I made these and they were sooooooo good. I didn't add the wine though because I don't drink. Thank you! They were super easy to make, but took a while.
@ViolinTreelet Thank you so much for trying these and commenting. I'm sorry I didn't answer your other question (below) in time - you could just leave them out, or substitute some cabbage or bean sprouts as well :)
is wheat flour the same as wheat starch?.i've done some research and a lot of people say they are actually different. i know i can find wheat flour in american supermarkets but could i find wheat starch in them?
@wickedlady4180 I read elsewhere that you should use wheat starch(also known as tang flour) which is different from wheat flour. Available from Chinese supermarkets.
@danie8706 The wonton wrappers are much thicker than this dough. You could use the filling from this recipe and the wonton wrappers to make wontons; and instead of steaming them, either boil or fry them :)
Wonton wrapper has egg in it. It's a different kind of wrapper. It's mostly for boiling. When you steam it, it's kind of chewier. But why not. I did try once, it was not as good, but much easier.
@drweihs Stir fry oil actually has the flavors of ginger, garlic and onion infused in it; so this small amount adds a lot of flavor to the shrimp mixture. The only substitute would be to chop up some fresh garlic, ginger and onion and add it to the mixture :)
Oh man this looks good... I love shrimp dumplings. Is there anything I could use instead of shaohsing wine, or do I need to go to an Asian market or something?
@SuperElninotorres Thanks, but I am married. My wedding band consists of 2 interlocking bands made with diamonds and I don't want to get food into it, so I don't wear it when I cook :)
@AsianCookingmadeEasy What a lucky man a beautiul wife who can cook as well ha your wedding ring sounds lovely. My favourites are 潮州粉果 chiu-chau fun guo, 鍋貼, woh tip and 魚鬚 yau yu sou. Im going to see if i can find you cooking it :)
i love the recipe Lela ! thanks for teaching me. been eating a lot of this here in the Philippines in one of the fastfood chains. here, it is known as Ha Kao
I actually don't recommend canned bamboo (if you can help it), some brands leave a nasty smell or after taste. To get a more authentic wrapper, I'd recommend tapioca or potato starch
These are much better if made with tapioca starch, not wheat flour. Then you will get nice white and very translucent results. Also, if you don't chop up the shrimp it is more beautiful - you can see the entire shrimp through the skin with the bamboo and bits of green onion.
In restaurant menus it's spelled, "har gow," but I'm used to pronouncing it, "ha gow." That would be like Coach K; Coach Krzyzewski, pronounced shey-CHEF-ski.
I'd eat that whole plate with thin soy sauce and chili garlic sauce, or sambal oelek. Cook me some pot stickers, too!
Har Gow or 虾饺. It's actually in Cantonese and not Mandarin. it's just so weird hearing an ABC say it as oppose to hearing the authentic Cantonese say it.
But I wanted say that it's Haa like a laugh and not Har cus how you say it is like "hardy har har." ):
(Not to offend anyone or you, It's how I learned it was called as a child and up to today.) Sorry it just irritates me when someone meant to say it seriously. But when it comes to jokes, I tend to not mind.
Har Gow is without a doubt my favorite treat. Moved away from large city and lost access to great Dim Sum in Vancouver BC Canada. I have been trying to gather ingrediants for the last few weeks. Just running into difficulty getting hold of wrap ingredeants. Also hope to make Sticky rice, once I find the rice and Dried Lotus leaves, lol.
Enjoyed you video. Thanks for all your efforts in providing all your video's.

Usagii1996 7 months ago in playlist Dim Sum Recipes
@Usagii1996 If you want to use the wonton wrappers and boil them like wontons, just let them boil for about 8 to 10 minutes :)

is it ok to use all purpose flour???
NabilahYen 1 year ago
@NabilahYen When she says wheat flour, I think she does mean APF, which is wheat, as opposed to rice flour or something else like wheat starch.

what is mean 1 cup how many grams or onz???
hanyan1209 1 year ago
i like your mini rolling pin , haha xD cute
just one question though, i thought that the shell of the har gow was translucent?
geezermeezer 1 year ago
does all purpose flour work too?
girlymoomoo888 1 year ago
@girlymoomoo888 - All purpose flour will generate too much gluten, so the dough will be tougher. Also APF will not give the translucence.
