thanks for the vid pretty straightforward my hat off for you. However I do have a question how do you set it up specifically to store and back up final cut projects only
Dude, Im trying to set up time machine to a 138.1GB flash drive. I follow your instructions but after creating the partition the Time Machine window asking me whether I wanna use this disk to back up never comes up. Plus the partition goes back to its original name "disk2s2" and now it wont come up on my desktop. So I unplug it and plug it back in and says that it needs to be initialized. Im stuck dude, cant figure it out, do you know how to? God bless you.. Migue
@migueford I dont know if anyone has helped you but mine didnt either. So I right click the time machine icon and it gives you options. Pick back up or time machine preferences and you can finish the rest of the video!
@maggiedecker5 Not really! Thanks for your tip dude. However; I was told in a forum that Time Machine wont work with flash drives, no matter how big its capacity.

Eloi--from Wikipedia
In The Time Machine
In the year AD 802,701 humanity has evolved into two separate species: the Eloi and the Morlocks. The Eloi are the spoiled, attractive upper class, living in luxury on the surface of the earth, while the Morlocks live underground, tending machinery and providing food, clothing and infrastructure for the Eloi.
i got the same external hard drive and i want to use it as a time machine hard disk for 2 computers (iMac and Macbook).. i notice there are two firewire ports at the back of the Maxtor onetouch 4plus, can it sync two computers simultaneously when plugged in??
Thanks for the video. I wanted to know how people connect there hard drive to the computer, then turn it on and hold down the option key, select their hard drive, and use their hard drive as a computer.
Nice Job on this video. Now I know where to send some one to find an instructional video, when Mac users are having issue's with Time Machine and I don't have the time to help them myself.
My guess is that if I wanted to upgrade my MacBook's hard disk in the future to one of bigger capacity, then I would have to go ahead and back up system files to restore my Mac from a Time Machine backup correct? I'm pretty sure I know the answer already (which is yes) but I wanted to be sure.
hey, good vid - one question when you partition it, arent you re-earasing what you jsut did (when you earased and set it to mac os extended journel) or does it stay at the new formatted format. Also why do you need to partion it and not just leave it at just reformating it to mac os extended jounel
I have my 500GB WD My Book external hard drive hooked up to my server. My server uses it directly and my 4 other macs use it wirelessly over the network by mounting sparse disk image bundles that are on the time machine drive.
What a bunch of unnecessary work! The hard drive does NOT have to be GUID, mine is set as a master boot record and it works perfectly. you do not need to change the partition scheme to be 1 partition. The only step I would recommend is reformatting the drive as mac os extended journaled and renaming your drive at that time, but it is not needed if you dont want/know how to do that. Just plug it in and answer yes when it asks if you want it to be used for time machine, thats it.
leopard is $150. I bought the retail copy and did not pirate for the reason that Time Machine alone is worth more than $150 if it helps in time of need.......That and it was hard to come by pirated, LOL
Haven;t upgraded to leopard yet but from what i've seen doesn't it ask automatically when you plug in the firewire if you want to use it? Anyway i love the inverse color effect! I love this stuff so much (yes youd never guess from watchin my vids but i'm a huge geek with comps)
I want to build my computer so it can run games to the highest Performance, highest graphics, I dont care about price. I know I need a 768mb graphics card, and at least 2gb of ram. But how about Processor, Dose a Processor have anything to do with the performance of a game? And if so what is the top of the line best Processor for a playing games? Also dose the motherboard have anything to do with performance? Or anything else? And what is an Optical Drive, and hard disc?
The time machine is a novel that was turned into many movies, tv shows, comic books, etc. When chris names his drive eloi, he is refering to the simple humans in that novel. There ya go
I'm a major Mac nut, as well as a recent Linux convert (LOL), but I'm surprised that Time Machine would have so many cautions. I mean I understand why they would, but it just made things (at least for me) a wee bit more complicated. I'm definitely putting this video in my favorites for later use. What's the word on running Leopard on G4 machines? I was told that it would be incredibly sluggish.
My understanding is that it's system restore, but only on a secondary hard drive. System Restore in Windows backs up the files on the same drive, which is nice because that means it can (and is) enabled by default. That also means that it works all the time on mobile computers that can't have an external hard drive connected all the time.
I have to say. I've only need using Leopard for about a week and I've had to use Time Machine twice and I'm SO happy it's there. This is an incredible feature. Worth the $129!
I have the ST9160823AS In my Dell Vostro 1500, It's a Seagate 7200RPM 2.5" HDD @ 160GB with a mazimum transfer rate of 59mb/s. Apple DON'T use special hardware!!

Dang! All this work for Time Machine? Well the video from Apple used a drive with Apple premade settings....
MBR should work fine. As well as the FAT file system. But the things mentioned here should be used just for maximum compatibility!
