@10431567 You have to push it in place. But this went out of style in the 1990s when the lever was created to help prevent pins from being bent or a tool needed to pry the CPU off of the Mobo.
Okay, I'm a total idiot when it comes to figuring out hardware. My processor according to CPU-Z is a AMD Antholon II X2 240. I can't make heads or tails of the rest of the stuff that it's saying. At the bottom is says Cores: 2, so I assume that means dual core? Also, could you help me with what exactly I'm looking for to upgrade?
@piemaster546 You're right, it is a dual core. It also has a speed of 2.8GHz. It's socket type is AM3. That means that your motherboard has an AM3 socket. So any CPUs that are of that type should work unless they require more watts than the motherboard's max. If you can find out what kind of motherboard you have I could help more. I honestly think that what you have is great enough to play any game out there today. The only trouble spots I see are if you are rendering graphics or editing video.
@piemaster546 Okay, your motherboard has a Max TDP of 95Watts. So any AM3 CPU at or below that wattage should work. If you go to NewEgg (dot) com and search for "AMD Athlon II X3 440 Rana" that is the CPU that I'm recommending. But before you go off and buy it, have you tried to run FFXIV with your current setup?
@AISim Not yet. I tried the benchmark and that didn't run smoothly at all. It was jerky and wonky. I do plan on trying it before hand though. Thanks a lot btw.
@struggle375 Google and download the program CPU-Z. This program will tell you what processor you are currently using. It should also tell you what socket it is using. Search for processors matching that socket number on NewEgg dot com.
What is your current processor? It might not even be worth upgrading.
@AISim i have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ 2.80GHz
my GPU is an ATI 5570
im trying to play black ops and its just running terrible 35fps i went to a website called canyourunit and it said the problem was my processor. so im trying to find a cheap good gaming AMD quad core
@struggle375 Unfortunately an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ means that your motherboard is an AM2 Socket type. There aren't a lot of processors out there that are better and under the board's watt restriction. Your best bet would be to get a better graphics card in this case probably. I think ATI 5570 uses the PCI Express slot. When looking for a few video card keep in mind how much power your powersupply has. I would suggest finding out how many watts your current one is.
@AISim lol.... i recently baught the ATI 5570 and it can run games fine (high - ultra) i thought it was my processor but it was actually the game, so i dont need to buy a new 1 thanks for the help
@struggle375 The only other option I can see is buying a new motherboard and processor... Other then that I'm sorry to say that you're out'a luck. If you do go that route, remember that if you have Windows and the computer's hardware changes enough it wont know whats what without a new install.
Nice ! I have a really (really!) old mobo .. Via p4m266 !!! (year 2002) can i install EVERY processor on this mobo or some old ones? (it has 1.8ghz p4 processor, can i remove and install an intel core i7 ? can this happen or there are limits? And how can I learn about these limits? Thanks!!
@ViPERMiMiS As awesome as it would be, you cannot put an i7 cpu in a motherboard that old. Why? Well there are several reason. The first and foremost is that it just physically cannot fit into the socket correctly. The second reason why is because the motherboard BIOS most definitely would not support it. The third and final reason is I'm sure the motherboard has a much lower watt threshold that the i7 needs. Go to Google and search the terms "Computer Forum CPU 101" to learn more.
@ViPERMiMiS the core i7 and pentium 4 has different sockets. i7 has an LGA1366 and P4 a PGA478. What an LGA and PGA is: LGA is what is called Land Grid Array, it has pins on the motherboard socket rather than on cpu. PGA is Pin Grid Array and it has pins on the cpu like shown in the video. And of course they are different CPU's with a different type of architecture.
Well, not really. It depends if they are made of the right rubber that reduces ESD (Electrostatic discharge). Most anti static gloves are made of cloth. For your standard home computer I would recommend that you just touch a bit of metal before touching anything with a circuit.
Not at all. You just need something to take the charge from you. You could use a door knob, a fork, even the side of your computer case (the part you take off.)
i have a 1.6ghz aprocesser right kno and i wanted to buy the same pentium 4 but with 3ghz, i heard that i cant upgrade it anymore without upgrading the mother board and i was woundering if u can give me an answer to that, my pc is the dell dimension 8100
This would be correct. I'm almost positive that you could not use a Pentium 4 in place of your other processor due to it being a different socket type. If you wanted to upgrade the processor you would have to upgrade the motherboard and most likely the RAM as well just to get a new processor to work.
@AISim hey im currently runnin on a s3700y n i wanted to know if i could up-grade the cpu i have, im tryin to produce music and some plug-ins i have like reverb type take up a bunch of cpu so i need something that can hang with it, any suggestions?? thanks
@FiSTFigHT09 From what I can tell by google you have a HP that uses AMD hardware. If that's right then you're most likely using a cpu which used Socket AM2. Bad news, AM2 cpus are no longer being made, the new goods is that AM2+ cpus use the same socket form so they will work. If you're working with intense programs a quadcore would really help. Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition ($160) is the best the current thing you can upgrade to, it's a AM2+ socket type so it should work.
@FiSTFigHT09 On second thought, I'm not entirely sure if the cpu I recommended will work for you. The motherboard has to have a BIOS update to get it working. I'll have to look further into it... If anything else needed to be changed it would be your Power Supply. I'll get back to you soon on if the cpu I recommended will work or not.
@FiSTFigHT09 Okay since I cannot find anything that supports the use of the Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition with your motherboard I suggest to NOT to upgrade your cpu. If you was more power from it the best I can do is to recommend that you overclock your processor. Doing this will void any warranty though.
@silentk1987 Yeah, but I don't think they will become popular for a while as people are just getting used to quadcores. Do a google search for "TILE-Gx"
@AISim heatsink=unit made of heat conductive material (usually copper and aluminum) that is fastened to any computer chip that requires cooling (usually CPU, GPU, NB, SB) to draw and dissipate the heat from the chip. a fan is typically added to help better dissipate the heat. typically has a copper base with heat pipes that draw heat in to rows/layers of conductive fins (aluminum) to dissipate heat. more commonly called a cooler.
It should just drop in place. The only thing you need to push pressure on is the lock arm. And even then you only need to push it enough until you hear the little click noise.
Hey I have a question because I want do upgrade my current computer's processor. Right now its like a 1.4GHz so yeah its pretty crappy. I can buy a 3.0+ for less than 180 dollars. I was wondering though, do certain brands go in certain computers or can any processor fit any computer?
Sounds good. Just for further info on sockets, if you can match the type up, ex LGA 775, then they will fit and work. If they are different then it will not work or fit into your motherboard.
Once you install it, you would put the gel on top of the processor and then attach the heat sink. As for the installation between this and a quad, they would be the same. Hope that helps!
If the processor is seated flush against the socket you should have no problems or have to worry about breaking it. All you have to worry about is getting all the pins in all the holes.
For the same idea that it isn't smart to stick a fork in a toaster. The electricity could kill you just like static could kill the electronic components.
Just once. Take note, touch the unattached side of the pc case. Pretty much touch anything metal once, wear sneakers with a rubber sole, and you'll be good.
Hi, I'm thinking of buying a new motherboard for my computer (Pentium 4 Prescott) Could I use my old CPU into my new motherboard, or do I have to buy new CPU.
FSB (front side bus) transfers data between the processor and the computer's other components such as memory, hard drives, etc.

Well, there are the single cores. If you have one of those for BIG games it should be in the 3.+GHz area. If you have a Duo, think in the range of 2.5+GHz. If you go Quad or i7, a basic 2.3GHz would be fine.
As for RAM, most BIG games need 2GBs+ to run smooth/normally.
Also, having a dedicated a video card helps a TON. Integrated onboard video isn't the best for any BIG games.
If you can, look to see if you can replace your current CPU first before buying a new one. I would hate to see you spend that much and not be able to upgrade.
Ok! From what I've found out, some laptops let you upgrade their cpu while others wont. Also, replacing the processor in a laptop is considered "hard" to do, but can be done. I'd need to know the model of your laptop and your current cpu know if yours is replaceable or not.
From what I can find, you have a Core Duo T5250 P-Socket. I'm not 100% sure if you can replace the processor in a Sony laptop, but if you can, Google "NewEgg T9300". It should be the first link. The T9300 is a Core Duo 2.5GHz. Quite a bigger kick then your 1.5GHz Duo.
thz Alsim for your help. i have learned alot from your videos they are all fantastic. 5 stars for all your videos and hope more people should subscribe you. well at least i did. you are kind of like one of my youtube friend now. anyway thz so much for your time helping me. peeessssssssss out
RAM: Think of this as short term memory for running programs that need a place to quickly put or get information. Some programs need more than others. The less RAM is has to work with, the slower it'll run. If it has too little it might not run at all.
GHz: This is how fast the processor can think to solve things, pretty much. GHz has to do with the Core Clock and FSB, but you really don't need to know much about that unless you plan to overclock your CPU.
i have only one game in mind and tha's counter strike 1.6 and suck's running on celeron D,i have nvidia g force 5200 128mb...I'm not an extreme gammer but,i don't understand why when I'm running a game or installing a software is always at 100& Usuage! please help!what's the problem what i can do?
Turns out I was wrong about the best processor you could buy. The *best* you can buy is the Gallatin P4 Extreme Edition (Google RK80532PG0962M). Don't buy it.
As for a new computer, how much are you willing to spend? If you want something with the i7 it'll run you around $800-900 if you built it yourself.
I'm trying to figure out what kind of processor you have. A P4 comes in many shapes and sizes. Can you right click My Computer, select Properties, select the Hardware tab, click on the Device Manager and then tell me the name of P4 you have? (Like my laptop uses an Intel Duel Core T2400) Sorry if all that is a bit confusing, I can try to explain it better if you need.
Hey man , i got a intel pentium IV computer , 2.4 , 2.4 ghz , i was wondering if i can replace and put the new i7 intel processor , quad core 2.66 ghz on it , thanks for answering
Hm, well, it all depends if you have a PCI Express slot. If you do, then you can use any one of those video cards. Right now I think you're just using your motherboard's onboard video, right (no video card)?
Ok, well the easiest thing you can do is download CPU-Z, click on the tab Mainboard and then tell me the Model (Mine is 0KD882 for example). The manufacturer name would be nice as well.
I did some research and it looks like you can indeed replace a processor in a laptop. The main thing you need to know is if it's the same socket type. It could be a bit tricky, I, myself, have never installed or replaced one in a laptop before.
Amazon has a fairly cheap pair you can buy. You can find it by searching for 'antistatic wrist strap'. Or you could go the free way by just touching some metal to discharge yourself. :)
step 2 : hit with your fist to make sure that processor in place

joemerece 3 years ago
The cheapest one I can find is a $219.99 T8100.
Google "NewEgg T8100" It should be the first one.
If you can, look to see if you can replace your current CPU first before buying a new one. I would hate to see you spend that much and not be able to upgrade.

hi. i have a laptop right now. but i want to get a better processor. do you know if all the processors for laptop are the same or different.
joemerece 3 years ago
Hm, very good question... I'm going to have to search around some to find the answer. I can't even think if a place that sells laptop cpus.
AISim 3 years ago
Ok! From what I've found out, some laptops let you upgrade their cpu while others wont. Also, replacing the processor in a laptop is considered "hard" to do, but can be done. I'd need to know the model of your laptop and your current cpu know if yours is replaceable or not.

my laptop is Sony
model: VGN-NR160E
Processor: 1.50GHz
Ram: 1Gb
system type: 32-bit operating system
joemerece 3 years ago
From what I can find, you have a Core Duo T5250 P-Socket. I'm not 100% sure if you can replace the processor in a Sony laptop, but if you can, Google "NewEgg T9300". It should be the first link. The T9300 is a Core Duo 2.5GHz. Quite a bigger kick then your 1.5GHz Duo.

Hi Max i am back one new question.
what does the Ram and the GHz does to computers plz. reply my qustion like this.
Ram: do so and so
Ghz: do so and so
Thz . its just easier for me to know which does what.
joemerece 3 years ago
RAM: Think of this as short term memory for running programs that need a place to quickly put or get information. Some programs need more than others. The less RAM is has to work with, the slower it'll run. If it has too little it might not run at all.
GHz: This is how fast the processor can think to solve things, pretty much. GHz has to do with the Core Clock and FSB, but you really don't need to know much about that unless you plan to overclock your CPU.

ok .. so i think i'll buy a new computer ,do you have any advice for a good one , like a nice processor or something like a good quality/price
Guitarheroes1992 3 years ago
Turns out I was wrong about the best processor you could buy. The *best* you can buy is the Gallatin P4 Extreme Edition (Google RK80532PG0962M). Don't buy it.
As for a new computer, how much are you willing to spend? If you want something with the i7 it'll run you around $800-900 if you built it yourself.

Guitarheroes1992 3 years ago
well huh ... it says : Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40ghz
I got a Radeon x1650 series AGP
i don't really get number like yours .. life T2400 , i don't see that .
Thanks for answering so fast
Guitarheroes1992 3 years ago
Hm, well alright. I guess you do indeed use a 478 socket then... Is your computer 2 years or older?
Sadly, I've got mostly bad news for you. The best processor you can buy with that socket type is a P4 3.0ghz. I doubt you'd even see a change.
Some good news is that there are fairly good video cards for AGP slots.
The bad news is that those good AGP cards will bottleneck on low speed of the CPU.

okay !
I'm looking for a good processor to put in my computer ( who got the spec that i said on my first comment ).. do you have any advices for me ?
Because i want to play css , and Counter-Strike : Source is more processor based . Thanks for answering ;)
Guitarheroes1992 3 years ago

Guitarheroes1992 3 years ago
Sorry to say it, but the i7 cannot fit into the P4's socket because the i7 uses a new type of socket called LGA 1366. Sorry. :/

hi, I have got a :
Intel Core 2 Duo E4400
speed 2000 MHz (2,0 ghz)
can I built a :
Processor - 1 x Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 / 3.16 GHz ( 1333 MHz ) - LGA775 Socket - L2 6 MB - box
instead of it????
FrietjeM 3 years ago
Yes, you can replace your old E4400 with a E8500 because they both use the LGA775 motherboard socket type (The place where you put the processor).
AISim 3 years ago
thanx man!!! I have got a other question:
I have got a: Graphics Media Accelerator 950
videomemory 224 MB
can I built a:Club 3D HD 4670 - Grafische adapter - Radeon HD 4670 - PCI Express 2.0 x16 - 1 GB GDDR3 - Digitale Visuele Interface (DVI), HDMI
OR
Sapphire RADEON HD 4670 - Grafische adapter - Radeon HD 4670 - PCI Express 2.0 x16 - 1 GB GDDR3 - Digitale Visuele Interface (DV
instead of it????
FrietjeM 3 years ago
Hm, well, it all depends if you have a PCI Express slot. If you do, then you can use any one of those video cards. Right now I think you're just using your motherboard's onboard video, right (no video card)?
AISim 3 years ago
I have got a: Graphics Media Accelerator 950
videomemory 224 MB
I donno if it's on the mother board..
FrietjeM 3 years ago
but how can I know if I got a PCI Express??
FrietjeM 3 years ago
Ok, well the easiest thing you can do is download CPU-Z, click on the tab Mainboard and then tell me the Model (Mine is 0KD882 for example). The manufacturer name would be nice as well.

Does the same apply to laptops? I have myself a dell studio with a 2.0 processor i think. Is there a maximum it can take? Good video aswell, cheers
Duey1991 3 years ago
I did some research and it looks like you can indeed replace a processor in a laptop. The main thing you need to know is if it's the same socket type. It could be a bit tricky, I, myself, have never installed or replaced one in a laptop before.

Where can I buy some antistatic wrist straps or special gloves?
harvythewondergerbil 3 years ago
Amazon has a fairly cheap pair you can buy. You can find it by searching for 'antistatic wrist strap'. Or you could go the free way by just touching some metal to discharge yourself. :)

I thought you had to apply some kinda gel or glue or something?
Bojaxs 3 years ago
You're right. Once you install the CPU you put a pea sized dab of thermal gel/paste on top of it for the heatsink.
AISim 3 years ago
nice one!! Didn't realise how simple it was, cheers buddy this will be useful!

If you all find this so helpful I can make some other "how to"s' if you want. PSU, Cards, Motherboards, RAM, Drives, etc.
AISim 3 years ago
motherboard n PSU would be ok, cuz ram, cards and drivers are easier
