you could design it better than that, try having the peddle fold back to body of the case, that could then be strapped down and covered by spring loaded slide back covers, that would ensure the bike was all as one the rider is less likley to loose parts other than that its ace
well i sure love the idea-i've had a similar idea in my head for a few years. all they need to do is simply iron some bugs out to make it simpler to transform it (and pls give it good suspension for those tiny wheels) and they have a hit.
If only on paper, it is feasible, but the suitcase will have to be longer & higher. The main reason is the two retracted wheels must be in line. On the other hand, if the wheels can be made to be OFFSET but parallel, then the case size can remain as is.
This bike is more than a computer animation - it exists. At lease 10 have been built and they have parts to make 50 or more immediately but the company has yet to begin selling them. As to why, your guess is as good as mine. The design does require a lot of steps to fold the bike though.
It looks really slow... what we need to do is use bikes and similar transportation to chill out the gas situation. They're using it as an excuse to starve us by hiking up food products, etc., when we still have tons of oil left and it's price (as well as everything else's price) depends on the value of the American Dollar... which loses value for some reason every time we go to war.
True, Bike Friday HAS been making bikes that can be placed in a suitcase, with the suitcase turning into a trailer pulled behind the bike. The difference is that the Suitcase Bike and the suitcase are one in the same, resulting in far less time to convert the bike for transporting it or storage.
In the UK, we have a folding bike called a Brompton, that seems to unfold in about fifteen to twenty seconds. Way faster and simpler than this. I haven't got one but they're very popular.
They look like they've got bigger wheels as well.
This concept is ill thought-out, too complicated and parts could get lost. Rated 'Poor'.
Brompton's are great folding bikes; nevertheless, most all airlines (and some rail lines)still require a Brompton or any other folding bike to be placed in a case of some sort.
Yes, the Suitcase Folding Bike is complicated ; it's also an evolutionary step towards a more portable and usable folding bike.
Just found this video and sorry, but this is a joke... It's way to complicated, looks ugly and I've folded my brompton faster AND packed into a case than in this animation.
Most important, folders like Brompton, Birdy or GoBike are good Bikes. This Thing with it's mini-wheels?
Sorry but this is a solution for a problem that didn't existed in the first place.
Brompton's fold really fast AND roll when folded but most cost over $1200. The Suitcase bike is supposed to cost less than half that; it also has no sharp edges to catch on things (important when taking a bike into a confined area such as a subway car or bus).
Actually it's around 1000 Euro, so the price is surely an argument (as always....). The Brompton ist small enough for confined areas, but surely a suitcase-bike should also do nicely. But will it be are fully useable bike? Besides weight and ease of folding this is the important factor. But I look forward to see a review of this bike if hits production.
Oops. It's been awhile since I checked the exchange rate. That makes the Brompton cost over $1500 USD. Ouch.
The Suitcase Bike is rather complicated to fold and this is a problem. Still, if the bike ends up weighing in at 10 kg and has a decent ride, there is a market for a bike like this.
I like the video, but this design doesn't seem practical. 8-9 steps to fold or unfold it? The folding procedure has to be simplified a lot before the general public will be interested in using this.
Sun sent the owner's manual to me and I was astonished by all the steps needed to fold the bike. Is it an interesting invention? Absolutely. Is it ready for prime time? Hmmmm...
It's not fast , & 90pct of the time you're lugging it, folding it, unfoldng it, looking for a place to put it, getting it broken, getting it fixed, or getting it stolen. Did I mention that it looks painfully slow? I've got an idea: It's cheap, easy, simple & safe: ///Walking///. I'm thinking a briskly paced walk will out-speed this gizmo, & when you get where you're going, you're done.
you would use this when you bike down a big hill to the grocery store, then need to cab it back because you bought too much, just stuff your bike in the trunk with your eggs and bread!
In coordination with riding mass transit (getting to/from the bus stop, subway, etc.), in situations where building managers restrict bringing standard bicycles inside or for bicycling while traveling (suitcase bike meets airline requirements as a checked bag).
Hmmm - I disagree. An errand that may take 30 minutes to walk can easily be done in 12-15 minutes by bike. Folding the suitcase bike to take inside a store should take less time than locking a standard bike with a cable lock and definitely less time than walking.
it looks cool, but i think it's primary function- compact size, is a non-existing problem. especially when the weight is likely to be heavy (metal not carbon fiber) and the wheels small, it seems rather pointless.
This bike is designed for cyclists that have not been allowed to take their standard bike on mass transit, into their office, etc. or that want to keep their clothes clean when commuting by bike. Though this may not apply to you, there is definitely a need.
I've heard similar comments regarding the A-Bike; however, the Suitcase Bike has larger wheels and a rear shock absorber so it should be able for riders to use it on typical city streets.
here's an idea... make the suitcase more attractive (perhaps smaller if possible) and for God sake the bike looks terribly ugly... it's like a 5 year old's bike....
I'm sure that they'll be modifying the product in the future; however, my understanding is that the factory is looking to bring to market a product that is reliable/functional and reasonably priced. Surely, they'll be taking into account valuable feedback from potential users such as all the folks here at YouTube that have taken the time to comment.
Good idea, but I think it could use some more time of thinking. Cause the pedals looked like they came off easily, someone; such as a young adult. could just as easily off.
I am also curious about the removeable pedals & seat - how they're secured both in the riding position and when folded & whether the cranks can possibly slip off when riding. The only way to know is to see/ride the bike when the prototype arrives & report on the results.
Nice idea, the only issues I would have are the loose pieces; pedals and seat. I would focus on having the pedals fold into case. Possibly with the seat you can have that double as a cases handle. The seat folds in half upwards making the handle. Upon opening the seat it is a clover shape. Don't forget to send props to MovieDemocom if you incorporate these ideas ;)
Brilliant idea, I can definitely see that going places, especially in Japan and China and The Netherlands. What happens if the chain comes off though?
Would it be gay if the suitcase was one big print of an American flag or some other image or is it just that the bike is different? With gas now at $4.35/gal in some parts of the country and prices on the rise, if the bike lets people get on with their lives despite high fuel costs, I say put a custom paint job on it.
Good idea, but I'm sure the tiny wheels would lead to frustrating wheel resistance for longer trips and a rough ride for poorly maintained roads. Any models in the works with a larger diameter tire?
I think the factory is concentrating on getting the current product launched and moving forward once they get more feedback from users. As a long distance cyclist, I'd like to see a recumbent that folds into a suitcase, with the whole package costing under $500.
this looks cool but haveing to take the peddles and seat off and on isn't that great if you make it so you dont have to take the seat and peddles off they i would consider buying it
Fitting the Suitcase Bike in a school locker ... I'd rather not try but I could see taking it on the bus, subway, etc., riding it, then folding up the bike and rolling it down the corridor to my cubicle at work. I could also see checking the bike as luggage on a plane or train for riding at my destination.
Working with a suitcase , most likely working in cities where people will take public transport instead of using this ( traffic too much and hence, dangerous and waste time to use bike to travel) , and its a suitcase, but it cant contain any things except the bike's parts? i dun see the point-.-"
The Suitcase Bike is designed to work with public transport, not replace it. If walking to a transit stop takes 10+ minutes, people avoid mass transit. The Suitcase Bike changes that. Transit stops up to an hour away by walking can be just 10-15 minutes away by bike and the Suitcase Bike avoids issues related to taking other full size bikes or folding bikes on mass transit (such as no bike rack, full bike rack or being denied boarding b/c pedals, handlebars or other sharp edges are protruding).
looks like quit a nice gadget..although some glitches are that the seat and pedals could be lost then ur buggered =P looks quit heavy too and what if ur to heavy and the wheels snap of ? design of the back wheel makes it look a possibility..try get some gears and id give it a buy :P
Mmm, I like the idea of a folding bicycle, but this still isn't a quick and easy enough assembly just yet. They got the wheel parts right, but I don't want to have to fight to put on (or take off) pedals and seat and worry if they'll fall off or not. I want to be able to be able to open the ends, pull out the front and back (like shown) and pop something on the top to release the seat, and fold out the pedals.
Practical depends on your circumstances. If you have no garage or safe place to store a full size bike, if you want to take your bike along when you travel, if you commute by bike but are not allowed to bring a full size bike into the office, guess what - it's practical. Naturally, the above examples apply only to some cyclists but those are the people that the bike is designed for.
Reports are that the Suitcase Bike weighs somewhere at or just above 30 lbs. For the price, that sounds about right and I believe that even lighter versions will be available at an additional cost. Given that the bike has built in casters, moving the bike when folded should be virtually effortless.
I like the look of the bike. To me, the space on the side of the suitcase is a canvas just calling out to be painted with rad custom designs. Then of course, I like outlandishly painted hotrods too.
Montague's full size folding bikes (such as the Hummer) are awesome. My favorites are the Paratrooper and the SwissBike LX; in fact, check out my YouTube video folding and unfolding the SwissBike LX.
By the way, Montague replaced the Hummer line this year with the SwissBike line. Essentially, it's the same bike without the huge HUMMER logo plastered on the side...
The first production model was said to weigh 30 or so lbs. which is cool but I'd like to see them in the 25 lb range. I think the factory's first point of business will be to get some out in the market before offering options such as use of lighter/more expensive materials.
I agree and apparently, so did the designer. He's created a totally differnt suitcase bike that's far lighter. It's made using a magnesium alloy shell but I've received no word as to when it will be in production.
The Suitcase Bike is definitely a specialty bike. First and foremost, it's a folding bike. Bikes that fold exist to make cycling more practical for travelers, apartment dwellers, commuters, etc. Naturally, not all folding bike users want a bike with a built in carry case but there are cyclists that can benefit from this design.
This bike is for cyclists that want to conveniently and quickly conceal/protect their bike on a regular basis. All bike parts fold neatly/quickly into the protective case, keeping the cyclist clean and the bike undamaged. The bike meets airline checked baggage weight/size specs and the suitcase's built in rollers allow the bike to be wheeled thru congested airports, train stations, hotel corridors or narrow office hallways almost effortlessly and without unwanted attention.
Once I have received a prototype and can vouch for the quality, durability and ride quality, I will order a container load and begin offering the suitcase bike at a reduced, presale price (anywhere from USD $329-359 depending on import/shipping costs).
My concern would be that the apparent small wheel size would mean a lot of pedalling to actually travel the kind of distances you would normally use abike for.
Ultimately, it's the gearing that affects pedaling speed, not the wheel size. Though I have not yet received the prototype, I'm expecting a pedaling speed similar to a full size bike.
NOPE TOO complicated and time consuming! sorry if im harsh!
but it needs to be quick easy to assemble and may be a but lighter and smaller!

You mean like when a skateboard or a razr scooter hits a pebble and the thing completely flips? Oh wait, that doesn't happen.

If you have no garage or safe place to store a full size bike, if you want to take your bike along when you travel, if you commute by bike but are not allowed to bring a full size bike into the office, guess what - it's practical. Naturally, the above examples apply only to some cyclists but those are the people that the bike is designed for.

hmmm suitcase design.. i think i would be kinda heavy don't you think -_-
Symph18 4 years ago 2
Reports are that the Suitcase Bike weighs somewhere at or just above 30 lbs. For the price, that sounds about right and I believe that even lighter versions will be available at an additional cost. Given that the bike has built in casters, moving the bike when folded should be virtually effortless.

i dont think it would be heavy

I want one to try. It looks perfect for my husband and my last minute RV trips.

I'm not being critical. It just looks like an 'eyesoar'. I don't think it will be very popular.

I like the look of the bike. To me, the space on the side of the suitcase is a canvas just calling out to be painted with rad custom designs. Then of course, I like outlandishly painted hotrods too.

if i wanted a foldin bike ide get the hummer tactical bike......this thing is very well designed but is kinda ugly

Montague's full size folding bikes (such as the Hummer) are awesome. My favorites are the Paratrooper and the SwissBike LX; in fact, check out my YouTube video folding and unfolding the SwissBike LX.
RideTHISbike 4 years ago
By the way, Montague replaced the Hummer line this year with the SwissBike line. Essentially, it's the same bike without the huge HUMMER logo plastered on the side...

wudn't it b really heavy? x.x

The first production model was said to weigh 30 or so lbs. which is cool but I'd like to see them in the 25 lb range. I think the factory's first point of business will be to get some out in the market before offering options such as use of lighter/more expensive materials.
RideTHISbike 4 years ago
30 pounds ?! that's way to much to carry around for long.
Iran2freedom 3 years ago
I agree and apparently, so did the designer. He's created a totally differnt suitcase bike that's far lighter. It's made using a magnesium alloy shell but I've received no word as to when it will be in production.

is there room for anything else inside the case?

Good question. When the prototype arrives, I'll let you know :)

Does it have any brakes?

Yes. The base Suitcase Bike has a coaster brake & other braking options will be available.

it would be cool exept for the fact that it looks like a beached whale.
DocEv31 4 years ago
You mean a bleached whale - and a tiny one at that :-)
RideTHISbike 4 years ago
well there isn't anything for scale but it LOOKS larger than your average briefcase. And one can't exactly carry two briefcases.
it would look way better in black. ( :

I can't see any sense in this product!

RideTHISbike 4 years ago
some of those sound effects are from counter-strike. lol i dunno how i realized that. looks cool though.

RideTHISbike 4 years ago
do they come out in australia??
connorchelseafc 4 years ago
I'm sure they will be available in Australia.
RideTHISbike 4 years ago
wer can i get 1?!?!?!
connorchelseafc 4 years ago
Once I have received a prototype and can vouch for the quality, durability and ride quality, I will order a container load and begin offering the suitcase bike at a reduced, presale price (anywhere from USD $329-359 depending on import/shipping costs).
RideTHISbike 4 years ago
My concern would be that the apparent small wheel size would mean a lot of pedalling to actually travel the kind of distances you would normally use abike for.
turboyoshi 4 years ago
Ultimately, it's the gearing that affects pedaling speed, not the wheel size. Though I have not yet received the prototype, I'm expecting a pedaling speed similar to a full size bike.
RideTHISbike 4 years ago
Excellent, although is the suitcase really necessary, and does it add to the overall weight of the vehicle?
