I do agree partly with what you say in that you shouldn't base a decision of a game solely on the way it looks. As you said, graphics don't make the game but it can certainly help in creating atmosphere and immersion.

Wanting good graphics doesn't make you an idiot, its a personal opinion.

Also, the designers DID care about the graphics in the NES/SNES era, they just didn't have the technology available that they do now. At the time they came out they were probably "amazing" graphics too.

To me, as long as I can EASILY tell what it is, it's okay, I don't care.  But if a person looks like a car and it's not supposed to, like a human looks like a car, there's some problems.

Agreed. I think people have gotten too used to makers going for realism in an attempt to draw people into a game. We've reached the point now where games like Crysis come pretty close to achieving real life graphics, and the gaming industry is only 20 years old! We need more new games like this- ones which push artistic boundaries and challenge convention. In short, progress.

Realism is nice in games sometimes, but you really do just need a break from it. I love seeing games like the re-vamp of Fallout and the Elderscrolls series with realistic graphics, but even then, they are SO real that it's annoying.

I couldn't stand Crysis' graphics at all. May as well look out the window instead.
