  • I made these and they were sooooooo good. I didn't add the wine though because I don't drink. Thank you! They were super easy to make, but took a while.

  • @ViolinTreelet Thank you so much for trying these and commenting. I'm sorry I didn't answer your other question (below) in time - you could just leave them out, or substitute some cabbage or bean sprouts as well :)

  • @AsianCookingmadeEasy Thanks for the suggestions. I bought bamboo shoots and used them. They tasted good, but smelled horrible.

  • Is it okay if I don't use bamboo shoots? What can I use as an alternative that's usually available in kitchens?

  • cute rolling pin!

  • please make some cream cheese wonton or crab puffs..

  • @78karito Hi, I have a crab rangoon recipe that has cream cheese and crab in it found here youtube (dot) com /watch?v=PYApf9Om3MQ

  • Thanks! It looks and sounds easy enough, but I know it's not. I will definitely try this anyone. You explained it very well.

  • Dear Lila, you are soooo slim...why not eat a wee bit more of the viands you usually cook here for us

    ; - )

    Luv from all of us.

  • If I use wonton wrappers and boil them... How long do I have to boil them then? :)

  • @Usagii1996 If you want to use the wonton wrappers and boil them like wontons, just let them boil for about 8 to 10 minutes :)

  • @AsianCookingmadeEasy Thank you a lot for the answer! We gave it a try, and it was a huge success ^_^

  • @Usagii1996 Thank you so much for trying this! :)

  • is there a substitution for the wine?

  • @niteaway You can substitute dry cooking sherry for chinese rice wine.

  • I'm chinese and i loveee har gao! I could just eat har gaos non stop in a dim sum buffet

  • i will eat 100 in a row. thanks for the video.

  • actually it supposed call hak kau. because it's origin name. but what you're doing is nice. thank you.

  • @molceonly uh...har gau isn't correct, i'll agree with you on that. but hak kau? that's a bit off as well...

  • no offense meant at all of course, but im pretty confident of my cantonese.

  • is wheat flour the same as wheat starch?.i've done some research and a lot of people say they are actually different. i know i can find wheat flour in american supermarkets but could i find wheat starch in them?

  • @spacegirlz Non glutinous wheat flour is what I used which is the same as wheat starch :)

  • i dont wanna put the wine is that ok? ^^

  • @ruthsaromo1 Yes you can leave it out if you wish :)

  • @AsianCookingmadeEasy okies :)

    tn q for responding :D

  • OHHHHHHHH man there are "thats what she said" jokes all over this vid

  • my fav dim sum.. :)

  • Isn't har gow made with rice flour?

  • @wickedlady4180 I read elsewhere that you should use wheat starch(also known as tang flour) which is different from wheat flour. Available from Chinese supermarkets.

  • hi what can i substitute for the wine?

  • and can shoa hsing wine be replace with something else???....other than sherry????

  • is it ok to use all purpose flour???

  • @NabilahYen When she says wheat flour, I think she does mean APF, which is wheat, as opposed to rice flour or something else like wheat starch.

  • what is mean 1 cup how many grams or onz???

  • i like your mini rolling pin , haha xD cute

just one question though, i thought that the shell of the har gow was translucent?

  • does all purpose flour work too?

  • @girlymoomoo888 - All purpose flour will generate too much gluten, so the dough will be tougher. Also APF will not give the translucence.

  • can you use wonton wrappers instead of the dough?

  • @danie8706 The wonton wrappers are much thicker than this dough. You could use the filling from this recipe and the wonton wrappers to make wontons; and instead of steaming them, either boil or fry them :)

  • @danie8706

Wonton wrapper has egg in it. It's a different kind of wrapper. It's mostly for boiling. When you steam it, it's kind of chewier. But why not. I did try once, it was not as good, but much easier.

  • can you use a bamboo steamer instead?

  • @drweihs You can as long as there is a plate or tray inside that can be greased so that the har gow do not stick to the bottom :)

  • is there a substitute for stir fry oil?

  • @drweihs Stir fry oil actually has the flavors of ginger, garlic and onion infused in it; so this small amount adds a lot of flavor to the shrimp mixture. The only substitute would be to chop up some fresh garlic, ginger and onion and add it to the mixture :)

  • hi i like your cooking very doable. but with what can i replace the wine ?

  • @7obeQatar The best substitute in this recipe would be cooking sherry, but you can also use rice vinegar as well :)

  • Oh man this looks good... I love shrimp dumplings. Is there anything I could use instead of shaohsing wine, or do I need to go to an Asian market or something?

  • @fwoshi You can use cooking sherry in place of the shao hsing wine :)

  • @AsianCookingmadeEasy Thank you!

  • omg i'm hungry

  • Thank you Lela, are you using wheat starch or whole wheat flour? There's a huge difference between the two.

  • hi , Do you think you can make me a vegetarian recipe for the hargow ;) i felt like eating but i am a vegetarian ...

  • @chingie106 Yes I will put this on my request list :)

  • what is wheat flour? Is it just plain flour of something

  • is this your own recipe?

  • @mizzyAt Yes, why?

  • @AsianCookingmadeEasy just curious

  • Lela I didnt see no wedding ring. Im a pretty young chinese boy, can I have a date :)

  • @SuperElninotorres Thanks, but I am married. My wedding band consists of 2 interlocking bands made with diamonds and I don't want to get food into it, so I don't wear it when I cook :)

  • @AsianCookingmadeEasy What a lucky man a beautiul wife who can cook as well ha your wedding ring sounds lovely. My favourites are 潮州粉果 chiu-chau fun guo, 鍋貼, woh tip and 魚鬚 yau yu sou. Im going to see if i can find you cooking it :)

  • i love the recipe Lela ! thanks for teaching me. been eating a lot of this here in the Philippines in one of the fastfood chains. here, it is known as Ha Kao

  • Do we need to use bamboo?

  • @jam101606 No, you don't have to use the bamboo if you don't wish too :)

  • I actually don't recommend canned bamboo (if you can help it), some brands leave a nasty smell or after taste. To get a more authentic wrapper, I'd recommend tapioca or potato starch

  • Ummm Its Ha Gow not har gow. But still gud job. I soo wanna b a cook when i grow up lol But only 14 i can still wait. But yah

  • hi. Is the wheat flour same as all purpose flour?

  • shouldnt that be wheat starch ?

  • Not for this recipe - you can use a mix of wheat and tapioca starch; or a mix of wheat starch and waterchestnut flour as well :)

  • looks kinda like gyoza

  • These are much better if made with tapioca starch, not wheat flour. Then you will get nice white and very translucent results. Also, if you don't chop up the shrimp it is more beautiful - you can see the entire shrimp through the skin with the bamboo and bits of green onion.

  • Happy New Year. I love dumplings. Thanks for the recipe. But where is the sauce?....not sure if you made a separate video for dumpling sauce.

  • Lela makes an appearance happy new year!

  • Thanks again for the vid! Happy New Year!

  • Looks scrumptious!! Thx for the post.

  • lol, the shape reminds me of gow gee

  • In restaurant menus it's spelled, "har gow," but I'm used to pronouncing it, "ha gow." That would be like Coach K; Coach Krzyzewski, pronounced shey-CHEF-ski.

I'd eat that whole plate with thin soy sauce and chili garlic sauce, or sambal oelek. Cook me some pot stickers, too!

  • Har Gow or 虾饺. It's actually in Cantonese and not Mandarin. it's just so weird hearing an ABC say it as oppose to hearing the authentic Cantonese say it.

  • Thanks for teaching!

But I wanted say that it's Haa like a laugh and not Har cus how you say it is like "hardy har har." ):

(Not to offend anyone or you, It's how I learned it was called as a child and up to today.) Sorry it just irritates me when someone meant to say it seriously. But when it comes to jokes, I tend to not mind.

  • I've actually heard it pronounced both. My grandparents are Mandarin and I don't speak it so I don't know exactly what the equivalent would be :)

  • I see. Thanks for sharing! ,,^ ^,,

  • SUPER YAY!!

  • mmm looks tasty

  • Har Gow is without a doubt my favorite treat. Moved away from large city and lost access to great Dim Sum in Vancouver BC Canada. I have been trying to gather ingrediants for the last few weeks. Just running into difficulty getting hold of wrap ingredeants. Also hope to make Sticky rice, once I find the rice and Dried Lotus leaves, lol.

Enjoyed you video. Thanks for all your efforts in providing all your video's.

  • is har gow a chinese word?

  • @sofiaswim Yes. Har mean prawn or shrimp. Har gow is a shrimp/prawn dumpling.

  • Thank you for this great recipe. I always get these when i have dim sum.

  • great stuff thanks

  • YES!!!! Har Gaw, thanks Lela! Btw, what kind of exhaust is that in your kitchen?

  • Thanks for watching, and the exhaust is a GE Monogram :)
