubs, worms and plants--not to mention fresh air.
I saw a video on Oprah, who was hosting Michael Pollen, author of Food Rules, In Defense of Food and The Omnivore's Dilemma. The video featured hens who were genetically engineered to have big breasts because of the popularity of breast meat.
The poor hens were so breast-heavy they couldn't stand up. This made me a dedicated eater of pastured and grass-fed meats.
You are so right. Chickens do produce manure and on this particular farm it is really cool because that manure drops through the cage to a belt where it was taken away, dried and then sold to local farmers who apply it to their fields to help their crops grow. In some cases those crops are then fed back to the chickens. We call that the cycle of life and it is a perfect example of how sustainable our modern food production system really is.
@FeedstuffsFoodLink you still house the poor animals stuffed together in a tiny cage....free range eggs cost only 30cents more per dozen, there is no reason for this cruelty to continue. Ban caged farming, barn raised at minimum
At first I couldn't believe that you didn't think chickens were better off outside, but then I remembered that your first concern is making money, NOT the well being of the chickens. I guess we should start keeping humans in cages too so we can protect them from diseases and preditors too!
So this is what all the "lucky" female chicks wind up doing - living their entire lives in a cage. Perhaps it would be better to be born a male chick and mascerated within a day? And "protection" from predators? Let's not forget who the biggest, badest predator to these hens is: it's US!
How did you get your hens so clean? I think this is staged...none of the farms I've seen have ever looked like this. And did you clean those eggs under the cages before you shot the video? Fresh eggs don't look like that before their cleaned.
Most farms shown on the media are from organizations that would like to cast animal production in a negative connotation. They find the worst of the worst and attempt to infer that all farms are in such poor condition. Most farmers take great care in producing livestock in a manner that is safe and clean for the animal as this allows the animals to stay healthier and be more profitable for the farmer. Most farmers are farmers because they like to care for animals.
