Marvin was not to be a crooner for its boring to his fans. The man had a gift and it was being the soul singer he was meant to be. His gift was there straight from gospel. Diana was not a soul singer but she carried standards well with her voice so she was able to win the Supremes over to that kind of music. Berry Gordy knew what fit his stars the best even though some protested Marvin included.
Oh my gosh, this is it. I used to have this cassette and loved it. I lost the darn cassette, and have been trying to find it ever since. Thank you for putting this up ~
I'm very happy Marvin was so stubborn that he pushed and forced to be a crooner for years, even though he was never successful at that. I feel that's where he's at his best... He gave us several albums of this kind of material. And his version of "People" is marvelous! I purchased the CD for "Hello Broadway" on amazon, very satisfied! In the linear notes on the CD, it said he sang this song on one of the tv shows, man I would love to see/hear that if anyone has it!!!!
That version is so rare. It was a remake of a song done by Barbra Streisand and it was featured in "Funny Girl". The LP "Hello Broadway" was rare, but I saw it on one of the LP jackets, but it was not available on CD. As for that version, the Barbra Streisand's original was way better than Marvin Gaye's version.

Don't you think that this should have been released as a single and could he have been the next Nat King Cole or Frank Sinatra?
