time after time is a song so special... it's impossible to compare it with another song... it's easy, quiet, but powerful and... I can't find the words, damn!
The part about the water tower refers to a certain naked Mr. Mills being caught with a certain young lady on top of a water tower. Mike is a real ladies man and girls just love him.
what a great debate to have, which era of rem is best. rem is a band that has obviously spoken to generations x and y and touched them deeply in their lives. Not many other bands, icons or artists can do this, so please can we agree to love rem and each other without having to put down each other yet still have a healthy debate to show how rem has had an influence on our lives.
In my opinion, R.E.M. made two of the greatest albums of the 80s with Murmur and Reckoning. Every single song on those albums are extraordinary. I think Life's Rich Pageant and Document are high class albums, but not as great as Murmur and Reckoning
We all must agree that R.E.M is one of the great alternative bands of any era.
@Crede06 It continued to blow me away how a group of musicians could turn out album after album with not one single bad song in the lot.And then they released Green and made up for it all.Ah well still one of America's best working class bands.
Sorry but I could never agree with you on that. I can understand why you might not like a lot of their more recent music but to wish for them to split up is nonsensical.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No it's not nonsensical. R.E.M. were a brilliant band and instead of releasing slushy, irrelevant MOR like Around the Sun and Reveal they should have done the proper thing and gone their separate ways instead of sullying their reputation.
couldnt agree more about New adventures and Accelerate i would add UP into the list of fantasic albums post 94. I dont like monster too much other than strange currencies, cirus envy and you
Up has it's moments but is very inconsistent if you ask me. The majority of REM's albums are superb, but Up, Reveal and Around the Sun were something of a low point in their career.
for me around the sun was one of the best in terms that a lot of the songs spoke to me during a break up that i was having in my life and meeting some one new and that album came out during that period of my life especially leaving new york and the outsiders.
I'd happily say Leaving New York is one of the best songs ever written, don't like the album as a whole but if it does something for you - great, nothing wrong with that at all!
If you honestly believe that accelerate is better than the IRS era albums, you're the muppet. It's a decent album but nothing compared to their best albums
utter rubbish . The IRS albums are patchy but have good moments. They Dont push the boundaries like accelerate. I love reckoning and think murmur, pagent and document are good. But They dont grow on me as much as songs like mr richards, sing for the sub, accelerate houston and until the day is done.
R.E.M. basically invented alternative rock with Murmur. Its one of the most influential and important albums of the 80's, along with Reckoning. Accelerate is basically R.E.M. doing a retread of their old sound. Elements of everything in Accelerate can be heard in Lifes Rich Pageant, Automatic, Out of Time etc.. It is in NO way pushing the boundaries. That was an ignorant comment, to say the least. Youre entitled to your opinion , even if it is complete bullshit. Ok, i'm done debating this now.
That is Utter utter nonsense and you even know it. Murmur is a collection of similar sounding songs which for their time(i only heard them in 1995)(born 1982) were groundbreaking. The fact which it beat thriller to awards shows how highly it is thought of. HOWEVER as a REM fan of 15 years who has listened to ever album 200 times plus easy i simply dont agree. They have ALWAYS changed album to album. Look at AFTP to monster to NAIFI to UP to Reveal to ATS to Accelerate.
Tell me then which song sound like LWITBR- MSW- SS- hollow man- houston- accelerate- utdid- mr richards- sfts- horse- dj- end of the world ok done last one for you! I love reckoning but i think its basically murmur done better.
WOW! How lovely to see them in their young innocent life. Well-behaved good kids ... that is ... R.E.M. in the making. Great! Thanks for posting. Godspeed!

one of my favorite REM songs. Wish Michael Stipe's voice was louder on this version. On the album, he soars on this one.

I love the sound of both Mike and Peter playing acoustic guitars, no bass. I think they should try this more often in acoustic settings...

so when did michael stype decide to start singing in that high, gurggling annoying voice?

There were two bands: REM before document and REM after Document. I prefer the former.

You can see this and other songs from that performance on the IRS Years DVD thingy.
I wish they'd split up a long time ago because they used to be so great...

OK then... what about Monster, New Adventures and Accelerate?
Three great albums. New Adventures is REMs best. Their only 80s album that comes close is Life's Rich Pageant.
To say that REM should have split up is nonsensical... end of.

@TheGargantuanSock No way there 80's stuff was way better and up until automatic for the people, later stuff wasn't so good. :)
